The new Robert DeLong track “Somebody Watching Me” is absolutely captivating! It’s a testament to this genre-defying artist’s unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of electronica and tech. Fifteen years after his groundbreaking debut with “Global Concepts,” DeLong continues to set the standard in his field. In an exciting move, he recently released the deluxe edition of his 2024 album “PLAYLIST of DOOM,” almost entirely crafted in the freedom of his home studio—free from label pressures, A&R restrictions, and outside producers. This deluxe edition, “PLAYLIST of DOOM: After DARK,” chiefly reveals DeLong at his most authentic and adventurous, showcasing a rawness and creativity that feels truly groundbreaking.

This is not to suggest that Robert DeLong creates in isolation from his influences and inspirations. On the contrary, his artistic vision is driven by a relentless pursuit of creativity in every aspect of life. Furthermore, as an artist with a proven track record of longevity, he confidently ventures into experimental realms without hesitation. Collaborating with frequent partner DEANE on “Somebody Watching Me” allows DeLong to boldly traverse the landscape of pop legends, crafting a soundscape that feels equally familiar and strikingly authentic.

Listen on Apple Music

Speaking on “Somebody Watching Me“…

“This one is a reversal on the idea of paranoia, you feel like you’re being watched, but it’s because you can’t stop thinking about someone,” says DeLong. “It has this Daft Punk meets Michael Jackson vibe, but with a disaffected, cynical twist.”

Robert’s creative streak extends far beyond music; he masterfully navigates the world of visual art also. Likewise, his fusion of contemporary methods with classic techniques creates a rich tapestry of imagery that evokes the nostalgia of the 80s. The result overall, is an engaging visual experience that captivates the viewer and transports them to a different era.

In discussing the music visualiser, Delong shares, “I filmed and edited the video myself, then brought it into a studio and ran it through a CRT TV setup, my good friend at Terraform LA set up a camera to film it, and then I performed video FX adjustments live. It gave the whole thing this raw, analog energy that is un-replicable in digital.”

Robert DeLong’s music showcases his dynamic evolution, effortlessly blending electronic, indie, and pop elements. His ability to shapeshift across genres keeps him from settling in one place, making him a compelling force in today’s vibrant music landscape, rich with diverse sub-genres. Above all, this fearless experimentation is key to his continued success in the ever-evolving scene.

Listen to “Sister” by K. Flay https://eqmusicblog.com/listen-to-sister-by-k-flay/ Wed, 12 Jun 2019 09:16:01 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=26662 This Pride month celebrate, family and friendship. K. Flay's unifying track "Sister" is goals.

You might have noticed from her press photo K. Flay is in an extremely, happy mood. What you will not know is that coincidently so am I, after listening to “Sister” her latest release. The new track has certainly brought, a big smile to my face because it has a great message about sisterhood. But more especially because it is lit up with a buzzy electronic pop groove. I was kinda surprised by this track as it is quite different from anything I’ve heard by her before. She is better known as a hip hop and alternative artist, but maybe the tide started to turn towards bringing in a more prominent synth element when K. Flay recently guested on the Robert DeLong single “Favorite Color Is Blue“?

The Illinois born-and-raised artist speaks on what her interpretation of sisterhood is and her inspiration behind the song:

“Being a sister isn’t about gender or DNA. It’s about unselfconscious love. About saying I’M HERE, I LOVE YOU, IT’S OK TO BE YOURSELF, and hearing those words echoed back. Not because you asked for them, but because they’re true. Girls are sisters and boys are sisters. Dads are sisters to their sons. Mothers sisters to their mothers too.”

In essence, the message carried in the lyrics is about having our friends and families back always. The song evokes a voluminous wave of love and is definitely, food for thought during this month of Pride celebrations. As yet, the track acts as a standalone synth embraced effort lifted off K. Flay’s upcoming album “Solutions“. In more ways than before the long player promises to be a pretty potent mix of eclectic styles and genres.

Watch “Revolutionary” by Robert DeLong https://eqmusicblog.com/watch-revolutionary-robert-delong/ Wed, 10 Oct 2018 07:55:08 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=25581 Cue, lasers, lights, technology and special effects, Robert DeLong's video for epic, electronic-pop track "Revolutionary," has landed.

I have been waiting for Robert DeLong to come back with a video in support of his razor sharp single “Revolutionary” released this summer. The musician has been feeding his online followers with the tiniest of teaser clips from the shoot. These BTS snippets certainly gave the impression, the end result would include a substantial amount of, special effects content. Chiefly, an array of lasers, lights and a variety of tech pads and devices.

First premiered exclusively with Apple Music, the clip has now reached the more public domains of YouTube/Vevo. Thus enabling many more of us to nerd out with its spark of creative energy. Set in the near future the clip trails Robert jumping a high-security fence of an international satellite communications centre. His hoodie cloaked figure sneaks his way into the compound, dodging past CCTV cameras with panther-like agility. He then gains entry to a room decorated in a pristine shade of icy white, a testing laboratory of some kind. He reaches out to a small dish which is placed on a workbench, picks up a solitary contact lens on his outstretched fingertip. Fits it into his, right-eye. Where after doing so, Robert gains control of some, pretty nifty abilities which can and will happen at the blink of his eye.

My favourite scene in this video is where we see Robert playing a laser beam harp. The padded control paddle we see him using, kinda looks like a fly swatter, if you ask me. Yeah, the electronic pop realm is a place of contrasts where we have Imogen Heap creating electronic masterpieces with her elegant Mi.Mu gloves. Yet, where we also have Robert DeLong lobbing at laser beams with a sturdy paddle. Boys and their toys! Who am I kidding I’d love to get my mitts on either of these extraordinary pieces of kit if even for the briefest of minutes.

I can vividly remember being introduced to the music of Robert DeLong for the first time through the single “Global Concepts,” and how it stirred up a great feeling of fascination inside me. It’s a fascination which over time has only grown bigger, as Robert continues to creatively, flip electronics and pop into a style more pleasingly often than not of his own making. I’ve never doubted my devotion to Robert’s music. Although I did become worried for a bit by the recent arrival of “My Favorite Color Is Blue” with K. Flay, as I really, couldn’t get into the almost eerie techno rave vibe of the song. I’m much more at peace, and happy with the follow-up release “Revolutionary.” It suits my kind of prefered taste in electronic-pop, rather than the shed-load of future “R’n’B toned efforts which the genre is seriously drowning in.

You need to listen to the lyrics of this song since the tech god of electronic wizardry is taking a swipe (albeit tongue-in-cheek) at how technology plays a big part in our lives and it isn’t always for the greater good. I’m sure I don’t have to spell it out, everything we share online is under some level of scrutiny, in somebody else’s opinion. It’s just a fact of life that it happens, and of course, there is this fakery, deception which exists that we have to be acutely, mindful of at all times. It is a minefield, isn’t it?

We can really tell Robert has a wealth of recording under his belt, the production on this track is far superior, to his much loved early works. If I’m being truthfully honest, I do kinda miss the edgy as fuck raw spirit he first came out with though. Perhaps, it is on this occasion the boundary-pushing is manifesting through the razor-sharp lyrics instead. Whatever! Robert DeLong’s inimitable approach to indie dance is one which I am unequivocally here for. I won’t be able to say, I can die happy until I get myself to one of his shows. That’s how much his music means to me.

It’s not a bad time to be breaking out as a one-man-made-band right now. Infact, it feels almost as a growing trend among modern day multi-instrumentalist’s to forego the route of a session musician and really strike out as multi-skilled music making machines. Something that high profile acts such as Robert DeLong and Jack Garratt have proved that rather than been seen as a niche profession, honours to their advantage roll in with praises of success wherever they venture to perform.

Much like newcomer Youngr who has been building up considerable interest via his one-take live performance videos.

Youngr is the new project name of musician Dario Darnell, the same Dario Darnell who formed electronic pop duo Picture Book with brother Lorne a few years back (that I positively raved about as hard as I could). The same Dario Darnell, who is the son of August Darnell aka popular 80’s tropical pop gangster Kid Creole of Kid Creole and the Coconuts fame, no less!

I’ll let you in on this, Picture Book sowed the seeds of something very good indeed, even Madeon went so far to put a remix donk on them, they really were that good!

Although, that project appeared to go on hiatus, Lorne has since been releasing under the name of Lord High Owl and Dario as we now know goes under the new adpoted artist moniker of Youngr.

The past credentials I have already spoken about go before him, in giving some worthy insight into the emerging works of Youngr. Since the duo Picture Book, really had a tremendous knack of nailing hooks and fueling melody to the extent that their tunes became literally unescapable in their likability factor.

Something that as Youngr, Dario is keen to run with also, having recently dropped debut release “Out Of My System”.

Man this is so, so good! Not least of its rhythmic expression and overall catchiness that remains as suitably stellar as ever, but those lyrics have really come on some in leaps and bounds.

Never did a song born out of a break-up sound so freakingly, fantastically, good to my mind.

It’s official Dario Darnell’s new project Youngr, is more than predictably likely to spawn some very tidy pop morsels in the future, and I for one having been a fan of his former pop career, am pretty hungry in enthusiasm for them.

Much to our delight, we found out last minute that Robert Delong was going to play the TechCrunch party at SXSW Interactive 2016 this year so we made sure we were there.

We actually were kinda worried because we didn’t know the exact time Robert Delong was going on-stage and once we rocked up to the venue, we didn’t see his name on any of the line-up info for the party. But hey, that’s SXSW for you – sometimes you have to take some risks to get the sweet sweet reward…

Our reward was pretty much a front-row seat to Robert Delong doing a close to full set of his amazing one-man-band and stage show. Literally, as we walked into the Palm Door on 6th Street, he was going onstage and there just happened be a space at the front in the crowded venue for us to enjoy.

    We couldn’t quite believe it!

Last year, Robert Delong played the massive IFC Fairgrounds which was so rammed for us to truly enjoy the show, but this year, we couldn’t have asked for a better view! Robert said during the live show that he wasn’t going to do SXSW this year, but TechCrunch called him up last minute to perform for their Interactive party and so it happened.

Check out our footage of the show above. By far, this was one of our best experiences at SXSW this year so thank you to TechCrunch and Robert Delong for making this intimate show happen, days before the actual music festival began.

Playing Out by ‘Next Of Kin’ ft. RAFF : A track that brings quite the combination of electro and soul to kiss your ears sweeter than a Cadbury Egg. RAFF has recently caught the attention of writers over at Buzzfeed naming RAFF one of the 25 “Brilliant Musicians You Need To Discover NOW!”

‘Youth’ by Troye Sivan: The track brings a gentle electro pop melody to basking in the light of true love. Virtually coming out of nowhere the South African born artiste has taken over the world by storm.

‘Waste My Time’ by Girl Friend : The Manchester outfit changed up their crisp, indie lead synth-pop by teamed up with LVTHER to spread a little nu-disco hue of tropically filtered electro-funkiness on their new single. Look for their new EP this month!

Happy Days by Brooke Candy: A true pop chameleon has expanded her musical repertoire by venturing into our electronic pop world. The dark pop is quite the change to her hip-hop releases in the past. Brooke Candy proves with this release that she is able to cross genres and experiment. A true asset when it comes to delivering pop music.

‘Jealousy’ by Robert DeLong : The one man electro band has delivered an electro infused middle finger to the jealous lover in this upbeat track. The upbeat melody delivers a feeling of strength not having to put up with someone’s lies.

RobertDeLongJealousy is maybe the most powerful emotion of the human mind. A little bit of jealousy can cause us to do some of the dumbest things we will for sure regret at a later time. It will also make a relationship turn into complete horror. From the eyes of the one man dance pop band, Robert DeLong, he is confronting the issue ruining the love in his life with his latest single Jealousy off the album In the Cards.

It’s a tough emotion to face. It’s a feeling that encompasses a combination of mostly unfounded anger and fear. When someone gets tangled in a jealous rage it can ruin some of the best moments in life with the ones you love. Instead of wallowing in sadness dealing with a jealous partner, Robert DeLong gives us a melodic tale of what it’s like to escape it with an electropop infused middle finger. Through the lyrics, you’re driven into a feeling that you don’t have to put up with someone’s lies that are spilled so much it becomes the partner’s truth.

With the heavy beat there is an angry element that really enhances the feeling of being fed up with the crap. Then the track is uplifted with the rock infused synths that bring a breath of freedom with being able to escape.

With this tantalizing little treat of a single to hit our ears prior to the announcement of Robert DeLong’s upcoming tour. We’ll try not to get Jealous of you escaping to see him live!

Holla all electronica freaks like us, the time is here to paint up your peachy skin with neon brite tribal art and rattle your game controllers in the air. As in amongst his numerous live performances to date, including an immensely well received SXSW showcase experience as attended by our founder Raj. Inventive electronic pioneer extraordinaire Robert DeLong has found time to rustle up some new material to temptingly, stimulate and invigorate our favourite hallowed genre of music making. In going forwards into his sophomore album campaign, revealed today as titled “In The Cards”.

Notably if there was any performance styled video that I’d be uberly so keen to see, it would totally be an up close gander at the master hands of Robert DeLong at work depressing the buttons of genius and flicking the switches of circuitry creativity that to us he is so beguiling the rad man of.

As luck would have it, as the news of the album arrives, it has lead directly into the album’s initial impact track of “Don’t Wait Up” and exhilaratingly for us, continues DeLong’s trend apace in delivering riveting pieces of electronica that leave us, quite enthralled to the max of all his creative ingenuity. From behind the controls of his electronic gadget amassed orchestra to the outwards immersive visual concept that Robert brings.

And do you know what I am already sending out a wish list to the universe for? ………. Some UK tour dates if you please Mr DeLong. I just HAVE to witness the creativity happening before my very own eyes, for myself. Gee I once at a concert and saw quite a well-respected pop singing musician, create a song from scratch, recording on spot & layering these samples via loop foot pedal and it blew my tiny mind to say the least. So to see Robert DeLong at work and performance, well I’d be rendered speechless at the wonder of it all, that’s as much I know!

If you were to ask us are we excited by the prospect of what this new album might bring? The answer would be a resounding YES on all accounts!

So what are you waiting for! The “In The Cards” album pre-order has landed and we can instantly get our itchy palms on “Don’t Wait Up”.
