It’s quite unusual for Sean Smith to keep us waiting all summer without releasing a fresh dance-pop track. However, this year he’s breaking the mould by getting ahead of the season. Just as we prepare to pack our sunscreen and flip-flops for our summer getaways, the former Same Difference singer gifts us with the empowering anthem “Feel This Love.” In a time when current events weigh heavily on our hearts, this notably inclusive song feels incredibly timely. Above all infusing us with an uplifting and joyous energy that’s sure to resonate with listeners everywhere.

What I truly admire about this track is its universally relatable narrative. The deliberate absence of gender references allows the lyricism to maintain a beautifully ambiguous quality. Thus inviting anyone, regardless of their background, to see themselves in the story being told. This song is not just a collection of sweet melodies. It’s a heartfelt journey through the intoxicating experience of love. That artfully captures the blissful, euphoric feeling of being head over heels. Moreover, the evocative imagery and emotional depth in the lyrics create a connection that resonates in an instant.

Of the track Sean adds…

Feel this Love” is a pure dopamine hit that is set around the feeling of excitement when meeting your special someone, knowing that it will be a significant relationship that will change the course of your destiny. So add it to your playlist, turn it up, get out in the sun and pour a G&T!”

In a bold departure from his previous releases, Sean has chosen to push forward without the customary wait for a remix package. This time, he unleashes a dynamic Matt Pop radio edit and an extended mix that surely will grab listeners from the very first note. These tracks perfectly capture the infectious vibe of a summertime anthem, designed to get everyone on their feet and dancing.

Adding to the excitement, remixes by Project K will be available on July 17th, promising a fresh take that complements Sean’s original sound. Additionally, fans can look forward to a compelling remix by Saha Delay, out on August 15th. With these releases, Sean is ready to elevate the summer music scene like never before. Don’t miss out on this electrifying musical journey!

It must be the many performances he’s been doing on cruise ships recently that inspired Sean Smith to release a track, like a summer banger in January. But equally, I similarly understand the thinking behind spreading some sunshine vibes at this time of year. Especially so when the weather has been so changeable lately. And if there was anyone I would rather unleash some summery grooves upon, undoubtedly, Sean Smith comes top of my list. In fact, I’ve noticed a pattern emerging, it was about this time last year when Sean released another euphoric anthem “Young Love.”

Also, it is very typical of Sean to write from a happy place. You see, in this instance, congratulations are in order. As Sean was recently married, and is of course, very loved-up. Therefore, it completely makes sense that he would share a glimpse at his happiest of experiences in the form of a song.

In the song lyrics, “If we’ve only got one more night together, don’t go so fast, let’s make it last… Lets make it feel like forever.”

Sean sings aloud as if in complete rapture. Not only does “Feels Like Forever” exhibit the attributes of a summer banger but also the traits spawned by an anthem indebted to love.

Spending a large chunk of the year navigating the Caribbean and such like, on luxury cruise ships, however, doesn’t come without presenting some difficulties. Especially so in light of recording tracks and promoting single releases. Undoubtedly, quality over quantity is key, and by adhering to this formula, Sean ensures that the music will make waves and stand out from the rest. Therefore, if he can manage to only unleash one or two songs a year. He does right when ensuring these are soaring, sunshine-pop bangers.

The single “Feels Like Forever” will also feature remixes by Matt Pop which will be released on the 12th of February.

Dear reader. Were you among the many lovely people who made it down to our EQ Music Live show on Wednesday? Those of you who joined us for our first showcase of the year may have noticed we had background music playing in between the artist sets from Ocean Tisdall, Sofi Vonn and TIN. What you were hearing just above the pleasant hum of socialising and chatter, was in fact, the first play anywhere of our This Beat Is Poptronik” Playlist – March 2023 Spotify playlist. Without bias. I thought the latest update we curated of the playlist sounded extra spectacular in this edition.

MARCH 2023 features…

Choosing a contender for the opening spot on our “This Beat Is Poptronik,” playlist was not an easy decision to make on this occasion. We went back and forth between P!NK and Samira multiple times before finally settling on the seriously catchy club-bound bomb “Like This, Like That“, the debut track by Samira. Therefore, “TRUSTFALL” by P!NK slipped to number two on the list. Yet it is still a bona fide electro-pop stomper, in our opinion.

Because of the twenty-four years pause between the old stuff and the latest songs. We had to mark the return of Everything But The Girl with both blissful new tracks “Nothing Left To Lose” and “Caution To The Wind.”

We have never hidden our lifelong adoration of Depeche Mode. Therefore it was always a given that our favourite electronic stalwarts would make it through the playlist selection process with their melancholy, lyrically articulate and compelling track “Ghosts Again” – the first single from the upcoming fifteenth studio album “Memento Mori.” which is released on March 24th.

A new remix of the Madonna track “Sorry” recently impacted the internet as well – did you hear? The reworking by BLOND:ISH, Eran Hersh and Darmon was unleashed to coincide with the seventeenth anniversary of the track’s original release – furthermore making good use of Madonna’s back catalogue to make her songs even more relevant for Generation Z. The eagle-eyed among you may have noted I did not write about this update of “Sorry” on the blog. We felt the new version perfectly suits the playlist better.

Whatever you do, you should not miss these gems from PG Roxette, Sean Smith, Le FIL, ZEE MACHINE and Lemar. It goes without saying that you should also be paying attention to Sofi Vonn, Ocean Tisdall and TIN and discover their excellent music as well.

Put these emerging artists on your radar:

JORDY remains a favourite emerging artist of mine, whom I have written about countless times on the blog. Most recently I featured the track “Story Of A Boy” and I am uber excited about his upcoming sophomore album, “BOY“. JORDY is a songwriter with a remarkable way of saying things exactly how they are, meaningful and with eloquence. Without a doubt, he is poised for stardom.

Of course, Samira is not the first star on stage or screen to embark on a music career, and neither will she be the last. Yet with a song as enormous and earworm-worthy as, “Like This, Like That,” speaking truthfully, this is a launch on a colossal scale. She has undeniable star quality, dare I say it. As early as we are into 2023, undoubtedly, it is one of the boldest and most exciting pop songs of this year so far.

There is no doubt Grace Gaustad is turning heads and could also be the next global pop sensation. Each and every track they share with us is proof of that. Grace has earned cosigns from Lady Gaga and Mick Jagger and they know better what makes a bona fide pop star, probably more than anyone.

Because of masses of pop potential and the cracking tune “Salvatore“. I sense Bentley Robles is on course to make big waves in 2023. At the very least, it would be a good idea that you have him on your radar as we do.

Our reason for curating our This Beat Is Poptronikplaylists is to help you discover a new favourite track and/or artist for yourself. Following us on Spotify is a good way of never missing out on updates in the first instance. If you like more info and insight about what you have listened to and discovered. Check back on the blog for more “This Beat Is Poptronik” news and an updated playlist sometime soon.

Listen to “Young Love” by Sean Smith https://eqmusicblog.com/listen-to-young-love-by-sean-smith/ Thu, 16 Feb 2023 12:20:39 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=33390 Just as the real sensations, the sense of euphoria in this Sean Smith track "Young Love" is indescribable, somewhat dizzying and intensified.

You are not mistaken reader. Above is a lovely photograph of Sean Smith, one time of the duo Same Difference (finalists on the X Factor in 2007). He does look somewhat different these days to how we remember him, but who doesn’t change a bit sixteen years on. Over the intervening years, I have noticed his solo music career take shape when covering the songs “Dirty Mirrors,” “Do or Die,” and “Fire” on the blog. As well as many single releases, he also released a debut album in 2020 entitled “Solo“.

A new era starts for the pop vocalist as he marks his return with the song “Young Love“. The track, written by Justin Busch & produced by Busch and Lenny B, takes Sean’s music further into a club, pop direction than he’s dared to go before. This narrative is uplifting and celebratory, which I find particularly pleasing. Especially when considering many songs written about love and relationships tend to concentrate less on happiness. Instead chose to zero in on themes of heartbreak and sadness.

Listen on Apple Music

It is my belief. The song “Young Love” is full of feel-good vibes, as Sean similarly wanted to give us a feeling of joy with its release. Also, in choosing to hone in with a narrative that explicitly focuses on evoking the intense experience of teenage love. Since when you are a teenager in love, this love is everything. He allows listeners to experience or revisit these butterfly feelings through the power of song. Just like the real sensations, the sense of euphoria in this track is indescribable, somewhat dizzying and intensified.

It is not unusual to find Sean performing at festivals. Therefore, it is necessary that he has a song as electrifying and emboldened as “Young Love,” in his repertoire to energize any crowd.

As always, Sean Smith continues to impress with quality tunes. In my parting words, I say to Sean keep the gems coming!

The single “Young Love” will also feature remixes by Matt Pop which will release on the 27th of March.

Listen to “Dirty Mirrors” by Ben Davidson and Sean Smith https://eqmusicblog.com/listen-dirty-mirrors-ben-davidson-sean-smith/ Thu, 07 Nov 2019 08:55:04 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=27149 Energised pop & a plethora of dazzling electronic beats. Ben Davidson and Sean Smith give a full measure of both on their effervescing track "Dirty Mirrors"

I first met Ben Davidson through his super, positive song “The Chain” and was at once left really, impressed by his powerful, dynamic voice. Since releasing his debut album “No One Knows” last year. I have held out hope, that at some point, the track “Dirty Mirrors” from the long-player would be up for consideration as a single release. The wait is over. The opportunity for the track to shine under its own spotlight has arrived. And, the release comes, with a lovely, package of remixes as well. Whichever way I am listening to this track, be it through “The Matt Pop” mix and extended mix, “The TMAC” remix, or the original edit. I am greeted with energised pop flavours, and a plethora of dazzling electronic beats made ready to storm the dancefloor.

I have spoken about the extra bonuses which come with this release. What I have failed to mention as yet is, that we also have the added bonus of Sean Smith (formerly, of the duo Same Difference) dueting on the track. As far as I can make out, the song speaks of staying strong and coming through the bad times, while being safe in the knowledge that we make our own happiness, anyways.

I really like how Ben and Sean’s voices work in complement to one another. As my ears are treated to some, simply, peachy, harmonising. I am also hearing news, Ben will be starting work on his sophomore album pretty soon. To be honest, I can’t think of a better way of rounding off the “No One Knows” album campaign than on an upbeat note, with “Dirty Mirrors“. As not only is it a fitting example of Ben’s vocal prowess but amplifies his talent as an exciting performer, as well.

Listen to “Do or Die” by Sean Smith https://eqmusicblog.com/listen-die-sean-smith/ Mon, 04 Mar 2019 10:59:12 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=26165 Sean Smith is more discerning about his craft these days. Even new single "Do Or Die" has a provocative title which coincides with his newfound moody image.

It’s true Sean Smith is looking and sounding a whole lot different to that of his former days as one half of sibling duo Same Difference. Since going solo in the past three years, he’s undergone quite a transformation. The singer has moved on from the sugary bubblegum appealing tracks made with sister Sarah, during their endearing spell as Same Difference. Sean is a tad more discerning and serious about his craft these days. Even the latest single “Do Or Die” has a provocative title which suitably coincides with his newfound mean and moody image.

The singer’s previous single “Fire” definitely got us hot under our collars when it was released in 2017. The track affirmed that he had broken out of the teen pop niche. Although, he has kept us waiting, a short while for its follow-up. The arrival of “Do or Die” further reveals his intent to move forward, showing us more depth and tonality going into his vocal. His voice is now rounding out nicely and appears to be developing in a symbiotic alignment with his clearly worked on biceps and buns of steel, boosted body shape.

Some of us are born thrill seekers but as we get older, the exhilaration of living in the moment gets all the more, sweeter. Some risks are worth taking more than others. The inner compass of the soul and judgement are everything. I believe this is what Sean is endeavouring to get across in this song. Whatever. His vocal is assured and committed to the cause, that we hear him out. It’s a rally for camaraderie and a release for adrenaline pumped desires. A steady deep groove and an effective rhythm join everything to make this track a dance floor filler. Undeniably, an admirable effort from someone continually honing their craft.

When Sean Smith first popped up on our TV screens as one half of the duo Same Difference on the fourth series of X Factor UK in 2007, I guess, it was expected, on the back of the public’s imagination, the likeable siblings would at least achieve a hit or two. Back then, it probably never occurred to the majority of us that the show would still be running over a decade later and subsequently, we would be talking about contestants from the early series some years further on. But, here we are doing just that because Sean’s new single “Fire” has just been released and it’s pretty good.

The easiest way for Sean to launch a solo career might have been to go on The Voice UK, rather than this he’s signed up and recording with British independent label Energise Records. “Fire” is Sean’s third release on the label but, I feel he’s only been getting into his stride until the song “Fire” came along. Sean has undergone a sleek image overhaul which also extends through the music. The style he’s going for is electronic pop, stirred with bouncing beats on the song. It’s, sweet and classy, and Sean’s vocals shine through the synth-heavy production achieving a new cool rating for the former teen pop singer.

While a fair few artists make half-hearted attempts to revive their post-reality show careers, Sean is thoughtfully plotting his comeback one track at a time and evolving with a notch more credibility on every release. The way I see it if there is room for Steps to make a comeback there’s a market for Sean to aim for now he’s turned away from the squeaky-clean image and wholesome sound that was Same Difference, it looks like he’ll achieve it. Sean has broken out of the teen niche. You got to agree he’s looking pretty hot these days!?
