After counting down to the release of his debut EP “Wavestate,” via focus singles “What if I Feel Like This my Whole Life?” and “Roads.” The emerging singer-songwriter/producer, HULLAH, has unleashed his debut body of work. This project began during the long, dreary days of the COVID-19 pandemic. A time that prompted many to reflect on their lives. Forced to step back from their usual daily routines, people often found themselves nostalgic. Moreover, reminiscing about childhood experiences and pivotal moments. For HULLAH, the pandemic experience was no different, intensified even. As it inspired him to embark on the creation of the “Wavestate” EP.
The EP title reflects both the fluidity of state of mind and my creative process during the post-lockdown period, which I’ve described as “a collection of .WAV files representing fleeting feelings.” Hullah explains.
Exploring the tracks, particularly “What if I Feel Like This My Whole Life?“, reveals Hullah’s poignant experience of living with a disability. In contrast, “Roads” captures the overwhelming emotions and reflections that arise after a night out clubbing. (A pursuit Hullah embraces as a vital source of comfort and release in the face of a debilitating condition). The “Wavestate” EP features a compelling third original track, “Long Nights,” which dives deeper into the relentless struggle of coping with daily physical pain. This track powerfully conveys the profound loneliness experienced while grappling with such a condition. Depicting the resolve one musters to endure another agonizing night. The city’s nightlife quiets to a soft murmur, intensifying the solitude of someone enduring their own painful reality.
Complementing the three original tracks are three spoken-word soundscapes, which serve as dreamy, evocative linking passages that weave seamlessly between the tracks. These soundscapes are designed to create immersive, mood-like atmospheres, drawing listeners into a reflective space that captures the complexities of struggle and personal experience. Through this intricate interplay of music and spoken word, the EP offers a profound exploration of resilience and emotion. Yet amid the difficulty, positive references emerge, culminating in the EP’s parting words shared, “it’s still a beautiful world, be careful“.
While many songwriters rely solely on emotional experiences. Hullah stands out by drawing inspiration from both emotional depth and physical sensations. This bold approach is nothing short of remarkable. With this EP, Hullah not only meets expectations but shatters them in ways we didn’t foresee. The result is a captivating blend of dreamy, bittersweet, and irresistibly catchy sonic dance-pop music. I have to say, I was entranced by the “Wavestate” magic from the very first listen. Once these melodies take hold, you’ll find it nearly impossible to shake them off.
