Your trusty Boys On Film Phil Marriott and Raj Rudolph (moi) did the BFI London Film Festival again this year and our first review is from one of our favorite directors Richard Linklater.

We simply couldn’t miss this one.

HIT MAN is an American action comedy film co-produced and directed by Linklater and starring Glen Powell, both of whom wrote the screenplay based on the 2001 Texas Monthly magazine article of the same name by Skip Hollandsworth.

When I tell you this “strange-but-kinda-true” film is unexpectedly funny – I mean it. I didn’t have much expectations going into this one, but by the time I left, I was smiling ear-to-ear.

So without further ado, here’s our in-depth review of HIT MAN.

Not sure when HIT MAN comes out, but go see it – streaming or in theatres, it’s a good time – especially if you like a bit of dark comedy.

From IMDB: Gary Johnson is the most sought-after professional killer in New Orleans. To his clients, he is like something out of a movie: the mysterious gun for hire. But if you pay him to rub out a cheating spouse or an abusive boss, you’d better watch your back he works for the cops. When he breaks protocol to help a desperate woman trying to flee an abusive husband, he finds himself becoming one of his false personas, falling for the woman and flirting with turning into a criminal himself.

Brandon Cronenberg has certainly taken a page from his famous father’s playbook with Possessor. If you like the likes of Gattaca, eXistenZ and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Possessor will wet your appetite in it’s chilling and stark tale.

Possessor follows an agent, played by both Andrea Riseborough and Christopher Abbott who works for a secretive organization (led by Jennifer Jason Leigh) that uses brain-implant technology to inhabit other people’s bodies – ultimately driving them to commit assassinations for high-paying clients.

Possessor has already made the rounds in the US, but expect it to drop on a streaming service near you sometime soon. We hear there is even an uncut version of the film – I’ll be wanting to watch that!

The 64th BFI London Film Festival was the first ever edition of the event to be widely accessible across the UK, with over 50 virtual premieres, free online events and cinema screenings.

You got to give it up to Frances McDormand – she never plays a bad role. And with Nomadland under her belt, expect another Oscar nod for this powerhouse actor.

Directed by Chloé Zhao, Nomadland takes us on an unforgettable journey through the harsh and heartwarming realities of nomadic American workers. The story is about lead character Fern who, after losing everything, embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad doing odd jobs as an Amazon seasonal worker, park ground host, kitchen help and agricultural worker.

Nomadland hits theatres in January 2021 (fingers crossed).

Nomandland is easily be one of my favorite movies of the year.

Don’t miss it.

Boys On Film Review: The Other Lamb https://eqmusicblog.com/the-other-lamb/ Tue, 13 Oct 2020 09:46:59 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=29088 Rising director Malgorzata Szumowska has created a fascinating look inside a cult that will hook viewers upon watching.

Fascinated with cults? Yeah, us too. Make sure to watch The Other Lamb as it looks deep inside the dark side of religion.

The Other Lamb tells the story of Selah, a girl born into an all-female cult led by a somewhat Christlike figure, known as “The Shepherd”. With growing intensity with slight horror elements, Selah begins to question the morality of her strange and unusual upbringing.

Rising director Malgorzata Szumowska has created a fascinating look inside a cult that will hook viewers upon watching. Although the story somewhat lacks in the middle and could have used a bit more fleshing out, the visuals in The Other Lamb are absolutely gorgeous and the main actor Raffey Cassidy proves that she too is one to watch…

Look out for Szumowska’s latest film as well, Never Gonna Snow Again which is part of the BFI London Film Festival programming.

Look out for The Other Lamb to hit PVOD soon in the UK.

Kajillionaire has to be one of the most original movies of the year. Deservedly, this film is getting a ton of hype and I’d have to say it’s worth all the amazing 50 cent words you can give it.

Old Dolio’s (Evan Rachel Wood) life is turned upside down when her scamming-off-the-top parents invite the talkative outsider Melanie (played by Gina Rodriguez) to join them on a mad heist they’re planning with the airline baggage claim department. It’s as silly as it sounds – but Kajillionaire is probably my favorite film of the year so far.

Kajillionaire is in theatres now so if you can go see it – do. And it’s worth adding to your digital film collection once it drops on VOD.

Bravo BFI for this brilliant programming this year. With movies like Kajillionaire, the festival never seems to disappoint.

The 64th BFI London Film Festival will be the first ever edition to be widely accessible wherever you are in the UK, with over 50 virtual premieres, free online events and cinema screenings across the land.

Stray tells the true story of government protected stray dogs in Istanbul, Turkey. Spend a few days in the life of a dog and follow them around the city as they navigate speeding cars, looking for their next meal and being loved and annoyed by the locals.

As dog lovers ourselves, this was a must-see film for Raj and Phil. In our Boys On Film review, learn all about this great documentary and our viewpoints on it from a couple of loving dog owners.

If you missed Stray at the London Film Festival, fret not – it’s been picked up for distribution after it makes the rounds on the film festival circuit. Put it on your list and make sure to look out for this wonderful documentary.

What a phenomenal first week of the BFI London Film Festival.

To start off the week, your Boys On Film (aka Raj and Phil) highly recommend Mogul Mowgli.

As part of the Dare strand of the festival, Mogul Mowgli tells the story of a rising British rap artist, played by Riz Ahmed, who suddenly falls ill – forcing the character to deal with family, love and career issues which bear the weight of a brick house.

If you liked Patti Cake$, although a tad bit darker, we recommend catching Mogul Mowgli while you can – it’s a hot ticket not to miss out on.

It’s that time of year again, where Phil and Raj dive right into all the best new films and cinematic experiences that are coming soon to a screen near you.

Yes, ladies and gents, it’s once again time for the BFI London Film Festival.

The 64th BFI London Film Festival will be the first ever edition to be widely accessible wherever you are in the UK, with over 50 virtual premieres, free online events and cinema screenings across the land.

Not an easy endeavour to pull off, The BFI London Film Festival has almost completely pivoted online. In a lot of ways, this is a very good move as it widens it’s outreach during the pandemic across the UK and is even hosting screenings of key films all across our fair land – socially distanced of course.

If you’ve been missing new films as much as I have, you surely won’t be disappointed as the BFI LFF programme boasts an impressive number of films this year as compared to most other major film festivals which have paired down their programming dramatically.

In the age of coronavirus, you are probably couped up at home like us with nothing but a fridge full of food and Netflix.

Feeling chilled? Stressed out to the max even more? Well we’ve got a suggestion for you.

So you already bin-watched Tiger King like the rest of the world and feeling like there is nothing left of interest to watch on the streaming sites? Well good news, hot-doc Circus Of Books has dropped on Netflix and it’s a must watch.

I got to see Circus Of Books at the European premiere at the BFI London Film Festival and it was quite easily the best documentary I saw last year on the festival circuit.

Circus of Books tells the unconventional story of a heteronormal family who just happened to run the most legendary gay porn bookstore in LA.

How did they get there? Well, that’s quite a story.

Told through eyes of Hustler Magazine guru Larry Flint, Gay porn icon Jeff Stryker, RuPaul’s Drag Race Queen Alaska Thunderfuck and the store’s employees, friends and family, Circus Of Books is more stranger than fiction – yet charming and quirky and full of light, love and and the endless pursuit of our constitutional rights.

What did Raj think about Circus Of Books – watch our latest Boys On Film episode to find out…

BFI London Film Festival Review: Honey Boy https://eqmusicblog.com/honey-boy/ Tue, 12 Nov 2019 11:04:11 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=27174 The life story of Shia LaBeouf as told through his eyes dazzles us with it's honest and heartfelt narrative. A must-see film this Oscar season.

The post BFI London Film Festival Review: Honey Boy appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

Premise: This is the somewhat autobiographical story of Shia LaBeouf as told through the lens of director Alma Har’el starring Lucas Hedges, Noah Jupe and Shia himself.

Why I liked it: Seriously, can Shia LaBeouf do no wrong as an actor these days? With runaway indie hit The Peanut Butter Falcon doing so well, Shia is on-a-roll with his slate of films this year.

With a touching and quirky storyline about the trials and tribulations of being a child actor, Honey Boy offers us a rare look into the life moments that define us. The chemistry of this delicate story is absolutely spot-on with Shia LaBeouf and director Alma Har’el as the storytelling expertly unfolds into an intriguing narrative that leaves you wishing more film was of this caliber.

The casting of Lucas Hedges as young-adult Shia, and Noah Jupe as boy actor Shia couldn’t have been any more perfect either. With a superior cast and a true belief in the source material, all involved in this modern-day masterpiece should feel very proud of the work done here. You’ll be hard-pressed not to enjoy this wonderful piece of film.

UK and US release date: Out now in the US and released theatrically in the UK on December 6th.

One of the best films of the year – Honey Boy is Oscarworthy
