Strangely, it was soon after a conversation with my son that things swiftly began falling into place. I had not long returned from a Chappell Roan gig at the Brixton Academy and felt the effects of post-gig blues creeping in. I simply inquired, “If there is a band you’d wish to go see, that you haven’t yet. Who would that be”? The spontaneous reply from him was Hurts. The reponse, in turn made me extremely happy, since Hurts is one of my favourite duos from this past decade. Even so, little did I foresee that within a week or two following that conversation I would spend an anxious forty minutes securing concert tickets for a Hurts “15 Years of Happiness” gig in the pre-sale.

I have covered Hurts countless times on the blog since I immensely admire the alternative pop duos’ artistry. Intelligent lyricism, distinctive alt-pop flair, stunning visual aesthetics and uber-arresting music videos. Yet I hadn’t realised the fifteenth anniversary of the duo’s debut album “Happiness” was about to arrive. Neither had it occurred to me that Hurts might go all in with celebrating this milestone. I was however massively happy to find out about the planned London show. And so, the plotting and planning began in earnest.

Listen on Apple Music

Hurts is celebrating a remarkable milestone with the release of “15 Years of Happiness,” a stunning limited edition double-vinyl picture disc that captures the essence of their journey. To honour their legendary debut album, they’ve also unveiled a captivating rendition of “Wonderful Life ’25,” reimagined through the vibrant lens of Italo disco by Purple Disco Machine. This euphoric and uplifting rework contrasts beautifully with the original’s darker tones, breathing new life into a classic. The compelling message of resilience and faith in overcoming struggles strikes a powerful chord today, resonating even more deeply than when the song first graced our ears in 2010.

Moreover, I absolutely made the right call trusting my instincts and grabbing tickets for the Brixton Academy 2025 gig. The crowd erupted with a deafening roar as Theo Hutchcraft stepped onto the stage, akin to the reception reserved for the world’s biggest pop icons. Throughout the evening, it was clear that Theo’s vocals were in outstanding form—simply incredible. The dynamic delivery, sense of melodrama and emotionally charged performances were nothing short of electric. I say this without hesitation: the show was nothing less than phenomenal. You could feel the heart and soul poured into every moment of “Happiness” performed in its entirety. Including a selection of the duos greatest hits and fan favourites that followed in the second half of the performance. This rather felt like we were being treated to a track list from a bonus CD.

The production featured everything from the iconic, stylish dancers seen in Hurts’ early music videos to a magnificent string quartet. A tight backup band, and powerful backup vocalists, topped off with the inclusion of an awe-inspiring opera singer completed the line up. In fact, this gig had it all—except sadly for Hurts’ talented multi-instrumentalist Adam Anderson, who has presently, stepped back from live performances to focus on his mental health. From the very beginning, I anticipated an unforgettable night. I was however, utterly unprepared for just how epic it turned out to be.

A word of advice. If the chance arises to see Hurts live don’t hesitate for a second. Snap up some tickets.

Although Måneskin, the talented Italian rock band that won Eurovision 2021, may not fit neatly into this blog’s focus on pop, electronic, and indie music, I am genuinely excited to share some fabulous news. Damiano David, the charismatic frontman and singer-songwriter, has just released his second solo track, “Born with a Broken Heart.” This alt-synth-pop gem is a striking blend of influences reminiscent of Harry Styles, The Killers/Brandon Flowers, and Hurts. It’s the kind of music that resonates deeply with the music aesthetics covered on, EQ Music Blog and is definitely worthy of our attention!

There’s an undeniable allure when a rock star embraces the pop genre. Take Michael Hutchence from INXS, who masterfully blended his rock roots with pop sensibilities. Similarly, Brandon Flowers from The Killers garnered significant praise for his 2015 synth-pop album, “The Desired Effect.” Both of these charismatic frontmen are perfect examples of artists evolving and thriving in the pop landscape. Now, consider Damiano, whose solo venture stems from a desire to reveal a more personal, vulnerable side of himself. This journey exemplifies the powerful transformation that can come from crossing musical boundaries.

Listen on Apple Music

The song “Born with a Broken Heart” captivates listeners with its uplifting melody, creating an atmosphere that’s both bright and inviting. This melodic backdrop enhances the powerful narrative woven through the lyrics, which deliver deep and emotionally charged storytelling. In this track, Damiano reflects on the journey of entering a meaningful relationship, emphasizing the importance of connecting with one’s feelings. He embraces his vulnerabilities, allowing listeners to relate to the all-too-common struggle of feeling unworthy.

The music video, masterfully directed by Aerin Moreno, captivates with its dark, cinematic vibes that perfectly reflect Hurts’ artistic vision. Overflowing with nostalgic allure, it features contemporary dance sequences that are both expressive and mesmerizing. Furthermore, Damiano’s journey in the pop scene is nothing short of monumental; it feels as though he has made an unforgettable entrance, radiating style and charisma. Damiano David shows he has the ambition, talent and songs to dominate the global airwaves on his own terms.

The post Listen to “Where It Hurts” by Dan Aura appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

Get ready to experience a new sound from Dan Aura, that is equally captivating and unforgettable.

The breakout pop artist and singer-songwriter, is unveiling an exciting new side to his music. His sophomore EP “Where It Hurts“, set for release on May 17th, promises to be a game-changer for his fans. Leading up to the big drop, Dan has teased us with singles “Rewritten” and “Rich Man“, and furthermore, these tracks demonstrate a more authentic and lyrically-driven approach to his song-making. He has also incorporated a reflective and dreamy style, similar to that of Troye Sivan and his tracks like ‘Easy” and “Wild” from “Blue Neighbourhood“. However, nowhere is this more evident than in the title track of Dan’s upcoming EP, “Where It Hurts“.

Speaking about the new song, Dan Aura said: “This was probably one of the most cathartic songs I’ve written, as it almost word for word describes a situation I encountered at the beginning of last year. For me, it’s my “screaming song,” and I think it’ll help a lot of people that have ever felt strung along by someone.”

Listen on Apple Music

It is impossible to ignore the captivating power of “Where It Hurts.” Nor that Dan knows how to connect with his audience. This is because right from the start, Dan has the listener in the palm of his hand with his stripped-down approach. The straightforward, yet effective combination of his heartfelt vocals and the gentle finger-picking of an acoustic guitar creates an intimate atmosphere that draws us in. And just, when you think it cannot get any better, the chorus hits us with an empowering message. That is seen in the anthemic affirmation “I know what I want,” and the bold statement-making of the chant “hit me where it hurts.” And in turn similarly, where these shouty bits leave us feeling invigorated.

Dan is establishing a sound and style that shows an artist with unlimited potential. His artistry feels mature beyond his years and sets him apart from the rest. There’s no doubt that Dan Aura is a name we are going to be hearing a lot in the future. Stay tuned.

Watch “Crush Me Up” by GIRLI https://eqmusicblog.com/watch-crush-me-up-by-girli/ Wed, 20 Mar 2024 10:27:08 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=36546 Renowned for powerful lyricism and inspirational videos, GIRLI makes a bold move with euphoric synth-pop sound in new release, "Crush Me Up."

The post Watch “Crush Me Up” by GIRLI appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

]]>

Alt-pop sensation GIRLI is back with exciting news. After wrapping up the US leg of her world headline tour, she’s closing in on the release of her sophomore album “Matriarchy” on May 17th, 2024. Throughout this album, GIRLI is taking a deeper dive into her identity and pouring all of her emotions into her music. What’s more her girlfriend serves as a significant source of inspiration for these new tracks. These are a beautiful blend of love and feminist themes. Although, as a fan of electronic pop. Above all, I am most excited about her new single “Crush Me Up.” As on the track GIRLI is exploring her synth-pop roots once again.

It’s fascinating to see how GIRLI’s music is evolving in this era. Since noticeably, the recent singles have been quite diverse in terms of their themes. In “Matriarchy,” she delivered an empowering anthem. Whereas “Be With Me” celebrated self-love and “Nothing Hurts Like A Girl” saw her reflect upon heartbreak. With “Crush Me Up,” GIRLI is again taking a new direction, showing her willingness to experiment and grow as an artist.

Explaining “Crush Me Up“, GIRLI said – it’s, “A song about crushing so hard on someone it’s like the image of them is playing on an infinite loop on a TV inside your head. But it’s a nice kind of crush; a required one, you equally thirst for each other.”

Listen on Apple Music

The music video accompanying the song highlights the same theme as the lyrics. The video captures GIRLI getting up close and personal with her crush on the dancefloor, showcasing both intimate moments and moments of pure euphoria. GIRLI is making a bold move to get to know her crush better.

With her newly embraced synth-pop sound and uniquely powerful lyrics, GIRLI is poised to make a significant impact on the music scene.

In May and June, she will hit the UK and Europe, concluding at London’s iconic Heaven venue on 20th June. Tickets are on sale now at https://www.girlimusic.com

This wasn’t on my 2023 bingo card. But wow, I like how GIRLI is really making big waves with her latest releases! I can imagine how exciting it must be for her career-long fans right now. From her empowering feminist anthem “Matriarchy” to her brand new track and music video “Nothing Hurts Like a Girl,” it seems like GIRLI is continuing to push boundaries and create music that really resonates with her audience. Moreover with her upcoming album “Matriarchy” out on 17th May 2024 and tour, there is plenty more to look forward to from this alt-pop icon in the coming months.

Following on from the “Matriarchy” release and notably as she continues to explore her identity in this new track “Nothing Hurts Like a Girl,” GIRLI is totally in her feelings. Only this time, she added even more of a personal touch to the lyrical narrative. Honesty has always been GIRLI’s strength throughout her music career, and she isn’t holding back in this new music either. She candidly opens up a dialogue about her feelings towards her girlfriend.

Listen on Apple Music

The way GIRLI incorporated visual content into her releases is remarkable. The “Matriarchy” video set the bar high. Similarly it’s impressive how she manages to live up to that standard in her subsequent release. It’s worth noting, once more, that credit also goes to video director Claryn Chong, who has an instrumental role in bringing GIRLI’s creative vision to life. Chong’s recent work with GIRLI is a testament to the artist’s candid authenticity, with prominent honest portrayals and well-conceived concepts.

GIRLI kicks off her “Matriarchy” tour, on 22nd February in LA. The UK leg commences May 29th with stops in Cardiff, Dublin, Glasgow, Leeds and Brighton. (Further information, HERE)

Watch “It Hurts To Be Human” by Morgan Saint https://eqmusicblog.com/watch-it-hurts-to-be-human-by-morgan-saint/ Fri, 15 Sep 2023 10:26:33 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=35115 "It Hurts To Be Human" - Morgan Saint responds to life's curveballs with heartfelt synth-pop and a basketball-themed music video.

The post Watch “It Hurts To Be Human” by Morgan Saint appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

]]>

As a result of breaking away from major labels. I recently discovered that New York multi-hyphenate Morgan Saint is currently releasing her latest music independently. The move is not a shock because of the amount of creativity she pours into her work. Morgan’s skillset draws from multiple areas, a multi-instrumentalist, singing, songwriting, producing, designer and director. She is the epitome of a self-made artist. Days ago I was alerted to Morgan’s track “It Hurts To Be Human.” An alternative pop & synth-pop work which is sending Morgan’s music on a new trajectory.

I’m excited to share more about this amazing project that Morgan and her wife, Carley Ridersleeve, have been working on. As creative artists, they have brought to life the entire vision for this newly independent chapter. From engineering and producing the music to styling the looks and directing, shooting, editing, and even colouring the music videos. It’s inspiring to see such a collaborative and multi-talented team bringing their artistic vision to the world.

“This is two girls doing everything ourselves,” Morgan announces. “That’s a huge part of the story. Being a female producer and all-around creative, I’ve seen how gender can be a struggle in this industry. I’d love to have a small part in encouraging a space for more women to be artists, producers, and writers.” She adds.

Listen on Apple Music

I don’t think I need to explain how “It Hurts To Be Human” is such a raw and vulnerable song that perfectly captures the pain of heartbreak. Morgan Saint’s lyrics are so honest and authentic, and it’s clear that she’s been through the ups and downs of relationships herself. Even when you try your best to move on, there’s always a lingering pain that you have to face. It’s tough, but it’s a part of being human. This is what she wants to share in this song.

The video depicts how Morgan finds solace and a sense of release as she lets her emotions out by shooting hoops on the basketball court. With each shot, she feels as though she is shedding her pain and frustration, and instead embracing a sense of renewal and rebirth. Although we do not see the ball swish through the net, we are guided to imagine Morgan feels a weight lifted off her shoulders, and a newfound sense of clarity and peace wash over her.

Listen to “Grave” by Zolita https://eqmusicblog.com/listen-to-grave-by-zolita/ Wed, 07 Jun 2023 07:36:40 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=34601 In her raw, emotive pop song "Grave," Zolita shares her innermost feelings with an openness that is very appealing.

The post Listen to “Grave” by Zolita appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

]]>

Taking a break from blogging summer anthems for a brief minute. I just listened to the new song from queer feminist pop sensation Zolita. A track called “Grave” is absolutely exquisite! According to Zolita, “Grave” talks about choosing to be the bigger person when someone you love hurts you. This is definitely, a powerful message that I think a lot of people can relate to.

Overall I appreciate her talent and how Zolita captures emotions in her songs. Although I will admit, I am not always the biggest fan of Zolita’s rock-pop style of music. However, when she focuses on the pop or ballad elements, then I am all ears. Her latest release, “Grave,” is a slower-paced effort that showcases her affecting vocals and soul-stirring artistry. The song uses a powerful yet delicate approach which I find very appealing.

Listen on Apple Music

The raw emotional pop ballad is autobiographical, telling the story of how Zolita spent a lot of time looking for validation that the love was real after a toxic relationship she was in ended. The lyrics are so honest and vulnerable, and the melody is incredibly catchy. It’s a powerful reminder that we should never settle for less than we deserve in love and that healing takes time.

She says… “it was really cathartic to know I had the power to expose this persons wrongdoings and make them hurt in the same way I did. But in the end I found more power in choosing to keep things to myself and not give this person any more of my energy”.

The past few years have been a whirlwind for Zolita, where she has gained much recognition for her emotionally charged songs and videos. She recently completed her first headlining tour, a resounding success, which sold out completely. Furthermore, $1 from every ticket sold was donated to the Trevor Project, making it a meaningful and impactful tour for all involved.

In addition, Zolita is currently performing in major cities coast-to-coast on Bebe Rexha’s 19-date “Best F’n Night of My Life” U.S. tour.

The post Watch “2 Die 4” by Tove Lo appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

]]>

These days, it is rare for me to cover both the audio and video aspects of a song release. In most instances, I am faced with an either-or situation decision when considering what to post. Having just released the official video for the track “2 Die 4“. Tove Lo should know she is one lucky bean. Since I am dealing out a second helping of EQ Music Blog love upon her current pop banger release again today. Without a doubt, I would go so far as to call “2 Die 4” out as our song of the summer.

To be honest with you. I regarded the visualizer shared upon the July release of the track as sheer hotness. By the same token, I am stoked that Tove Lo did not settle at the Kenny Laubbacher-directed visualiser footage (depicting big d*ck energy). That she has instead served justice upon this euro-pop flavoured smash with a full, video treatment, made this time with Anna-Lisa Himma at the directorial helm.

Speaking about the new video, Tove reveals, “We wanted to make a pop bitch y2k experience. With all the choreo, the outfits, the wetness. I think we more than delivered.”

Listen on Apple Music

Truthfully, it is easy-breezy to become immersed in both engaging videos. The visualiser, for obvious reasons. The official video since it is the first time Tove has properly embraced the pop performance video aesthetic. Where she undergoes multiple outfit changes and experiments with full-on dance sequences.

The dazzling video may have swept you away from noticing the song has an additional verse.

“You tell me you’re so beautiful but you seem really sad about something. You tell me it’s cos’ your heart hurts though with me you don’t feel bad.”

Not that my interest was in anyway waning in “2 Die 4“. Tove Lo nevertheless, chose to step up and add some spice to this already spicy track. Maybe she cannily did this, so that people like me could talk about the track, even more. No one can say Tove Lo isn’t astute. Now an independent artist and embracing every bit of being such, this is where we are witnessing Tove’s creative control in full effect.

Watch “Tequila Sunrise” by Max Barskih https://eqmusicblog.com/watch-tequila-sunrise-by-max-barskih/ Sat, 27 Nov 2021 19:21:25 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=31371 Sensual music and dirty dancing! It is all going on in the Max Barskih video for "Tequila Sunrise". And we've an extra treat in store...

The post Watch “Tequila Sunrise” by Max Barskih appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

]]>

When hearing the announcement this summer that plans were in place to launch our favourite Ukrainian pop megastar Max Barskih internationally – our feelings were both a mixture of delight and surprise. We have always thought Max has the necessary credentials and artist profile that befit that of a global pop phenom. And have often questioned why his bid for international megastardom has always seemingly been on the back step.

In August, Max made a bold move when he released “Just Fly” being stylistically very different. The vibe, being a modern take on doo-wop, combined with pop sensibilities was showing everyone he is a versatile artist and accomplished mission one. So it is on with the next step, which is, again quite, different. “Tequila Sunrise” is an intoxicating offering. Somewhat moody and notably Hurts, like, (by way of comparison) – a step into the alt-pop arena.

Listen on Apple Music

Max describes the song as being…

“This song is special for me. She is about magnetism between people. About the pain and the dance that will end one way or another. But while the music is playing, the two dissolve into each other.”

The Alan Badoev directed music video approach is more of an art form and less outwardly provocative. But nonetheless. Intimate and sizzling with sexual chemistry. i.e. there is a lot of PDA being expressed. Couples, getting very steamy and into one another. They are brought together by sensual music and a dirty dancing creation.

As I predicted in my blog post for “Just Fly“. I do feel “Tequila Sunrise” exhibits a music style that resonates better with a UK audience. Too bad for us, that Max Barskih did not release this one last week when he was over here in London. We would have so loved to have seen this one played live.

Yes, EQ was there at the London show. Raj made it down to the packed and sold-out gig at Scala. The tickets were a whack load of money as well, £110 each. Raj thought to catch a few highlights for us to take a look at.

Interesting facts:

95% of the show was sung by Max in Ukrainian – no full English songs.

The show was a love letter to his Ukrainian, Russian and Eastern European fans in London.

I have it on good authority from Raj. During the gig, Max mentioned that the next album is sung in English only. Perhaps the Scala show was the last hurrah before the focus switches on the English language market.

To tell the truth, I cannot stop watching this clip. Because I can absolutely feel there was lots of energy in the room.

Do you feel it also?
