Though I’ve been on summer vacation for the last few days, I found it nearly impossible to disconnect completely. The primary reason for this was the latest, Conan Gray release. Namely, the track and accompanying music video for “Vodka Cranberry.” This beautifully poignant song not only showcases Gray’s signature blend of pop and introspective lyrics but also serves as a natural continuation from his recent single “This Song.” Together, these tracks lay the groundwork for the highly anticipated fourth album, “Wishbone,” which arrives on August 15th. The excitement surrounding this project is undeniable, especially with fans eager to see how his sound evolves.

In my coverage on the blog, I have consistently favoured Conan’s vibrant pop and electronic soundscapes. Yet, this time, I am thoroughly captivated by the profound vulnerability of his bedroom pop aesthetic. The evocative portrayals of a same-sex relationship, both lyrically and visually, are undeniably powerful and resonate on a deep emotional level. What Conan is illustrating here is the stark reality of a love affair in decline. It’s crucial to ask: is it truly kind to yourself to stay with someone who does not love you, just because both parties are too afraid to end the relationship? It’s time to confront these hard truths.

Listen on Apple Music

The official music video, serves as a poignant continuation of the storyline presented in “This Song.” The clip is expertly directed by Danica Kleinknecht and features the talented Corey Fogelmanis, whose performance adds an extra layer of authenticity. This bittersweet visual narrative undoubtedly stirs a whirlwind of emotions, capturing the essence of longing and nostalgia. The cinematography beautifully complements the lyrical themes, as it artfully pulls at the heartstrings in a way that resonates deeply with viewers, mirroring the song’s powerful emotional impact. Each scene evokes a sense of yearning, enhancing both the audio and visual experiences.

In “Wishbone,” Conan Gray skillfully returns to his foundations as a singer-songwriter, drawing inspiration from the profound experience of first love. This artistic exploration enables him to exhibit his creative abilities with unprecedented clarity and depth more than ever before.

EMERGING ARTIST: STAN PRATT https://eqmusicblog.com/emerging-artist-stan-pratt/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 07:31:32 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=39036 We're in for the long haul. As Stan Pratt infuses his music with a nostalgic, yet fresh vibe, his deep love for 80s synth-pop inspires his music's bold, maximalist feel.

I am absolutely thrilled about this week’s standout release: “Je Ne Sais Quoi,” the debut track from London’s very own self-proclaimed “Pop Girlie Boy,Stan Pratt. Now, I can already hear the questions: Doesn’t Kylie have a track with the same name? Is this a reimagining? The answer is a resounding no. Kylie recorded “Je ne sais pas pourquoi” for her iconic 1988 debut album “Kylie,” but these two tracks couldn’t be more different in sound and style. Kylie embodies that classic disco and dance-pop flair we all love, while Stan Pratt is here to push boundaries with his bold, maximalist pop infused with an alternative edge.

Interestingly, I see a parallel between Stan and the current alt-pop sensation Chloe Qisha, who holds a degree in psychology. Stan brings a unique twist of his own, boasting a degree in neuroscience. (Surprised? I certainly was!). This combination of academic prowess and musical talent is sure to create something truly unique.

Listen on Apple Music

Describing the debut offering “Je Ne Sais Quoi,” the song is playful and upbeat albeit notably brimming with a vibrant, cool and thought-provoking narrative, teeming with tongue-in-cheek lyricism.

“I wrote it about a certain category of male narcissist, and at the start of the song, I allude to the way he’s been shaped by his upbringing.” Though the track’s protagonist was “treasured like an angel from the skies”, he’s now “dancing with the devil just to bring you down a level” – in other words, precisely the kind of bad boy who’s tough to resist,” Stan explains.

Stan’s deep love for 80s synth-pop infuses his music with a nostalgic yet fresh vibe that truly resonates with me. While I’m not aware of him covering any of Kylie’s tracks. I can confidently say that his rendition of Bronski Beat’sSmalltown Boy” is a must-listen (check it out here). It’s a brilliant interpretation that showcases his unique style!

When exploring new music and emerging artists, I always trust my instincts. In this case, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of excitement about Stan Pratt. I genuinely believe I’m in for the long haul with his sound. If you’re a fan of Charli XCX, MARINA, Alfie Templeman, or Conan Gray, then I have no doubt you’ll find yourself equally captivated by Stan Pratt.

As a music enthusiast, I couldn’t help but share the exciting news about independent singer-songwriter Mad Tsai. He is all set to kick off his Europe/UK tour dates next month at Colours, Hoxton in London. Furthermore, he’s an artist I believe EQ Music Blog readers will find intriguing. The talented Gen Z artist has rapidly gained popularity on TikTok, thanks to his viral release “Stacy’s Brother” – a brilliant reinterpretation of the 2003 Fountains of Wayne hit “Stacy’s Mom“. And if that wasn’t enough, Mad Tsai has just released a brand new song called “all-american bitch!.” Of which I’m sure will only add to his growing fanbase. With all this buzz surrounding him, it’s the perfect time to get familiar with Mad Tsai’s music and witness his undeniable talent firsthand.

This independent popster is definitely one to look out for! He’s gaining recognition for his powerful lyrics that tell the story of his experiences as a queer Asian Latinx person navigating through life. His hit track “Stacy’s Brother” is a beautiful ode to queer love and coming of age. Furthermore, he makes it clear that he won’t stop writing songs that explore diverse identities and experiences. His latest track “all-american bitch!” is a great example of this. Moreover, as it delves into themes of American identity, beauty standards, ethnicity and the American dream.

Listen on Apple Music

“They’ll never look like me the boys on my TV. Worshipping the violence of guns and football teams. I base my self-esteem on god and beauty queens. Can you really blame me? I’m just chasing the american dream”. He sings.

Mad Tsai is a rising star in the music industry, and for good reason. His unique sound and meaningful lyrics have captivated audiences all over the world. If you’re a fan of Conan Gray or Lauv, you especially won’t want to miss out on Mad Tsai’s music. His addictive pop songs are sure to have you singing along in no time. Watch “Lonely Dancers” by Conan Gray https://eqmusicblog.com/watch-lonely-dancers-by-conan-gray/ Mon, 12 Feb 2024 11:12:11 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=35953 With "Lonely Dancers", Conan Gray takes listeners on a sonic journey through synth-pop, referencing 80s music in a new way.

The post Watch “Lonely Dancers” by Conan Gray appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

You know, when Conan Gray takes on electro-pop. These tracks are always annoyingly very good ones. And with electro-pop being a music style he is prominently featuring in his new album era. Therefore, I am eager to listen to his latest link-up with the genre. Although, notably when learning the legendary producer Max Martin has co-produced much of the upcoming album “Found Heaven” along with the newly released track “Lonely Dancers.” It is safe to say, that with these elements in place. That Conan will doubtless have a massive hit on his hands.

Noticeably, the promising teaser clips that were released for “Lonely Dancer” hinted at an 80s synth-pop style. And so, when checking out the music video and eagerly pressing play. The gargantuan melodic synths reminiscent of Men Without Hats’ kookie hit “Safety Dance,” instantly had me smiling away,

Along with a fair share of the commenters on YouTube, the one outstanding instance that stopped me in my tracks, loudly exclaiming ‘what was that,!’ This was Connan’s spectacular switching from lower to upper vocal registers. Now, I seriously would love to witness this change-over live. One more thing to note. Pay close attention to the lyrics in the last verse. Especially, because – hint… shots are fired! Which I do not mind sharing left me dead and simultaneously laughing out aloud.

Listen on Apple Music

In the music video directed by Jason Lester, Connan portrays an unfortunate boyfriend who finds himself dumped after he inadvertently discovers his girl locked in a kiss with another guy. Hit by the realisation of what is happening and while fortuitously at the same time standing outside a club. He does what all jilted lovers would do in that situation. He flees inside the building, picks out a track on the jukebox (“Lonely Dancers“) and proceeds to sing and dance out this heartbreak. Seemingly, among a room inhabited with fellow lonely-hearted folks that are seemingly frozen-in-time.

I can foresee “Lonely Dancers” ending up my most-played Conan Gray track of all time.

The post Listen to “Rewritten” by Dan Aura appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

Here’s something cool and new out today from Dan Aura, a rising pop prince that I’ve been tracking for a while and whom is similarly making waves in the music industry. From his 2021 debut EP “Plastic” to his latest track “Rewritten“. Notably Dan demonstrates his ability to craft eclectic music that speaks to the heart. His soothing soundscape and dreamy vocals perfectly complement his emotive lyrics, which draw from his own experiences of love and heartbreak.

2022, saw the release of the vulnerable track “Living Room,” and now in 2024, he’s back with “Rewritten.” A seemingly reflective song that explores the “what ifs” of a past relationship. But also a powerful track that might make us reflect on our own past relationships wondering what could have been.

Rewritten” is the latest track that you can’t afford to miss. Produced and co-written by SAKIMA. (The genius behind the platinum-certified hit “You” by Regard featuring Troye Sivan and Tate McRae). This new song is a perfect blend of emotionally charged lyrics and irresistible pop hooks that will leave you hooked from the first listen.

Listen on Apple Music

However, what’s even more impressive, is that Dan doesn’t appear bothered by the fact, when people are comparing his music with that of established pop acts, such as Troye Sivan or Conan Gray. Furthermore, whereas some new artists may get uncomfortable with comparisons to others. On the positive side, Dan, on the other hand seems to embrace it. Likewise, I consider this because he knows that his music is unique in its own right. And that above all, he’s confident in his abilities as an artist. In my view, moreover, he similarly embraces the comparison as a compliment to his talent. Either way, it’s a good sign that he’s not afraid to stand out and be himself in the music industry.

Infact, Dan’s return with the emotively powerful “Rewritten” is of such brilliance that he just elbowed his way to the front of the year’s ‘pop guys to watch’ queue.

I shall not be engaging in a lengthy discussion of why established music acts are criticized by their labels for failing to embrace TikTok. (You know what I am making reference to?) Let me not go here, it is not OK, alright. However, when scouting new music talent, the platform is coming up with the goods. By presenting acts that already have a substantial fan following. South African musician and songwriter Will Linley took to the platform in 2020. He arrived with a specific mission in mind. His goal is to challenge the music industry norms and claim a viral song as a young independent overseas artist.

After garnering 11.4M+ global streams and over a million YouTube views. Additionally, he has racked up 5 Million TikTok views, plus has had his debut release “miss me (when you’re gone)” used more than 5K times on TikTok. “wrong time,” the follow-up single, mustered a sizable response also. I consider Will is doing very well for himself.

Listen on Apple Music

There is no magic formula to Will’s success thus far. It is merely that the lyrics are relatable to others and form the all-important connection between music artists and listeners. Although obviously, it does help that these tracks are as contagious as a dose of flu. His style is a mix of both Lauv and JORDY. Earworm melodies with songwriting and lyrical narratives at front and centre.

I don’t wanna be yours“, his third track, just came out. It is the song you might play to one of your friends if they suddenly start coming on strong to you, and you don’t feel the same way. With a verse and a chorus down of “i don’t wanna be yours,” they will soon know they are in the friend zone.

I can see the appeal Will Linley has. He’s hip with what is on-trend at the moment. He just needs to come out with more of these original lyrics. The way things are going, he’s gonna strike a chord and soon. When he achieves this new peak, he’ll be well on his way to securing chart domination. His name will be shining brightly up there, among the Lauv’s and Conan Gray’s (eventually). There is no doubt in my mind.

The post Watch “Your Love” by Mallrat appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

The Brisbane musician, rapper and producer Mallrat was recently confirmed as a support act on Conan Gray’s world tour. (The UK and Ireland, legs begin May 30th through June 9th 2022 – ticket info HERE). Immediately upon hearing the news, my first thought was to expect new music to follow from the bedroom pop producer soon. Mallrat’s new era begins with the track “Your Love.” A soft, dreamy song about, it seems, unrequited love. It is not the first time Mallrat (Grace Shaw) has visited this theme. The 23-year-old Australian previously tackled the topic in tracks like “Nobody’s Home” and “Groceries,” among her other offerings.

She is back on this grind with renewed sensitivity. “Introducing Mallrat 2.0,” she announced after “Your Love” launched. What can be said of Mallrat’s lyricism is that the beauty lies in being atypical. Through her charming and savvy penmanship. She sings about the everyday teenage and gen z struggles with unflinching honesty. Is it any wonder she endears the way she does?

Listen on Apple Music

It is evidently apparent on “Your Love” how much she has grown up since her break out efforts of 2016 and 17. I feel like we are seeing her confidence soar to an all-time high at the moment. Laid out explicitly not in the song lyrics of this latest track but in the liberating music video which supports the release. I certainly, deem the clip her most sensual.

Mallrat says. “I shot the “Your Love” video in Tasmania with my friends James Robinson (Director) and Amy Dellar (Cinematographer). My favourite shots are in the final scene – it was 1am, and we spontaneously decided to shoot on the football field. And then the sprinklers came on, and it was magic.”

Based on what I can see in the clip, Grace was experiencing this moment to the fullest.

The song is a pure pop delight. Tune in now.

Watch “Wrong Reasons” by Denis Coleman https://eqmusicblog.com/watch-wrong-reasons-by-denis-coleman/ Wed, 30 Jun 2021 11:07:58 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=30583 Cool vibes from rising pop sensation Denis Coleman. We detect a bit of Conan Gray and YUNGBLUD influence on the track "Wrong Reasons"...

The post Watch “Wrong Reasons” by Denis Coleman appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

]]>

I remember checking out a young pop artist named Denis Coleman a few years ago when the lad’s music career was in its infancy. Even at the time, he was one of the youngest burgeoning pop kids around. The US-born/ UK raised pop artist is now 18-years-old and, apart from being slightly older, Denis continues making positive strides in the music industry. One worry I have with all young boy popstars is, having a tendency of just wanting to be like Justin Bieber. (I understand the aspiration because everyone looks up to someone.) It is also good that Denis has begun thinking outside of this box. And with the latest track, “Wrong Reasons“, concentrates on growing his artistry and sound.

Bieber vibes, be gone. The way to get me very interested in Denis Coleman is switching up instead with some cool Conan Gray and YUNGBLUD influences. As is what has happened on “Wrong Reasons“. A pulsing banger fired up by a swaying rhythm and a widescreen pop sound. This is now the kind of track I would expect of a bright emerging talent wanting to catch a break on the pop scene.

Listen on Apple Music

Denis explains…

“I’ve certainly felt the need for wild escapism – and sometimes, we need “someone” in order to experience it. “Wrong Reasons” focuses on that “someone”. The track “is a cry for colour in a monochromatic world. A twisted love letter not just to romance, but to the beautiful risk we call life”.

You might think, those are some pretty profound words coming from an 18-year-old. They are that but also be aware, at 15 years of age Denis became a brand ambassador for the mental health charity, Power of Musik. He is both clued-up and grounded and very mindful about wellbeing. He is probably more emotionally equipped than most newbies starting out in the music business. How refreshing. But this is not the end of the list of Denis’ many good qualities and talents. He also directed the very, good “Wrong Reasons” music video.

I feel I could go on and on, but know this, Denis Coleman is an emerging artist worth keeping an eye on.

Are we finally emerging from Groundhog season? Like me, do you feel as though each and every day of 2021 thus far has had the feeling as though a mysterious force keeps hitting the repeat button? UK Lockdown #3 has been a real stinger, hasn’t it? So you, therefore, might need a reminder of what new music went down in January and February?… We thought as much! So we’ve pulled our finger out and compiled the new March 2021 edition of our Spotify playlist “This Beat Is Poptronik.” Want to know more?… we’re only too happy to oblige…

MARCH 2021

Who is featured?

This week the 78th Golden Globe Awards took place. The awards recognizing excellence in film, both American and international, and American television. We couldn’t help but notice Sia had been nominated for the Best motion picture – musical or comedy award for her movie “Music” when we were thumbing through the noms. (We cover (Raj covers) film reviews as well. If you hadn’t noticed.) What can we say, other than Sia was robbed by “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.” So we’ve taken it upon ourselves to crown Sia queen of the March 2021 “This Beat Is Poptronik” playlist. Bagging the top spot with “Together” a song brimming with positivity and hope.

With a melody as slinky smooth as buttercream and just as sweet. Newcomer Jack Newsome has two playlist placements. Start with his latest jam “Arms.” “The Year The World Stood Still” will help you get another feel of his artistry. A potent singer-songwriter force, we have a very good feeling about.

We have never heard the Billy Idol track “Eyes Without a Face” sound so chill, but we are in rapture with the new Poolside remix. The blissed-out production is totally a new flavour to behold.

Long live Baby Queen! I’m pretty sure “Raw Thoughts” is my most streamed track of 2021, already. No coincidence then, Bella Latham has made the playlist twice. With her lyrics, she, is so, brilliant and being hugely relevant at the same time. Surely, “These Drugs” is as deep as it gets. It is so raw.

Sound On. “Bad Tattoo” from HYYTS is dreamy delicious, electro-pop teamed with, an intelligent social commentary that takes you on a journey.

Don’t miss gems from Allie X, Sam Feldt and Kesha, Nick Jonas, London Grammar, Greyson Chance and Conan Gray

Who you should have on your radar:

Sweden’s flyckt shares innovative track “Love Is Overrated.” Arresting soundscapes, palette cleansing and very addictive.

The pop is strong on “Champagne Butterflies” from Ireland’s Wild Youth. Irridescent, addictive indie-pop met with synth grooves.

Drink up the summer vibes. Alfie Templeman makes us aware he’s the hottest new indie-pop talent to watch with brilliantly good “Everybody’s Gonna Love Somebody.”

DISCOVER rising electro-pop innovator Leif Coffield who will revitalise your senses with mesmerising, boundary-pushing track “Say My Name.”

A gem. Drew Sycamore – “45 Fahrenheit Girl” a little, reminiscent of Miley Cyrus. Deserves to be a Europop smash. Pop with an electronic heartbeat.

Digitized, glitchy sound. Hyper-pop stylings, similar to Charli XCX, A.G. Cook & SOPHIE. If “Soda Pop” indicates how Apollo Monroe does, exciting & edgy. We hope there’s more similarly buzzy, forward-thinking music ready to launch.

Please DO go and explore the March 2021 playlist and discover a new favourite track and/or artist for yourself. (While you’re sitting on a bench with a friend having a takeaway coffee.) Stayed tuned. Check back for more “This Beat Is Poptronik” news and an updated playlist sometime soon.

With all things considered Conan Gray had a great 2020. The YouTuber made his mark as a pop force to be reckoned with, released debut album “Kid Krow” while the track “Heather” broke him onto the Official UK Top 40 singles chart. He also proved he’s a charismatic performer when recording live sessions for the Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch series. And although Conan’s brand of alt-pop hasn’t always hit the mark with me, I do appreciate and notice he’s got the potential to go the full mile with the moody millennial pop fans at least. I was surprised that a track so darkly intense as “Heather” sparked such a reaction that it spent thirteen weeks on the UK Chart. Although when Conan lightens up a bit or adds in electronic elements, I tend to be more intrigued with him. It is a good thing Conan has recognised you don’t come through lockdowns by feeling sad or moping around. You do have to let the sunshine into your mind a little. So he switched gears and wrote the bop “Overdrive” as his first single release of 2021.

Listen on Apple Music

He describes the new single’s message of optimistic escapism,

“I wrote “Overdrive” to escape reality. I’ve spent the entire past year moping around alone in my house, I wanted to make something to get me to dance around my house. Something to belt into the showerhead and lose your worries to. Every time I turned it on to tweak production or change lyrics, I’d always just end up singing along and forgetting why I was so stressed— which is exactly what I hope this song is for the people who listen. Just a moment of reckless abandon and catharsis in a world filled with inhibition.”

What is Conan doing to us with this music video? Reminding us what life was like when we could hang out and shoot the breeze without a second thought? Spoiler alert, I heard on the news today, those times are coming back. Woohoo. Maybe Conan perfectly timed the “Overdrive” track and video releases after all.
