It’s no surprise that Kim Petras is set to perform at PRIDE events this summer, as her presence has become a staple of these celebrations. It would truly feel incomplete without her as a headliner or at least part of the lineup. This summer presents an excellent opportunity for this pop powerhouse to not only thrill fans with her extensive repertoire of beloved hits but also to introduce fresh material. Given the hints about her time in the studio, it was therefore, highly likely she may debut some new tracks. When she first released “POLO,” fans were pleasantly surprised to see her embrace a full-on club-ready, EDM sound, showcasing her evolving artistry.

Following the much-anticipated unveiling, Bunheads have become fervently enthusiastic about the track “POLO,” but their excitement doesn’t stop there. A significant number of fans have been vocal about their desire for Kim to share another electrifying track, “Freak It,” which recently featured in her sets. It’s easy to understand why this bass-heavy club anthem has the Bunheads buzzing with excitement. Notably, the infectious energy and powerful beats are perfect for a lively night out. Moreover, the influence of last summer’s “BRAT” effect has carried over. As we see its impact resonating with some of pop’s leading ladies, including the vibrant Kesha, who is similarly riding a wave of popularity this summer. And now it appears Kim is also hopping on this trend. Either way the embrace of electrifying electro by such artists is creating a thrilling atmosphere in the current music scene.

Speaking of “Freak It”, Kim says…

I miss the chaos and joy of artists like LMFAO and Avicii, and honestly, I just want to lose my mind at clubs this summer listening to this song. The fans yelling at me to release it basically did me a favor. God was definitely in the studio that day.”

Currently, collaborations with the dynamic duo Frost Children are creating a significant buzz in the music industry. Their exceptional talent in hyper-pop production has played a pivotal role in shaping Babymorocco‘s debut album, “Amour.” An album that has not only received critical acclaim from music reviewers but has also captured the hearts of fans, establishing a strong presence in the genre. Similarly, the Frost Children make an impression for Kim’s “Freak It,” which delivers an electrifying surge of synth-pop energy. This song perfectly blends vibrant, pulsating synths with a backdrop of frenetic bass beats, creating an exhilarating listening experience.

I think we can assume the era that follows next shall be Kim’s boldest yet.

Emerging artist and producer Babymorocco makes a notable impact with his debut album “Amour,” which encompasses a well-rounded sixteen tracks. Upon release in December 2024, this substantial offering was not only a catalyst for gigs and touring opportunities but also spotlights his creative range. Each track serves as an effective club banger, demonstrating his potential as an influential crossover figure in the pop and club scenes. In fact, listening to “Amour” in conjunction with Charli XCX‘s “BRAT” reveals a thoughtful transition between the two albums. Thus showcasing a shared innovative spirit. Building on his impressive debut, Babymorocco has now unleashed a deluxe edition titled “Amour: The Jean Paul Deluxe,” enhancing the listening experience and his artistic exploration further.

So now comes “Amour: The Jean Paul Edition“. This is a four-track intro and conclusion to Amour, showcasing its key figure. Jean Paul is more than just a remix or added bonus tracks. As Babymorocco puts it, “he’s a rupture. A split. A mirror cracked!!” This deluxe offering mixes club vibes, and some deep ideas. Inspired by performance artists like Nikki S. Lee, who really dove into different subcultures and became the subject. Babymorocco creates characters that reflect both self-erasure and self-expansion. Moreover, encouraging listeners to explore these experiences.

The Boys & The Girls” is the opening track from the deluxe release that effectively captures attention. This vibrant hyper-electro tune serves as a thoughtful platform for Babymorocco’s exploration of religious iconography within a pop context. By intentionally not specifying sexuality, the song skillfully addresses the complexities of personal identity and the uncertainty of romantic connections, encouraging listeners to reflect on their own journeys of self-discovery and belonging.

By translating these themes into a visual realm, this project, self-directed by Babymorocco, crafts a compelling and loose retelling of Adam and Eve. It’s a daring choice, but I wouldn’t expect anything less from Babymorocco as he explores such creative avenues. The project, aptly named “Amour,” resonates deeply and is unmistakably fitting.

Alongside the video release, Babymorocco announces The Jean Paul Tour 2025 across the UK, Europe and the US later this year. The tour takes in special headline shows at London’s Village Underground, El Cid in Los Angeles, New York City’s Elsewhere Zone One, and more.

Tickets are available here now.

Babymorocco is an emerging artist I spotlighted on the blog last year after being captivated by the London-based electronic artist/producer’s bodacious and ear-popping debut EP, “The Sound.” However, that EP was just the appetizer for the feast of electronic and wordplay mastery that is to follow. In recent months, he has been building momentum for the release of his debut album. This body of work, “Amour,” marks a new era in Rocco’s beat-making, where EDM influences gain prominence and his wordy rapping style firmly places him in the club scene. His crazy, glitchy-strewn beats and fast-paced vocals perfectly capture his hedonistic party-boy persona.

The arrival of singles “Crazy Cheap“, “Really Hot,” “Babestation” and “Bikinies and Trackies,” further demonstrate his somewhat provocative, experimental explorations in the EDM genre. Moreover, Rocco adheres to a concept in his “Amour” album.

Of his debut album, the innovative electronic-pop artist says: “’Amour’ is a fast-paced, 16-track journey into living and becoming Babymorocco. It’s a story of transformation as I leave London and reunite in Paris with Jean Paul; the love of my life and a part of myself that I had lost. This course proves the adage: you can take the party boy out of London, but you can’t take the London out of the party boy.”

Tickets for Babymorocco’s upcoming gig at Omeara – London on 15th February – details here

Hey there! Since the last “This Beat is Poptronik” playlist update in June, a lot has happened in the music world.

The summer months have been abuzz with album releases from some of the biggest names in the industry. It’s been a period of incredible experiences where I have relished getting stuck in, championing and supporting the latest album releases from Troye Sivan, Georgia, Kylie Minogue, OMD, Moyka, Kim Petras and Romy. As we head into Fall 2023, as your EQ hosts, Raj and I, are excited to present a new and exciting playlist for all your cosy days at home and away. Whether you’re relaxing on the couch or exploring the great outdoors, expect to hear some of the best pop, electronic and indie tracks released in Q2. Are you ready? Let’s unpack, “This Beat Is Poptronik – Fall 2023“…

This Beat Is Poptronik” – Fall 2023 features…

In July, Troye Sivan returned with a dance track, “Rush.” The first single from his third album, “Something To Give Each Other.” This Latin-influenced track was supported with a steamily choreographed video that we have on replay in our heads whenever we listen to “Rush.” In our opinion, this is more than a good enough reason to peg it at the top of the playlist.

We didn’t see this one coming from The Killers, “Your Side of Town.” Since, listening to the track, I couldn’t help but notice the similarities to the music styles of Pet Shop Boys (musically) and New Order (melody/top-line). This epic, impactful track will surely pique the interest of 80s music fans especially.

For the 35th anniversary. The Cash Cash remix of “Tell It To My Heart” has the iconic dance hit up to date. The fact that Taylor Dayne rerecorded the vocal on this new 2023 version just adds to its appeal. Her powerhouse voice still sounds as amazing as ever.

Speaking of comebacks, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, (OMD) really played a blinder on the new album “Bauhaus Staircase“. A massive win for electronic music this year, bulldozing in at #2 in the Official album charts. So many rich pickings from this release, but feel “Veruschka,” is particularly spellbinding. Highly cinematic and fans of The Sound Of Arrows, in particular, are sure to love it.

Besides the above. Embedded in “This Beat Is Poptronik” – Fall 2023 playlist there’s more gems not to be missed from… Sia, Bananarama, Harry Styles, Lauv, Bright Light Bright Light, Zee Machine and Georgia.

Some emerging artists for your radar…

I have waxed lyrical on EQ Music Blog about Nic Billington for years. His music style is electronic with a dark pop aesthetic. There is no doubt whatever Nic puts out is consummate, slick, and stylish. The latest release, a reimagining of Billy Idol‘s track “White Wedding” is super hot in more ways than one. (Ahem… I will say no more than check out the must-see video)

I have lost count of how many times Bentley Robles has featured on the blog this year. With confidence, I can say the “Ugly Crier” EP is a testament to Bentley’s growth as an artist. His takeover of the pop scene is seen through a magic music formula of electro-pop and confessional lyrics.

Chappell Roan – “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl“. I do feel that countries outside the USA, including the UK, still have some catching up to do when it comes to recognizing the talent of this young artist. She is a tenacious pop spirit with exuberance in abundance. Stay tuned… I think Chappell has got what it takes to be the next big pop star.

Quirky pop star! Babymorocco is here to slay with doses of groovealicious electro-pop, thumpa thumpa basslines and pure unadulterated donk. The track “Everyone” is taken from the debut EP “The Sound.” This makes for a groovalicious experience, comprised of hyper-pop beats reminiscent of the music by Calvin Harris and Basshunter from the 2000s. It’s rare to come across music like this in 2023, but this EP resoundingly delivers.

Check out Khazali for easy-listening pop songs with a touch of synths, catchy melodies and lyrics worth listening to. Tracks “Did It For Love” and “Magic” are a perfect blend of soulful funky groove and heated-up aesthetic.

Stay ready for another thrilling update to this playlist as the year comes to a close! We can’t wait to share more of our music taste with you, including more of the latest, “This Beat Is Poptronik” news. So make sure to stay tuned for an updated playlist that will undoubtedly get you moving and grooving!

Happy Tuesday, EQ readers. I am simply in a state of buzz about Babymorocco today’s blog post. Let me explain…

I stumbled upon a new artist discovery yesterday I hadn’t planned to feature on the blog. However, sometimes, I must do what the pop gods telepathically instruct me. Therefore, I bite the bullet, break free from the schedule and go with the flow instead.

It happened during one of my many daily doom-scrolling missions through social media. I came across a video clip from The Great Escape festival about an incredibly talented artist named Babymorocco. (They are one of the first 50 acts lined up for next years festival). I was so intrigued by what I saw and heard that my music blogger instinct immediately kicked in. I couldn’t resist doing some research about them. In fact, I was so invested in learning more about this amazing artist, that in my urgency for Babymorocco knowledge, I hastily scoffed my dinner last night.

You see, the video clip I glimpsed looked so energised and fun that I needed to find out for myself about this curious artist cooking up a storm of experimental electronics. ‘As sugary as it is dirty‘.

“London-based musician Babymorocco preaches from the Church of the Club. His poppy; experimental electronica is as sugary as it is dirty, a melange of ‘filthy house beats and pure, unadulterated donk.” (Artist bio).

The debut, “The Sound” EP, is a groovalicious experience, comprised of hyper-pop beats and attention-seeking sexy electro-pop. The EP consists of seven tracks that reminded me of the music by Calvin Harris and Basshunter from the 2000s yet, with a twist of techno beats and strong thumpa thumpa basslines present. It’s rare to come across music like this in 2023, but this EP resoundingly, delivers.

I know that the music might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Yet, that’s what good art is all about… dividing opinion. Although he appears aloof and quirky. If anyone thinks making music is his way of taking the piss, they couldn’t be more wrong. Babymorocco, aka Clayton Pettet, is one to stir the pot for arts sake. In fact, he is serious about his creative art endeavours. He gained a lot of attention and media frenzy almost ten years ago. Because of a massively hyped performance piece that happened during his art school days. (Google it for yourselves).

As seen countless times. When artists push boundaries and challenge the status quo, they are exciting to watch. Babymorocco is definitely one to watch in that regard.
