Last year at the Paris Olympics, the innovative French artist Christine and the Queens teamed up with Cerrone, the godfather of French disco. Their collaboration brought a reimagined performance of Cerrone’s classic track “Supernature” to life in front of the iconic Arc de Triomphe. This partnership has proven to be more than just a one-time event. Namely, since these talented artists plan to capitalize on their musical chemistry by releasing an upcoming 4-track EP filled with fresh material. The excitement builds with the recent release of the first teaser, “Catching Feelings“. And where the track features a sparkling French touch disco vibe.

Before you press play on this new release, it’s important to recognize that fans of Christine and the Queens already know. Thus being the artist’s distinctive approach to music. Moreover, one that intricately weaves together thought-provoking lyrical narratives. Their work frequently engages with themes of social commentary, as well as deep explorations of emotional landscapes and complex aspects of identity. With this perspective in mind, it becomes immediately clear the essence of this creative formula is alive and well in “Catching Feelings.”

This track serves as a vibrant commentary centred around being open to love. And encourages listeners to embrace uninhibited feelings and transcend societal conventions. The lyrics, rich with meaning, invite introspection and connection: “Free your mind, open up. I could be the one you love. Take a chance, understand, I could be, be your man.” These lines encapsulate the essence of vulnerability and the courage it takes to explore intimate relationships. Furthermore making it a compelling listen for anyone seeking depth and resonance in their music.

The music video directed by Christine and the Queens powerfully illustrates the concept of self-expression in multiple forms. The clip intricately combines close-up shots of the artist passionately laying down the vocals of the track. Interlaced with dynamic scenes of Christine dancing. Each movement conveys a sense of freedom and authenticity, while the vibrant and eclectic wardrobe further enhances this narrative. The post Watch “Cute Threat” by Raissa appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

I have been captivated by the multilingual singer-songwriter and producer Raissa ever since her groundbreaking 2020 singles “Bullying Boys” and “Angel Energy” took the internet by storm. Raissa’s musical journey is nothing short of fascinating, marked by unexpected twists and valuable collaborations. Initially starting as an independent artist, she successfully collaborated with renowned pop figures like Mark Ronson and Mura Masa to elevate her sound. Just recently, Raissa joined the impressive roster of Neon Gold Records, where she has debuted the infectious track “No Genius,” featuring her talented friend and collaborator Rahim Redcar, also known as Christine and the Queens. Just as the excitement around this dynamic new release is building, Raissa quickly followed up with “Cute Threat,” her debut EP with Neon Gold Records. Notably showcasing her undeniable talent and creativity.

About the EP, she says: Cute Threat” is about contrast and contradiction. It’s about being deceptively capable and powerful in spite of how you may be packaged. It’s relishing the fact people don’t see you coming and finding freedom in that. It’s a playful and braggadocious celebration of self”.

Listen on Apple Music

Furthermore, the captivating title track comes to life with a vibrant, storyboard-style video directed by Daniel Holliday. This visual experience marks a striking departure from the charming DIY animation that defined Raissa’s 2020 debut era. With this new portrayal through a real-world lens, she creates an authentic connection with her viewers. No longer the enigmatic figure she once was, Raissa is embracing her artistry confidently. Moreover, inviting us to see a more personal side of her journey.

In “Cute Treat,” Raissa brings a refreshing dose of cheeky swagger that captivates listeners. She showcases a playful side previously unseen. The quirky beats of the track enhance this newfound confidence, radiating with irresistible charm. This empowering anthem serves as a powerful reminder that while support from others is valuable, the most authentic love must come from within. Raissa’s transformation in this song is not just impressive; it’s relatable and inspiring.

The arrival of this release has reignited my fascination with Raissa. Now officially signed with Neon Gold Records, she’s poised to deliver more captivating music in 2025. I recognized her undeniable pop potential from the start. I truly believe that with Neon Gold backing her, she will shine even brighter in the future. Raissa has that unique spark.

The emerging singer-songwriter/producer, HULLAH is gearing up for the release of his debut EP “Wavestate,” arriving soon. The first taste of the upcoming body of work recently came by way of the track “What If I Feel Like This My Whole Life?.” And furthermore, demonstrates his soothing pop capabilities under an umbrella of introspective leaning narratives and with a dreamy sonic allure. Equating to this artist’s unique take on electronic dance music. In the second focus single of the EP, HULLAH confides that the track, “Roads” has opened up a path for me to explore my love of dance music within my own songwriting and production. I’m excited for the EP and what’s coming next.

Without a doubt, HULLAH’s distinctive approach to writing shines through in “Roads,” providing ample food for thought for the listening audience. The song reflects his personal journey through the aftermath of a night of clubbing. Portraying the city nightlife as an enthralling escape from reality while also shows him contemplating a longing for clarity and direction.

Listen on Apple Music

HULLAH’s style of dance music is characterized by its ethereal and expansive qualities. Moreover, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that gently encourages the listener to sway and experience a sense of weightlessness. The music envelops the audience in a comforting and soothing embrace, providing a tranquil form of escapism. In contrast with the high-energy propulsion typically associated with dance music driven by euphoria.

Similarly, his poignant and thoughtful approach prompts listeners to respond in a likewise fashion. Immersing themselves above all into the evocative soundscape similarly as a form of soothing escape.

The artist, who lives with ankylosing spondylitis, an inflammatory disease, adds…

“Living with a disease and daily pain, the hours spent dancing is like a marathon to me. Yet the club is a place of worship and helps me get out of myself. I enjoy the freedom and courage I find in myself to dance alone, to let go. As a queer person, it’s also about finding pockets of safety and freedom even within “straight” spaces. I can feel less perceived. I can be unknown.”

Drawing inspiration from iconic pop acts such as Pet Shop Boys, Christine and the Queens, and Everything But The Girl. HULLAH carves his own unique path as an alt-electronic pop innovator. His music is undeniably cool and immensely captivating, granting us a precious glimpse into his compelling world of danceable electronic pop.

Look who bagged themselves yet another “BBC Radio 1 – Hottest Record In The World” last night! None other than Charli XCX and Sam Smith is who! Collaborating on the track “In the City.” Also for those wondering, the track isn’t one of Charli’s very PC Music ones. This one is more in keeping stylistically with the pop Queen’s dance-pop efforts such as “Beg For You,” “Good Ones” and “Gone” as recent examples of her work.

Although Charli and Sam Smith both hail from Hertfordshire and grew up close to one another, it is not the reason why Charli tapped Sam to appear on “In the City.” When interviewed by Radio 1 Clara Amfo at length, Charli recounted the backstory of “In the City,” which she wrote with AG Cook, Ilya Salmanzdeh, Omer Fedi and Sam Smith, confirming the track as an ode to the LGBTQIA+ community.

In the interview, Charli shared that the inspiration for the song came from her experience of performing in queer clubs in London when she was sixteen. It was her first time being surrounded by queer cultures, and she was suddenly exposed to so much fashion, art, music, and language that inspired her greatly.

Listen on Apple Music

Sending out an official statement, Charli confirmed…

“The song is about finding the people you truly love and connect with through wild nights out and partying in magical places. It’s about feeling accepted, the magnificence of being welcomed into queer spaces and those once in a lifetime people you get to meet when you’re there.”

It’s amazing to see two talented artists come together to create a song with such a powerful message. “In the City” is not just a great addition to Charli and Sam’s repertoires – it’s a tribute to the LGBTQIA+ community and a reminder of the importance of inclusion and acceptance.

On a cheeky personal note. Did you know that Charli XCX performed at Electroqueer@Barcode night in 2008? EQ Music Live Presents is the new name, but we still curate intimate live events for the LGBTQ+ Community.

The next show lined up is November 5th, headlined by Tom Goss, plus special guests Nic Billington, Lostchild and Kehli.

Premiere: Watch “Salt” by Floss Jordan https://eqmusicblog.com/premiere-watch-salt-by-floss-jordan/ Thu, 03 Nov 2022 16:18:28 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=32879 Her haunting and ethereal presence found on "Salt" notes newcomer Floss Jordan is quickly becoming noticeable for her future-forward pop.

Last weekend, in the UK. Daylight saving time took place. We shifted the clocks back one hour. Thus meaning, Autumn is officially here. Therefore signifying, days will be both darker and shorter. Plus the rhythm of life noticeably will change also. Meanwhile, the animal kingdom prepares for hibernation. Music, however, doesn’t feel any of these effects so much. Hibernation doesn’t apply in this instance. Yet, at this time of year. Music releases sometimes do tend to slow down a bit. Although as far as I can see this has not yet started to happen. Neither have emerging artists stopped springing up. As a matter of fact. I have a newcomer artist I am excited to introduce to the EQ Music Blog readers. The rising London-based singer-songwriter/ musician Floss Jordan. I am thrilled and also honoured that I get to premiere her brand new release, “Salt” on the blog today.

Floss marked her arrival on the music scene in 2020, with the track “Kings & Queens“. Upon release this. There was nothing but positive feedback, praising the emotive, alt-pop song. An achievement I feel sure is soon to repeat itself, when the new track “Salt” is released tomorrow

Inspired by several toxic relationships. Floss comments that “the song (“Salt“) is about the juxtaposition of saltwater being cleansing, but also corrosive”.

It is fair to say. The offering is not a bubblegum pop effort by any means. The style of pop she uses is that of a haunting, and ethereal musicality with added dramatic flair. When allocating a pop category for Floss. I find that the music sits nicely beside that coming from Christine & the Queens, Björk and Jessie Ware. Although, since listening to “Salt” more than a few times. I note there is a similarity with Imogen Heap which I also deem worthy of a mention.

Floss Jordan’s sophomore offering exudes astute, lyricism, along with intense and intelligent musicality. The video directed by Rebecca Philips matches the earnest feelings present in the song.

In the visual Philips, says she “Wanted to explore. The wounding, yet transformative relationship we may have with ourselves, when we find we are trapped in a toxic place.”

She adds, that the concept visual, “asks that the viewer considers the link between transformation and destruction.”

By night, Floss Jordan is an international DJ. By day she is quickly becoming increasingly noticeable for her future-forward styled pop. As seen in the track “Salt“. Her brand of pop is attention-grabbing. It brings a new sound universe to the listeners.

I won’t lie. Last weekend I spent a big chunk of my time reliving my youth. I was listening to the (Deluxe Edition – 2022 Remaster) of the Rick Astley debut album, “Whenever You Need Somebody.” I had such fun on this nostalgia trip. When I wasn’t listening to Rick or checking out the blog submissions. I was spending some time listening to the emerging alternative electronic artist pop Liz Cass. To tell the truth, this wasn’t the first time I’d looked at her. As a matter of fact. In the last few months she came to my attention, on several occasions. Her new offering, “Near Miss” is the style of track I’ve craved to hear from Liz, and I feel more invested, in.

She’s, picked up acclaim from Notion, Clash and Wonderland magazines. They praised her intimate lyrical style and minimalist production. On the track “Near Miss” Liz broadens her horizons somewhat. She treats listeners to bright electro-pop and a shimmering synth arrangement. I was advised that this song, had a Caroline Polachek-like energy, but I am getting more of a Christine and the Queens vibes, from it to be honest. Nonetheless, it is a departure in sound for her and one I would like to hear Liz explore further.

Listen on Apple Music

“The song shows a different side to me and comes from a less melancholic place”. She says. “I was in a better headspace when I wrote “Near Miss,” and wanted to reflect that with some really uplifting pop. There is no more wallowing from me… At least for a while!” She muses about the latest song to be taken from her forthcoming debut album “The Words” out on October 21st via Ultra Records.

During the video, she explores the idea of reverse gravity, embracing change while reflecting conflicting feelings. Director Conrad Gamble shot the clip around Liz’s favourite East London spots.

In my listening session with Liz Cass, I felt that she faces her own reality head-on, making confident and fearless music. Moreover, she’s blossoming into an interesting electronic pop proposition. In the meantime, she has proven to me that she can handle the bigger sounds, splendidly. I’d say she’s hit upon a winning combination here. One thing is clear – Liz Cass is the alternative electronic pop queen ready to take the world by storm in 2022.

Liz has a live show at the Laylow – London, September 12th – (Information here).

I almost did not bother to tune in to the Hottest Record In The World premiere of “Beg For You“. On the Radio One show “Future Sounds” with Clara Amfo last night. As from the teaser clips shared online in advance of the premiere. I already believed the track was a dancefloor banger. The first sneak-peek came via a cheeky leak from Charli with a snippet of the track. On the same day “New Shapes” (the previous, single release) came out in November. However, I do love the adrenaline-fueled buzz of a premiere. So eventually ended up listening to the much anticipated Charli XCX and Rina Sawayama collaboration as it received its first play.

What’s true of Charli’s ‘Angel’s’ fandom is that they know what works for her. They were craving this collaboration with Rina Sawayama for quite some time. I think this more a case of when, not, if it the collaboration would happen. Choosing the seminal track “Cry For You” from September (Petra Marklund) as a sample was an inspired choice. The song is so iconic and recognisable that most updates on it will never do it justice. However, when Charli and Rina jump on it, they certainly, left their own iconic imprints all over it.

Listen on Apple Music

Something tells me when Charli performs this anthem live on tour, there will be a sea of elevated hands reaching for the sky, amassed in the crowd in front of her. Things will go off, for sure. Charli and Rina’s newest hot take on the track, brilliantly produced by Digital Farm Animals, does not fail to deliver. It burns.

Without question, Charli has snagged another fan favourite here. But again, when is it that any of her tracks are not fan favourites?…

When the news broke, the next single would be coming out. This week was always going to end up, with me writing about the new Charli XCX track featuring Christine and the Queens and Caroline Polachek.

Having noted the follow-up single to “Good Ones” was a collaboration with her good friends and pop artists Christine and the Queens, and Caroline Polachek. Of course, added fuel to this fire. (A feeling similarly felt, when the ladies also began sharing some seriously, sassy press pictures. And, glimpses from the forthcoming “New Shapes” video on social media). As is the customary thing to do. We were drip-fed snippets of the track and images. Right up to the last minute. I am just glad the premiere of “New Shapes” on Apple Music was not overshadowed, with everyone excitable about news from ABBA. Like what had happened the last time when “Good Ones” dropped. This time. Charli has got in a day early of ABBA releasing their much talked about album “Voyage“. Good for her!

Listen on Apple Music

As Charli unleashed the mightiness of “Good Ones” on us. I remember in an interview. She cited Janet Jackson and Cameo as sources of inspiration on the new album. This, wasn’t a style I picked up hearing in the track “Good Ones“. I notice something of a Cameo/Janet Jackson vibe coming through on the latest offering “New Shapes“. The track runs much smoother. And at a slower pace than the, fast and furiousness of “Good Ones“. Whereas, “New Shapes” has a different kind of energy. Being geared around a theme of a softer, styled love ballad. This collaboration could have resulted in many different things. Eg. A big, explosive pop offering. For example. They went with, complementing one another with their gorgeous vocal harmonies, instead.

Speaking with Zane Lowe of Apple Music about the collaboration and the track, Charli said…

“I feel like. We breathe so much energy into each other on this song, and are also so thrilled to watch each other shine. I think this track shows off our love for each other, and the intensity we have when we come together”.

The “New Shapes” video will follow shortly. (Likeliest, next week). We have other news to digest, for now.

Also revealed European and North American tour dates (details HERE).

Watch “La vita nuova” by Christine and the Queens ft Caroline Polachek https://eqmusicblog.com/watch-la-vita-nuova-by-christine-and-the-queens-ft-caroline-polachek/ Wed, 05 Aug 2020 10:02:02 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=28745 Our prayers have been answered. The Christine and the Queens and Caroline Polacheck steamy collaboration "La vita nouva" now has its own vignette.

The post Watch “La vita nuova” by Christine and the Queens ft Caroline Polachek appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

In March of this year, Christine and the Queens released a magnificent, EP and short film named “La vita nuova.” Indeed it was incredibly epic, full of visual splendid and the six electronic-pop tracks it is comprised of, are most excellent. While for the most part, sung, in her native French tongue. When this amazing, release came out, I had my attention firmly gravitated towards the exciting prospects that SXSW was promising. It was the time when the crazy was just getting started, and our first taste of the uncertainty of which, was about to happen first took hold. The opportunity to write about the beloved “La vita nuova” EP which had charmed me over, regrettably went by the wayside.

My intuition told me, another chance would come around to show my appreciation of the project. In the meantime, Chris has been sharing a series of concept videos, in explanation of her great undertaking (filmed at Opéra Garnier, the world-famous Paris opera house.) In truth, it would not have felt right to post up the full fourteen-minute visualizer on the blog (peep it here.) Saying this there is too much music brilliance, and art performance going on, that I felt it unthinkable, the project be would wound-up so quickly. It was only a matter of time before it was given a second wind.

Today is the day, “La vita nouva” gets the vignette treatment. I am so stoked because the title track featuring Caroline Polachek, forms the climactic ending of the feature film. The most, interesting, eye-popping segment if you ask me. When translated “La vita nouva” means “The New Life.” The flirtatious, lyrics indicate that even though the subject of the track is aware they are setting themselves up for heartbreak. They would prefer to run the risk than not to have snatched a heavy-heated moment of bliss, at all. Caroline Polachek’s part in this is as the femme fatale love interest. Although Chris and Caroline’s partnership on camera is steamy. Their music collaboration brings to fore two heavenly voices entwined, complementing one another beautifully.

Like so many musicians, performers and singers, during these times of lock-down and self-isolation, singer-producer Lostchild has rustled up, a new offering, for us to listen, too. He’s opted to delve in on The 1975 track “TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME” from the band’s recent album “A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships.” Giving the dreamy, and evocative Lostchild treatment to the most buoyant electro-pop track from Matty Healy’s band’s third studio album.

So Lostchild has made “TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME” even more 80s. And EQ readers should absolutely, be here for it. Because, this, reimagining is uplifting, spellbinding and soothing. A sound and style experience dished out exactly in that order. If like me, you might feel ordinarily precious about different cover versions of The 1975’s songs. Let me just say this, “TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME” is in safe hands with Lostchild. Joe has served justice upon the flirty pop track, about unfaithful relationships in the digital age.

In light of so many, festivals and tours being either postponed or cancelled in recent days. You may have also noticed a growing number of music artists have taken to the internet to keep us entertained with live-streams and online shows etc. Happy to share, Lostchild is joining in along the ranks of Dan Smith from Bastille, Years & Years (Olly Alexander,) Calvin Harris (Love Generator,) Lauv, Greyson Chance, Christine and the Queens, Madeon, Bright Light Bright Light, Sarah Close and L Devine.
