I am absolutely thrilled about this week’s standout release: “Je Ne Sais Quoi,” the debut track from London’s very own self-proclaimed “Pop Girlie Boy,” Stan Pratt. Now, I can already hear the questions: Doesn’t Kylie have a track with the same name? Is this a reimagining? The answer is a resounding no. Kylie recorded “Je ne sais pas pourquoi” for her iconic 1988 debut album “Kylie,” but these two tracks couldn’t be more different in sound and style. Kylie embodies that classic disco and dance-pop flair we all love, while Stan Pratt is here to push boundaries with his bold, maximalist pop infused with an alternative edge.

Interestingly, I see a parallel between Stan and the current alt-pop sensation Chloe Qisha, who holds a degree in psychology. Stan brings a unique twist of his own, boasting a degree in neuroscience. (Surprised? I certainly was!). This combination of academic prowess and musical talent is sure to create something truly unique.

Describing the debut offering “Je Ne Sais Quoi,” the song is playful and upbeat albeit notably brimming with a vibrant, cool and thought-provoking narrative, teeming with tongue-in-cheek lyricism.

“I wrote it about a certain category of male narcissist, and at the start of the song, I allude to the way he’s been shaped by his upbringing.” Though the track’s protagonist was “treasured like an angel from the skies”, he’s now “dancing with the devil just to bring you down a level” – in other words, precisely the kind of bad boy who’s tough to resist,” Stan explains.

Stan’s deep love for 80s synth-pop infuses his music with a nostalgic yet fresh vibe that truly resonates with me. While I’m not aware of him covering any of Kylie’s tracks. I can confidently say that his rendition of Bronski Beat’s “Smalltown Boy” is a must-listen (check it out here). It’s a brilliant interpretation that showcases his unique style!

When exploring new music and emerging artists, I always trust my instincts. In this case, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of excitement about Stan Pratt. I genuinely believe I’m in for the long haul with his sound. If you’re a fan of Charli XCX, MARINA, Alfie Templeman, or Conan Gray, then I have no doubt you’ll find yourself equally captivated by Stan Pratt.

And what a beautiful daydream this is!

To tell the truth, I wouldn’t be lying if I said “Lights Camera Action,” is my personal favourite of these all new “Tension II” Kylie tracks.

As soon as I dived in on my first listen to the track. It was instantly apparent, why Initial Talk specifically went to straight to Bright Light Bright Light as the chosen collaborator. The track’s musical soundscape is so Ace of Base coded. Moreover, as a huge fan of the globally acclaimed Swedish pop group. Bright Light Bright Light was easily the obvious candidate as a featured artist.

I feel sure Rod didn’t need much convincing when being tasked to dream up either suitable lyrics when tasked to jump on “Bye Bye” as vocalist. Following the recent release of his iTunes-topping, Official UK Charts #8 placed album “Enjoy Youth.” It is fitting that Rod ventures into yet another, 90s-influenced, pop direction. This time taking on Euro-dance Rod continues with his use of uplifting lyricism evident in his album “Enjoy Youth,” the joyous feel-good allure spills over into “Bye Bye.” A track which details basking in the love light of someone special that their presence ushers previous sadness, dark clouds and negative thoughts away.

Just when I think Rod has dropped a tonne load of music, there comes along this Initial collaboration, that feels perfectly timed and so on brand with Bright Light Bright Light’s own current release cycle. What a musical landmark 2024 he is having and it wouldn’t surprise me if this trend continued throughout 2025 as well.
