Strangely, it was soon after a conversation with my son that things swiftly began falling into place. I had not long returned from a Chappell Roan gig at the Brixton Academy and felt the effects of post-gig blues creeping in. I simply inquired, “If there is a band you’d wish to go see, that you haven’t yet. Who would that be”? The spontaneous reply from him was Hurts. The reponse, in turn made me extremely happy, since Hurts is one of my favourite duos from this past decade. Even so, little did I foresee that within a week or two following that conversation I would spend an anxious forty minutes securing concert tickets for a Hurts “15 Years of Happiness” gig in the pre-sale.

I have covered Hurts countless times on the blog since I immensely admire the alternative pop duos’ artistry. Intelligent lyricism, distinctive alt-pop flair, stunning visual aesthetics and uber-arresting music videos. Yet I hadn’t realised the fifteenth anniversary of the duo’s debut album “Happiness” was about to arrive. Neither had it occurred to me that Hurts might go all in with celebrating this milestone. I was however massively happy to find out about the planned London show. And so, the plotting and planning began in earnest.

Listen on Apple Music

Hurts is celebrating a remarkable milestone with the release of “15 Years of Happiness,” a stunning limited edition double-vinyl picture disc that captures the essence of their journey. To honour their legendary debut album, they’ve also unveiled a captivating rendition of “Wonderful Life ’25,” reimagined through the vibrant lens of Italo disco by Purple Disco Machine. This euphoric and uplifting rework contrasts beautifully with the original’s darker tones, breathing new life into a classic. The compelling message of resilience and faith in overcoming struggles strikes a powerful chord today, resonating even more deeply than when the song first graced our ears in 2010.

Moreover, I absolutely made the right call trusting my instincts and grabbing tickets for the Brixton Academy 2025 gig. The crowd erupted with a deafening roar as Theo Hutchcraft stepped onto the stage, akin to the reception reserved for the world’s biggest pop icons. Throughout the evening, it was clear that Theo’s vocals were in outstanding form—simply incredible. The dynamic delivery, sense of melodrama and emotionally charged performances were nothing short of electric. I say this without hesitation: the show was nothing less than phenomenal. You could feel the heart and soul poured into every moment of “Happiness” performed in its entirety. Including a selection of the duos greatest hits and fan favourites that followed in the second half of the performance. This rather felt like we were being treated to a track list from a bonus CD.

The production featured everything from the iconic, stylish dancers seen in Hurts’ early music videos to a magnificent string quartet. A tight backup band, and powerful backup vocalists, topped off with the inclusion of an awe-inspiring opera singer completed the line up. In fact, this gig had it all—except sadly for Hurts’ talented multi-instrumentalist Adam Anderson, who has presently, stepped back from live performances to focus on his mental health. From the very beginning, I anticipated an unforgettable night. I was however, utterly unprepared for just how epic it turned out to be.

A word of advice. If the chance arises to see Hurts live don’t hesitate for a second. Snap up some tickets.

Watch “Romeo” by Charlotte OC https://eqmusicblog.com/watch-romeo-by-charlotte-oc/ Wed, 21 May 2025 11:06:22 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=38881 Smoky-voiced alt-pop enchantress Charlotte OC undergoes a renaissance which is further elevated in her latest offering "Romeo"

It has been some considerable time since we last explored the smoky-voiced alt-pop enchantress Charlotte OC in this blog. In her early years, she made a powerful impression, drawing us in with a haunting musical presence that resonated with intoxicating dark pop allure. While she has undeniably ventured into varied musical territories since then. The core of her artistry remains anchored in those signature brooding sensibilities and a profound sense of melancholy. As we look further ahead in 2025, Charlotte is poised for an artistic renaissance. Following her evocative March release “God, We Tried,” she unveils another intriguing facet of her reimagined sound with “Romeo“. A standout track from her newly announced EP, “Seriously Love, Go Home.”

I’ve previously noted Charlotte’s vocal resemblance to Stevie Nicks, but on “Romeo,” this connection is strikingly evident. From the very first notes, the remarkable similarity between these two artists commands attention. The track’s music soundscape is expertly crafted with a folk-pop allure that echoes the timeless sounds of Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. This synergy is nothing short of perfect, further elevated by the exceptional production from Dimitri Tikovoi, whose credentials include work with Placebo, Purple Disco Machine, Charli XCX, and Nicola Roberts.

Listen on Apple Music

While “God, We Tried” delved into the depths of grief and fractured love. “Romeo” above all emerges as its warm, redemptive counterpart. A swooning, soul-infused anthem about serendipitously meeting someone at precisely the right moment.

This renaissance could not be more timely for Charlotte OC. Her EP “Seriously Love, Go Home” delivers a captivating new sound, offering an unflinching glimpse into a woman navigating chaos and reclaiming her strength. What Charlotte brings to the table is nothing less than invigorating and brilliantly original. Throughout the EP, she invites you into her journey, revealing new dimensions of herself and the world around us.

“‘Seriously Love, Go Home‘ is the sound of me finally facing myself. It’s the aftermath of grief, self-sabotage, love gone wrong, and crawling back to the one place I never thought I’d return to. It’s hope and helplessness. It’s exactly what I needed to make to get myself through that time” – Charlotte OC

Charlotte OC is to make a stunning return to the stage after a three-year hiatus, headlining shows in Manchester and London this July. Including a highly anticipated performance at SXSW London in June. Mark your calendars for these unforgettable dates: –

Tuesday, 3rd June at Devonshire Square – BME (Western Courtyard) from 20:00 to 20:30
Thursday, 5th June at Hoxton Hall from 21:00 to 21:30
Wednesday, 2nd July at The Lower Third – London 19:00
Thursday 3rd July at SOUP – Manchester 19:00

These intimate performances promise to be emotional and powerful celebrations, heralding an exciting new chapter in Charlotte OC’s musical journey. Don’t miss this chance to witness her remarkable comeback!

Watch “Save The Night” by Julian Perretta https://eqmusicblog.com/watch-save-the-night-by-julian-perretta/ Tue, 28 May 2024 10:39:17 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=37038 In the wake of his recent collaborations, Julian Perretta is releasing his own solo material again. The Europop direction of
"Save The Night" does not disappoint

Last April, I featured the Purple Disco Machine and Kungs production collaboration on the track “Substitution.” The track went on to amass 300 million streams and 60 million on YouTube since its release. However, at the time of writing, I failed to name the vocalist of the track. This was quite an oversight on my part, and I wanted to give credit where it is due. So here I am giving English singer-songwriter and producer, Julian Peretta the mention he deserves. By no small coincidence, Julian himself has a new track out, “Save The Night,” on which Purple Disco Machine appears as a co-writer and co-producer of the track.

Julian Perretta broke out in 2010 with his critically acclaimed album “Stitch Me Up,” but hasn’t replicated the success as a solo artist. As a collaborator though, Julian has appeared in some of the biggest dance tracks, namely teaming up with Jonas Blue and Lost Frequencies. Yet since, reaping plaudits for the recent collaborative releases, maybe he has a taste for releasing his own solo tracks once more.

Listen on Apple Music

Last new music Friday, he unleashed his latest offering, “Save The Night.” The song comes suitably replete with a night time themed, neon bright video. The track is a glittering electro-pop release with a distinctive euro disco-pop edge. It sounds somewhat akin in style to the brilliant Agnes album “Magic Still Exists.” Moreover, I believe this track has the potential to reignite Julian Perretta’s solo career, particularly in Europe initially. The song’s vibe reminds me of the tunes frequently played on European radio stations during my visits there.

I haven’t been informed, but I truly anticipate “Save The Night” to signal a new solo era for Julian. This track has only increased my excitement and has me fully engaged. I shall closely monitor Julian Perretta, and if Euro disco-pop is indeed his new direction, readers can anticipate more of my enthusiastic support for him on the blog.

Watch “One on One” by The Knocks & Sofi Tukker https://eqmusicblog.com/watch-one-on-one-by-the-knocks-sofi-tukker/ Thu, 14 Dec 2023 12:44:03 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=35751 "One on One" finds frequent collaborators The Knocks and Sofi Tukker in their disco era. The creative synergy only deepens with each link-up.

Fans of The Knocks and Sofi Tukker, will be excited to know that these frequent collaborators are back with yet another hot release. Following the success of previous link ups on tracks “Best Friend” and “Brazilian Soul,” the dynamic duos have come together once more to create an electro dance-pop track called “One On One.” Moreover, it also seems that their creative synergy is only getting stronger with each collaboration.

On the collaboration SOFI TUKKER said…

“The first people who basically ever heard “Drinkee” were Ben “B-Roc” Ruttner and James “JPatt” Patterson from The Knocks. The first ones to introduce us to people in the industry were The Knocks. The first tour we ever went on, as first of 3, was with The Knocks. They are the definition of Day Ones. We did “Best Friend“, we did “Brazilian Soul“, now we have “One on One“. Couldn’t be happier to still be releasing music with the OG New York gang”.

You won’t believe “One On One” is giving incredible disco vibes! It has come to my notice the dynamic duo SOFI TUKKER has a way of curbing their zaniness when working with The Knocks. Thus helping them to deliver the full measure of their impassioned pop-making. Similarly, with a video that’s sure to mesmerise. I can’t help but be excited about what SOFI TUKKER and The Knocks has in store for us. Don’t miss out on this amazing collaboration that will have you dancing all night long!

Listen on Apple Music

The Gina Gizella Manning-directed video featuring The Knocks and SOFI TUKKER is a must-see for all disco lovers. The video captures the alluring vibe of the 70s disco era. And perfectly visualizes the lyrical narrative that expresses the physical chemistry between potential lovers. The beat-making skills of The Knocks are unmatched, bringing their funk-pop A-game to the table. SOFI TUKKER’s effervescent panache adds a whole new level of energy to the mix, making this collaboration a true masterpiece.

Did you know that “One On One” is more than just a collaboration between The Knocks and SOFI TUKKER? In fact, the songwriting team for the track is a powerhouse of talent, consisting of Tino Schmidt (aka Purple Disco Machine), Martina Sorbara of Dragonette and Adam Pallin (The Knocks producer). With such an impressive team behind it, it’s no wonder that “One On One” is such a catchy and dynamic tune. I definitely appreciate the creative genius that went into making it!

Watch “Substitution” by Purple Disco Machine, Kungs https://eqmusicblog.com/watch-substitution-by-purple-disco-machine-kungs/ Fri, 07 Apr 2023 09:01:41 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=33878 The 80s-inspired disco pop of Purple Disco Machine & Kungs track "Substitution," is utterly enjoyable. The video makes the song even better.

]]>

Having put in a lot of effort last weekend. I am getting caught up with what’s been going on in music while I was away on vacation. With that said, I am still in the holiday frame of mind because of the sunshine finally coming out these past few days. The result of both these things is I have hankered for unapologetic sunshine pop tracks in my music listening this week. Consequently, but not surprisingly. I was immediately drawn to the track “Substitution,” the latest release from Purple Disco Machine, Kungs because it is noted for its disco influence.

In his latest offering, Purple Disco Machine has linked with Kungs. A fresh-faced producer recognised for his ‘house music’ styled productions, hailing from the south of France. This collaboration of internationally acclaimed producers has sought influence from an instantly recognisable 80s hit, which thankfully isn’t “Blue” by Eiffel 65. Instead, Purple Disco Machine and Kungs are sampling the iconic 1984 hit “Big in Japan” from Alphaville. On its own, a track my fifteen-year-old self was massively obsessed with back in the day.

They bring “Big In Japan” into 2023 by interpolating the rhythmically catchy synth-pop melody with shimmering Italo-disco stylings. They also beef up the bassline for a bit of added oomph.

Listen on Apple Music

Obviously, if a music video weren’t interesting to watch or amazing, or both, I wouldn’t draw your attention to it. The clip for “Substitution” is at least one of those things. Strange things happen when Purple Disco Machine (Tino Schmidt) stops to pick up a hitchhiker, Kungs (Valentin Brunel) in the Swim Club-directed video. Mysterious, unexplainable happenings occur. Therefore you should take a look at it if, at the very least, it is a method of getting people to listen to this splendid tune.

Let’s face it, everyone loves 80s-influenced disco-pop from time to time. “Substitution” happens to be brilliantly good…

Watch “Dopamine” by Purple Disco Machine Ft Eyelar https://eqmusicblog.com/watch-dopamine-by-purple-disco-machine-ft-eyelar/ Thu, 23 Sep 2021 11:08:32 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=30934 Because lately, lazing on the beach has been our vibe. Seeking a fix of "Dopamine" by Purple Disco Machine ft Eyelar makes very good sense...

The post Watch “Dopamine” by Purple Disco Machine Ft Eyelar appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

To be honest, it has been only a few hours since we arrived back home. Our heads are still very much wrapped up in a holiday state of mind right now and we are trying our best to ease ourselves back into the daily grind and all that it entails. But, while we’ve been away, topping up our suntan and cooling ourselves down with many refreshing glasses of raspberry and peach Gintonica cocktails. We have continued to delve into the treasure trove of new music releases in the EQ mailbag at leisure. We didn’t get time to write up a post about the latest Purple Disco Machine release, the track “Dopamine,” before we went on our travels. However, it is still dope and also superbly suits our current mood.

Besides, our publicist friends have been trying their hardest to persuade us to write about Purple Disco Machine for the longest time. “Dopamine” has us cracked because of its unmistakable use of 80s stylings, and Pharrell meets Laura Branigan esque groove. There really wasn’t a more suitable fit than plugging this Purple Disco Machine track written about the feel-good hormone “Dopamine” into my ears. This track WAS definitely a contributing factor of how I topped up my Dopamine levels while sunbathing beneath the golden sunshine these past two weeks.

Listen on Apple Music

Joining the internationally acclaimed producer on the track is the Dutch-born singer/songwriter, Eyelar. She’s already notched up a stellar career to date, having written and collaborated with Demi Lovato, Little Mix, Charli XCX, Bastille and David Guetta. But is also pushing forward with a solo recording career. A transition which in the evidence of this track is heating up considerably.

Although the master brains behind the Purple Disco Machine moniker, Tino Schmidt career almost spans a decade. He makes his official music video debut in the James Fitzgerald directed clip for “Dopamine“. In keeping with the retro vibe, he’s etched into the Purple Disco Machine brand so far. Tino takes inspiration from the iconic Robert ZemeckisBack To The Future” trilogy. The plot. A time-travelling mission to rescue Eyelar from 2021 and transport her back to the neon era of the pop culture saturated 1980s.

I haven’t watched this music video as much as I have listened to the track. Because switching off for the last two weeks, and lazing on a hot sunny beach has been my vibe. And yes, please. If anyone should know how I go about snapping up a one-way time-travelling ticket for myself… do tell. Not to get all “Yesterday” movie on you, living in a time when Ed Sheeran’sShape of You” hasn’t existed yet or can be heard playing in every leisure establishment on the promenade, sounds good to me.

EQ reader JD pointed me in the direction of Anna Abreu who has a new song and video out now to a hot track called “Vinegar” which wins a personal nod from me for having more than one cool thing in a video.

 • Blue and Silver mylar balloons – check
 • Shirtless boys – check
 • 1920’s style black fringe dress – check
 • Purple smoke machine – check

In reading up on her, I wasn’t surprised to find out that she was a contestant on Finnish Idol. And with that said, I immediately Googled her on Pop Poster Girl to find out the whole story. Because as you know, PPG is a walking and blogging encyclopedia for all things International Idol and that’s why I love her.

The only thing I find strange about “Vinegar” is the song title. Next time one of my evil ex’s comes up to me in a bar, I’m going to say “you’re vinegar in my dreams”…I’m sure that will put them off totally.
