Are we finally emerging from Groundhog season? Like me, do you feel as though each and every day of 2021 thus far has had the feeling as though a mysterious force keeps hitting the repeat button? UK Lockdown #3 has been a real stinger, hasn’t it? So you, therefore, might need a reminder of what new music went down in January and February?… We thought as much! So we’ve pulled our finger out and compiled the new March 2021 edition of our Spotify playlist “This Beat Is Poptronik.” Want to know more?… we’re only too happy to oblige…

MARCH 2021

Who is featured?

This week the 78th Golden Globe Awards took place. The awards recognizing excellence in film, both American and international, and American television. We couldn’t help but notice Sia had been nominated for the Best motion picture – musical or comedy award for her movie “Music” when we were thumbing through the noms. (We cover (Raj covers) film reviews as well. If you hadn’t noticed.) What can we say, other than Sia was robbed by “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.” So we’ve taken it upon ourselves to crown Sia queen of the March 2021 “This Beat Is Poptronik” playlist. Bagging the top spot with “Together” a song brimming with positivity and hope.

With a melody as slinky smooth as buttercream and just as sweet. Newcomer Jack Newsome has two playlist placements. Start with his latest jam “Arms.” “The Year The World Stood Still” will help you get another feel of his artistry. A potent singer-songwriter force, we have a very good feeling about.

We have never heard the Billy Idol track “Eyes Without a Face” sound so chill, but we are in rapture with the new Poolside remix. The blissed-out production is totally a new flavour to behold.

Long live Baby Queen! I’m pretty sure “Raw Thoughts” is my most streamed track of 2021, already. No coincidence then, Bella Latham has made the playlist twice. With her lyrics, she, is so, brilliant and being hugely relevant at the same time. Surely, “These Drugs” is as deep as it gets. It is so raw.

Sound On. “Bad Tattoo” from HYYTS is dreamy delicious, electro-pop teamed with, an intelligent social commentary that takes you on a journey.

Don’t miss gems from Allie X, Sam Feldt and Kesha, Nick Jonas, London Grammar, Greyson Chance and Conan Gray

Who you should have on your radar:

Sweden’s flyckt shares innovative track “Love Is Overrated.” Arresting soundscapes, palette cleansing and very addictive.

The pop is strong on “Champagne Butterflies” from Ireland’s Wild Youth. Irridescent, addictive indie-pop met with synth grooves.

Drink up the summer vibes. Alfie Templeman makes us aware he’s the hottest new indie-pop talent to watch with brilliantly good “Everybody’s Gonna Love Somebody.”

DISCOVER rising electro-pop innovator Leif Coffield who will revitalise your senses with mesmerising, boundary-pushing track “Say My Name.”

A gem. Drew Sycamore – “45 Fahrenheit Girl” a little, reminiscent of Miley Cyrus. Deserves to be a Europop smash. Pop with an electronic heartbeat.

Digitized, glitchy sound. Hyper-pop stylings, similar to Charli XCX, A.G. Cook & SOPHIE. If “Soda Pop” indicates how Apollo Monroe does, exciting & edgy. We hope there’s more similarly buzzy, forward-thinking music ready to launch.

Please DO go and explore the March 2021 playlist and discover a new favourite track and/or artist for yourself. (While you’re sitting on a bench with a friend having a takeaway coffee.) Stayed tuned. Check back for more “This Beat Is Poptronik” news and an updated playlist sometime soon.

A lot has happened since the last “This Beat Is Poptronik” update in March. As much as I hate to keep mentioning it. The wrath of COVID-19 and adjusting to life in lockdown, self-isolation or quarantine and observing social distancing when we venture out, has become a strange new norm. In light of everything which has been happening, we hope that our readers are staying healthy, safe, & sane! Despite the obvious adversities, it has been particularly heartening to see communities come together to support one another. The music industry especially, being an early adopter of finding new and innovative ways of keeping us all uplifted at this time. Livestream gigs and benefits have really, taken off. There are so many now that it is hard to keep up! The humble, playlist has become an even more important companion in these times.

Subscribing to the “This Beat Is Poptronik,” playlists means there is no excuse not to enjoy and support electronic, pop, and indie music, be it from established or newly, emerging artists. To make things even simpler, we have started up “This Beat Is Poptronik” 2020 Archive Playlist this month as well, which we will keep adding to (find it HERE)

The May edition of the playlist is now out, ready and waiting for you to download or stream, (whatever you prefer really) and pop into your ears.

Who is featured?…

Who could have predicted the opening spot would go to the Call Me Loop track “Downhill From Here“, huh? We couldn’t resist having little a joke. Nonetheless, the track is a pop-belter. Enjoy it much.

Blog favourites, Bright Light Bright Light, Sazzie, Tom Aspaul, SIRPAUL, REYNA, Alex Di Leo and Hannah Jane Lewis continued to show us what they do best.

Aluna (now solo) of AlunaGeorge stepped back into the pop arena. While Pet Shop Boys, Troye Sivan, Dua Lipa, Lennon Stella, Ava Max, HAIM and 5SOS threw more of their electrifying tracks into the ring.

Who you should have on your radar:

First up, from a voice that resonates with special magic. GRACEY who is currently enjoying her first official top 40 chart placing as the featured artist on the Kid 220 track “Don’t Need Love” – has changed the name of her lovely sad pop banger “Gone” to “Alone In My Room.” To reflect self-isolation and because Twitter told her too. She’s ace BTW.

From TikTok sensation to future-forward artist. Trevor Daniel embraces emotive pop sensibility head-on, on FINNEAS co-write and produced “Past Life.”

We are given a glimpse of Evie Irie’s spitfire personality on “Over Him” and definitely, have the appetite for more sassy pop songs from her.

We’ll be paying close attention to rising electronic producer pluko from now on because his track “used to” with Cassette Tapes is incredible electronic pop music.

Please DO go and explore the playlist and discover a new favourite track and/or artist for yourself.

We’ll update you again on “This Beat Is Poptronik” news next month.

Now that’s what I call electronic pop!

Only the best new pop, electronic and indie music makes it onto our This Beat Is Poptronik Spotify playlists.

Curated by Mandy Rogers and Raj Rudolph from EQ MusicThis Beat Is Poptronik is your must-listen-to playlist to download on-the-go.

Turn it up and tune everything else out.

What an exceptional month, February 2020, turned out to be for new music. It well and truly lived up to its promise and brought an avalanche of new pop tracks tumbling into our lives. Most of the time it felt as though the shortest month of the year was zooming by at fast-pace, just because of having one/two days less, there was just so much to cram in. And now, we get to take a look back at the crazy month in music, that was February 2020, because the latest edition of our “This Beat Is Poptronik” – March 2020 playlist is now out, ready and waiting for you to download or stream, (whatever you prefer really) and pop into your ears.

Subscribing to the “This Beat Is Poptronik,” playlists means there really is no excuse not to enjoy and support electronic, pop, and indie music, be it from established or newly, emerging artists.

Who is featured?…

She was cutting it fine right up until the last minute but in the end, Lady Gaga comeback track “Stupid Love” showed everyone else how pop needs to be done and as you would expect, the queen of pop grabs the top spot.

Equally, between them, Dua Lipa (“Physical”), Harry Styles (“Falling”) Greyson Chance (“Dancing Next To Me”) and Dagny (“Come Over”) released the best new music videos, for their A1 pop songs.

It’s the 20th Anniversary year of the Sugababes, and we know they are busy recording music. But we had a sweet surprise of a release from Mutya Buena with Electric Pineapple on the track “Black Valentine.” You would be crazy, mad to let the song fly under your radar.

Betty Who doesn’t just get one feature, but turns up on the playlist TWICE.

Newcomers to note:

Dallas-based synthwave duo, PRIZM really piqued our interest with their 80s styled nu-retro vibes.

It’s fair to say we’ve become a touch obsessed with Raissa. We feel her eclectic stylings are a little bit similar to that of early MARINA.

It is the second time in 2 months that we have featured KOOLKID. He has songwriting credits for BTS, the latest for “Inner Child” from “Map of The Soul: 7

Please DO go and explore the playlist and discover a new favourite track and/or artist for yourself.

We’ll update you again on “This Beat Is Poptronik” news next month.

It’s 2020! Not only has the New Year begun but a new decade as well. If you’re anything like me, it takes at least a week to get back into my stride once the festive holidays are over.

2019, what a year that was. Making the headlines, were the turbulent political landscape, Extinction Rebellion protests and the impacts of climate change and global warming. All being topics in the news we would wake-up to most mornings. On a happier note. There was music, and quite a lot of it, focusing on lending a voice or opinion on current social topics. But, music also brought us some splendid electronic pop tracks. That we felt we should put together a Spotify playlist of the EQ approved, best songs for 2019.

Over 80 tracks made it onto the “This Beat Is Poptronik – January 2020” playlist on Spotify. Totalling nearly, five hours worth of non-stop listening to the best electronic, pop and indie songs of 2019. These tracks will brighten up your day. Whether it’s your commute into work, cleaning the house from top-to-bottom or just taking a few minutes out for yourselves to enjoy a cup of coffee and a break from the daily grind.

  1. Like Like – Lost Child
  2. Shut Up – Greyson Chance

Come on over here cherry, cherries! I’ve been chomping at the bit to sink my teeth into my new found favourite Dragonette track “Darth Vader”.

For as long as we can remember Dragonette have been perched upon our radar. And if you were thinking that we weren’t ever going to mention the fact that they’ve a new album out, by way of “Royal Blues”, then think again. We were saving up to drop the full whammy of news on you that we’ve commandeered them to headline our next EQ Music Live show in February!

The excitement is building up real here at EQ Music, because we know that to hear a selection of the “Royal Blues” tracks at first hand, in an intimate live setting, such as our EQ Music Live shows are, will enable us to be suitably fixin’ to thrill more than ever before, where a Dragonette album is concerned.

There are so many of Dragonette’s maelstrom of hits that we hope they might pull out of the bag to surprise us with. Call out to “Live In This City”, “Pick Up The Phone”, “Fixin’ To Thrill”, “I Get Around”, you get the picture, my personal wish-list is endless!

Of the new “Royal Blues” album. The spacey, disco delight that is “Darth Vader” is a total hot pick and you can get more familiar with it by jumping on the audio stream conveniently placed here or better still have it with you when you’re on the go. As we’ve included it on our February 2017 edition of the This Beat Is Poptronik” playlist on Spotify.

Not only this. There are a WHOPPING 64 other tracks on the February Edition too, not all by Dragonette of course, I hasten to add. Cracking tunes aplenty though.

Electronic Pop is alive and well and sounding holy moly, amazeballs in 2017!

Let’s be honest here. May was just not the greatest month in music. With the loss of a legend and the resurgence of that annoying “It’s gonna be May” *Nsync meme, it’s time to start a new. If it’s true that April showers bring May flowers

Let the latest edition of This Beat is Poptronik be the miracle grow to a great month in pop!

May’s Poptronik playlist brings a hot dose of what you need to get start off the month right featuring:

‘Go’ by M83 ft. Mai Lan- Serena caught M83 in concert last month and couldn’t wait to share her experience as an instant converted fan. ‘Go!’ is their latest single off their April album release Junk.

‘Kamikaze’ by Young Brother- the single ‘Kamikaze’ has been out for about a year now. Though, proving great things come to those who wait; in a years’ time, Young Brother teamed up with Ultra and unleashed a 80s infused 8-bit adventure for his debut video for the aforementioned single.

‘Sail Away’ by Man Made Time- Nothing makes the staff at EQ more excited than when an out-of-the-box thinking new act becomes known to us. This past month, Man Made Time awoke our senses with a future sound served of their forward thinking creative direction. A sonic template cut heavy from the percussion section set aside placement of esoteric electronic undertones that provided a fitting sonic dance floor for otherworldly gilded vocals.

‘Give It Up’ by Nathan Sykes ft. G-Easy- The all grown up boy bander has delivered something incredibly sultry. Nathan’s latest single showcases his soul stylized vocals to their fullest, and yes… you do hear a sample of the 90’s hit ‘Don’t Leave Me’ by Blackstreet.  I guess April marked the month that could go down in history is one where the boy banders show that they are true men! With the release of Nathan’s latest video you get a look at everything you ever wanted to see from him and more… Just wait for those fan fics.

‘I Thought The Future Would Be Cooler’ by YACHT – this LA based band opened up for M83. ‘I Thought The Future Would Be Cooler’ takes a stylized look at what the 21st century has become with the addition of synths and truly 80’s inspired vocals. YACHT proves that it’s okay to come to a show early, you don’t know what kind of treasures you may find.

March 2016 was quite the month for pop music. As the temperature began to rise, so did the hot new pop beats caressing our ear drums.  It’s a new month, and that can only mean one thing…

A brand spanking new “This Beat Is Poptronik” playlist for April 2016!

From the past 31 days, we’ve compiled the 25 best tracks that have graced the pages of EQ Music for your own listening pleasure.

This month’s Poptronik beats include:

“You Are The Only One” by Sergey Lazarev – Thunder and lightning, the face of euro pop has gotten exciting! With an upbeat, positive, love song matched with innovative and striking visuals in the accompanying video; When Sergey takes the Stockholm stage with the pop banger ‘You Are The Only One’ this May, the world will finally see what we’ve been talking about all these years.

“Until The End” by New Arcades – We can always look to New Arcades for the consummate dose of synth-pop. After firing great electronic nuggets out for a substantial amount of time, this past month the duo released their latest single ‘Until The End.’ In mixing up the old and the new, New Arcades arrive with the power of busting synth-pop, glistening in nostalgia too.

“One Strike” By All Saints – There hasn’t been quite the girl band presence in the charts since the late 90’s has there? As of late Little Mix and Fifth Harmony have been quite comfortable at the top… until now. It’s true All Saints are officially back! This past month brought the first single off their new album “Red Flag” entitled ‘One Strike.’ Too look at and hear them, you wouldn’t think of them as 20 years older. The girls are still able to harmonize as well as they did then, then with a modern 2016 edge!

“Coda” By Kill J – Through ethereal meets synth pop sounds, Kill J takes the listener on a journey of full blown empowerment. For the non-musically educated, the term coda is the ending passage of a piece of music. ‘Coda’ takes the listener on a full blown tempo roller coaster whilst delivering a powerful message of standing up for yourself by taking the last word in the end.

Raj had a chance to check out Kill J live at SXSW, check it out here.

“Close” by Nick Jonas ft. Tove Lo – He’s not a boy anymore! By taking inspiration from the moody vocal stylings of his featured counterpart Tove Lo, Nick Jonas tells the true story of the magic and madness of love. By using the analogy of fear, ‘Close’ describes the separation of two lovers when the other is too afraid of commitment. Taking the literal expression of that fear, the video also turns up the heat. No worries it’s a video safe for work! They’re just showing the world the forces of love that not even a rocket scientist can explain.

Happy Days by Brooke Candy: A true pop chameleon has expanded her musical repertoire by venturing into our electronic pop world. The dark pop is quite the change to her hip-hop releases in the past. Brooke Candy proves with this release that she is able to cross genres and experiment. A true asset when it comes to delivering pop music.

‘Jealousy’ by Robert DeLong : The one man electro band has delivered an electro infused middle finger to the jealous lover in this upbeat track. The upbeat melody delivers a feeling of strength not having to put up with someone’s lies.
