With his latest release, I think Rhian! has the right idea. It is not uncommon for music artists to pay homage to their musical influences and inspirations. For Rhian!, a huge influence on his sound and style pivots right back to the queer disco trailblazer Sylvester, most notably renowned for his timeless 1978 hit “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real).” Similarly, Rhian! covers this iconic disco anthem in most of his live sets. Therefore, he might easily have chosen to record the track with his own hot take. Since the end of the week is almost here, I feel like we are in need of a suitably infectious bop to take us into this summertime-fuelled weekend. In fact, I need look no further than London-based pop artist Rhian! whom I have come to know as an artist exuding musical versatility and diversity. For his latest release “Vitamin D,” Rhian! is reaching into his fun-fectious side once more, when teaming up with influential performer, the trans woman Brandy X.

It’s been a few tracks since Rhian! allowed his fun side to peek through in his music and I feel Rhian! is very much making up for this fact on “Vitamin D“. A song which is unabashedly playful and with more than exhibiting, a hint of camp attitude. Thus creating a refreshing and lively listening experience.

“The lyrics are left open to interpretation. I’m not going say, what it’s about. It could be about the sun’s nutrients or not. I was feeling very playful and cheeky when I wrote it.”

This is because they are always of the highest quality, with incredible performances and production value that rival that of major artists. Oh! Thank goodness it’s Friday—now I can share the track that’s occupied my headspace all week. I lost count of how many times this song has popped into my head. Whatever I did, be it household tasks, watching TV, on a walk or blogging, the earworm was mischievously always there, even in my quiet moments. The track in question, “NO!” by Rhian!, has struck such a chord that I think it has earwormed its way and taken up the position as my new theme song. When you listen to “NO!” you will understand precisely why I found the infectiousness hard to escape.

An alert about “NO!“. It should come with a warning attached as the track somewhat emits a playful vibe and is effortless that listeners will be drawn into it. However, there is more to “NO!” than exhibiting an insane ear-popping melody alone. The song does have some astute words of wisdom to offer about the power of no. It’s a song about self-preservation and empowering ourselves by saying no to things and situations that make us uncomfortable or don’t align with our beliefs.
