Merely noticing this girlie collaboration on paper was enough to have me salivating for the “ATTENTION!” release day. After the summer of Kylie followed by the summer of Charli XCX, the successor the summer of Kesha is now undoubtedly in full swing. I’ll admit to not being fully switched on into Kesha mode until the recent arrival of “Boy Crazy“. And while it took me a little longer than most to jump back on the Kesha train, she had me at the mention of boys and certainly has me gripped even tighter, bringing on her upcoming “TiTS OUT” tour openers Slayyyter and Rose Gray. I mean, it’s just such a cool idea but also embodies the essence of love and connection Kesha is striving for in the new music and tour in equal measure.

It’s clear that the July 4th (Independence Day) release of the album – “.(PERIOD)” is not just a celebration; it’s a strategic move by Kesha to grab the spotlight with her “ATTENTION!” initiative. Equally exciting is the introduction of SMASH, a groundbreaking community platform designed for creators to connect, collaborate, and hire one another on their own terms. This innovative platform was co-founded by CEO Kesha Sebert, CTO Alan Cannistraro, and COO Lagan Sebert, showcasing a dynamic new era for creativity and collaboration.

Listen on Apple Music

Do I have your attention?, the track begins as Kesha roles out a list of evocative clickbait-style statements. Similarly followed by Slayyyter and Rose Gray each taking over a verse delivered in an introductory manner.

“Can I have your attention? Yeah maybe I should mention, I’m in love with my reflection.”

“Tits out riding with the windows down. They’re playin me on the radio right now. My name coming outta all y’all’s mouths. Is it even a question? Do I have your attention?”

It does seem a bit odd that the collaboration isn’t listed on the “.(PERIOD)” album track list, but let’s not forget there’s always a chance for a deluxe edition! We can absolutely count on these artists to light up the stage during the tour with an unforgettable performance of this hit! Plus, it’s exciting to see Slayyyter and Rose Gray following in Tom Aspaul‘s footsteps as he recently opened for Kesha’s UK shows. Each of them is making waves as independent artists and gaining well-deserved recognition!

I’ve been overwhelmed by the fantastic new album releases lately. And with the bank holiday weekend here, it’s the perfect opportunity to share an exciting album review. Whether you’re gearing up for a lively BBQ, hitting the road for an adventure, or just lounging at home with some snacks and a flavoursome beverage. You’ll doubtless want to discover fresh music to elevate your experience. With this in mind, not long ago, I teased that pop sensation Tom Aspaul was getting ready to unveil his third album. Well, the moment has finally arrived. Tom’s highly anticipated album “Cabin Fever” is out now, and it’s a must-listen!

Sharing some thoughts in December 2024 on the first single release “Sauna/Cabin,” I noted… “With an undeniable spark ignited, Tom vividly relives the adventures of his mind-altering Swedish encounter, captivating listeners and leaving them wanting more“.

Continuing on, Tom elaborates…

“I went to Sweden to relax post-tour and ended up staying awake for two days almost losing my mind. It was not conducive to relaxation at all. I would like to go on record saying I would never recommend LSD or any type of drug, we were very stupid to think we had any sort of control. However, we got through it together and it spawned an album. Over the last 18 months, I’ve been reliving every second of it with Gil Lewis (producer/songwriter) and I’m so thrilled (and relieved) to share this crazy experience”.

When listening to “Cabin Fever” for the first time, it’s impossible not to notice the dramatic shift in musical direction. Coupled with the meticulous refinement of pop stylings throughout the album. Producer Gil Lewis employs an impressive array of production techniques. Thus creating innovative soundscapes that merge seamlessly with Tom’s lush, pop-rich vocals. This blend not only elevates the overall audio experience but also highlights Tom’s profound lyrical artistry with striking authenticity and emotional depth. In comparison to the vibrant disco and dance-pop aesthetics of his earlier albums, “Black Country Disco” and “Life In Plastic“. “Cabin Fever” offers a more introspective and mature perspective. Above all inviting listeners to engage with the themes of personal growth and transformation embedded in each track.

The album’s focus singles, “Drama” and “That Girl,” powerfully embody a mature musical and deeply confessional lyrical perspective. “Drama,” for example, delves into introspection and profound soul-searching. Yet Tom skillfully juxtaposes this heavy emotional weight with a self-directed music video featuring an outfit evocative of a Shakespearean bard. “The drama has defined me, who am I reminded of?” he sings, inviting us to ponder on this thought-provoking dialogue.

Another standout moment of musical diversity arises in “That Girl,” a collaboration with Gil Lewis and Stefan Storm of The Sound of Arrows. This track poignantly captures the longing for a carefree existence, as Tom reflects on the longing and isolation experienced as a gay man. He laments, “I never ever got affection from the guys, no attention from anyone, ooh I didn’t have a chance, just a fear of love and rejection. Another lonely young queer in a small town looking for a change to come (But it never did).” The accompanying visualizer is a breathtaking display of animated psychedelia. The clip is crafted by Jill Chrisp of Studio Shuggi, enhancing the song’s emotional impact and allure. But let me tell you, a display of phenomenal artistry carries all the way through this project.

Personal and intense at times. Ultimately, thought-provoking and revealing, “Cabin Fever” is stellar work. Essential listening.

As I concentrate on supporting and championing new music throughout the year. Notably, these last two years I have missed not seeing the solo work of Tom Aspaul appear in my Spotify Wrapped Top Ten. However, there is always next year to look forward to. Especially so, because Tom’s third album “Cabin Fever” is due early summer 2025. Recently he dropped the title track as the first teaser of this upcoming body-of-work. Although noting, a music video was on the way, I obviously waited until this dropped since Tom’s music videos are always way cool to watch.

Cabin Fever” is an immersive concept album inspired by Tom’s unforgettable trip to Sweden during a Midsommar weekend. What began as a simple getaway soon spiralled into an extraordinary adventure after he indulged in some hallucinogenics. This album masterfully captures the exhilarating and somewhat bewildering experiences that arose from this wild adventure. Each track serves as a vivid episode, painting the surreal journey of a day where the effects of substances take hold. Reality begins to unravel, and the boundaries between perception and the fantastical merge into an unforgettable soundscape.

Listen on Apple Music

The music video for the title track, brilliantly directed by Noam Gottlieb-Zeiss and Tom Aspaul, presents a captivating journey that unfolds when he is invited into a sauna. Even in his surreal, trippy state, the experience becomes intensely hot and steamy, drawing viewers into its allure. To enhance the experience, the video also introduces a prelude track titled “Sauna,” which artfully blends with the single edit of “Cabin Fever.” Furthermore, making this an unforgettable auditory and visual experience.

Having highlighted Tom Aspaul’s work multiple times on the blog. Moreover, it’s clear that his writing stems from a deeply authentic and relatable standpoint. He constructs narratives that resonate because they’re rooted in real experiences. Thus, it’s no surprise that his “Cabin Fever” release features such provocative lyricism.

“I see the devil and we lock eyes. Somewhere between 1, 2, 3, 10 guys”… – “Everybody wants a piece, wants a piece of me. They got their eyes on the prize like its BCD. I drop the towel and I’m looking disrespectfully. C-cabin fever, cabin fever got the best of me.

With an undeniable spark ignited, Tom vividly relives the adventures of his mind-altering Swedish encounter, captivating listeners and leaving them wanting more.

Get ready to mark your calendars for the exciting summer of 2025! Not only will he be celebrating the release of this highly anticipated album. We can also look forward to Tom’s electrifying performance at the renowned Mighty Hoopla festival. Don’t miss out on this chance to experience it all!

Watch “Girlfriend” by Omar Rudberg https://eqmusicblog.com/watch-girlfriend-by-omar-rudberg/ Fri, 25 Oct 2024 09:29:54 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=37719 "Girlfriend," is the last track lifted from his "Every Night Fantasy" EP, and the most notable sign Omar Rudberg is on the cusp of an international breakthrough...

The post Watch “Girlfriend” by Omar Rudberg appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

While watching who is bringing the heat in the Swedish music scene, actor and singer Omar Rudberg stands out. The former FO&O boy band member is a well-known presence in the Swedish music scene, as a solo artist. It is fair to say his role as Simon Eriksson in the Netflix series Young Royals, introduced him to the international stage. Moreover, where interest in the young performer has picked up greatly. Hence the growing attention around him has also meant his music releases have gained a wider audience. In fact, pop fans from London to Los Angeles can’t get enough of Omar’s Latin-infused style of pop and dreamy, smooth vocals. We know this because all dates on his recent debut headline tour SOLD OUT.

Omar sings both in Swedish and English although, his latest EP, “Every Night Fantasy,” is his first complete body of work solely in English. Notably, the EP offers an eclectic mix of eight tracks. Where Omar showcases his entire musical spectrum—from pulsing, danceable rhythms to deep emotional ballads. Additionally, among the new tracks is a Spanish version of ”Red Light”—a tribute to Omar’s Venezuelan roots and a reflection of his global ambitions.

Listen on Apple Music

However, the latest focus track “Girlfriend” sees Omar influenced stylistically by 90s boy band pop. Using a style notably, that is recognizably reminiscent of *NSYNC. Similarly, he echoes the 90s theme in an Adam Falk-directed music video, wherein a solo dance routine he flexes some pretty funky moves. As far as I am concerned, I would like to see a little more experimenting in this style. Although, I am confident, he will achieve the international breakthrough he seeks, soon.

The one London date on the tour, was the UK’s only chance as yet to check out Omar Rudberg live. However, all hope is not lost if you were not one of the lucky ones this time. Omar is among a host of artists who will perform at Mighty Hoopla 2025, including Allie X, Tom Aspaul, Tom Rasmussen, VINCINT and Bentley Robles.

Cool aesthetic. The sense of escape is on point

The post Watch “Let Them” (It’s All Love) by Tom Aspaul appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

FACT. The top spot on my personal Spotify Wrapped has gone to Tom Aspaul for two years in a row. The heartbreak disco-pop of his debut album “Black Country Disco” and “Black Country Discothèque” (the remix album) were constant music companions in my life, steering me through the gloomy days of lockdown. As such, “Black Country Disco” will never get old to me. Since he announced, the new era would begin on New Year’s Eve. I was eager to jump right into the new music when it dropped. As I watched Tom’s Instagram posts, I became intrigued by “Let Them” (It’s All Love). Even so, I held off from posting my thoughts until the video was released.

The first thing I noticed about the new track, it is brimming with Europop flavour. I felt sure Tom would reference Moldovan singer Natalia Gordienko’s Eurovision entry, “Sugar,” as an influence for the new sound. (He has shared his appreciation of the track extensively on his social media platforms). In line with the “It’s Fantastic” playlist, he curated for the “Life In Plastic” sophomore album – (that includes songs that inspired the upcoming album). Steps, Kylie, Adam Rickitt, Liberty X, Everything But The Girl and INNA, among others, helped shape the sound of his second album. I was startled not seeing Gordienko’s name on the line-up. (Check out the “It’s Fantastic” playlist HERE)

Listen on Apple Music

Not everything has changed in this era. Tom teams up with longtime collaborator Gil Lewis again for the release. Speaking with Gay Times, Tom said. “I’ve worked with Gil Lewis, who produced the first album, again, but every song is co-produced by me this time around. I’ve also collaborated with my wonderful friend MNEK on a couple of tracks.” (Read the full interview with Gay Times HERE)

As much as I enjoy the new direction of the music. It was the Sam Taylor-Edwards‘ music video I’ve been dying to watch. Clever, wardrobe styling from Aaron Francis Walker helps project the image we see of Tom encoded into a virtual reality version of himself in the clip. This styling is on point, and has such a cool, camp, gay aesthetic for a video game model. I cannot take my eyes of this video it is massively captivating.

The year has only just started, yet the video is one of my favourites of 2022, already. I love that it envelops me in a sense of escape. I am hopeful that Tom’s “Life In Plastic” era will bring me more opportunities to break free from reality. Certainly seems Tom is hinting at this direction with both the music and the video.

You may have noticed that over the New Year, we didn’t draw up a list of our favourite releases of 2020. Truthfully, we had list fatigue. I feel we have enough, lists, regulating our day to day lives, why be adding more to the pile. That is not to say, some releases stood out more than others. The debut album “Black Country Disco” from Tom Aspaul was one of my most played of the year according to, Spotify Wrapped. (Although, I didn’t NEED Spotify to tell me what I knew already.) If I am having, a day where I am struggling a bit. I listen to the heartbreak disco-pop of “Black Country Disco” it soon has me on the road to feeling like old myself again. I am so happy Tom is following the release up with remix album “Black Country Discothèque.” And that Tom has begun teasing the upcoming release with the track “The Program.” Where he teams up with San Francisco based funk phenomenon, Funk LeBlanc, and feature vocalist and songwriter Madeleine Wood.

Listen on Apple Music

The mood set by “The Program” is the 80s. There are not so subtle hints of the evergreen Giorgio Moroder, Phil Oakey track “Together In Electric Dreams,” wrapped around stylish funk disco beats. I already know, I am going to play this track, super lots. Because, of, the vibe being hot like a disco inferno.

It seems Gay Times has been given the full brief about the release. Their article drops more than a few, tantalizing, nuggets of info about what we can expect. If you’d like some spoilers, check the feature HERE.

Whereas under Tom’s guidance, we were cry-dancing at the “Black County Disco.” Because of “The Program” I am of the feeling, only happy dancing will be allowed at the “Black Country Discothèque.”

I wasn’t sure that we would be able to update the “This Beat Is Poptronik” playlist this month. The reason being, I spent half of September, (away from blogging) taking some much needed annual leave. There hasn’t been any shortage of electronic, pop, or indie music releases, though. Our inboxes have been stacked with press releases, submissions and new music tips, which I have been happy to power through. While sharing as many relevant tracks on the blog as I possibly could. I give myself a self-congratulatory pat on the back at turning the situation around, with posting up enough new music just in the nick of time to compile the October 2020 update after all.

OCTOBER 2020
Who is featured…?

Sazzie (“London Town”) and Matt J. Cardy (“Restart”) are both independent artists we have supported for many years on EQ. We are super happy to give Sazzie the opening slot for October 2020 with “London Town” because listening to her peppy pop tracks always brightens up our day.

Kylie, Sam Smith, Lady Gaga and New Order as you might have suspected have also made the grade.

This month, oldies but goodies come from PHIXX – (because when did we last have a good boy band to write about!) Kelly Osbourne (we were always more about watching “The Osbournes” than ever “Keeping Up With The Kardashians”) and Le sigh… Nick Kamen (no explanation needed.) If Nick was your man crush also, a box set “The Complete Collection” was recently released on Cherry Red Records. (We beat you to the checkout first!)

Who you should have on your radar:

I didn’t file ANY emerging artists posts through September, there was too much elsewhere to catch-up on. Instead, I had a lot of album previews sent over, and I only managed to review one on the blog. All MUST-listen albums in my opinion.

REVIEWEDPRIZM – “All Night” (title track appears on the playlist)

“Strangers/Lovers” by DAGNY (“It’s Only A Heartbreak” – features on the playlist.)

Must give a shout out to the brilliant Bright Light Bright Light album – “Fun City.” Regardless of NOT appearing on the playlist this month. (Bright Light Bright Light has been featured most other months – (see the playlist archive) Regrettably, the release happened whilst I was away.

The much anticipated Tom Aspaul album “Black Country Disco” arrived. I said it was “like a candy store of disco-pop treats, where every track is a favourite.” (“01902” has been playlisted)

Updates on tracks featured on this playlist:

The timely and heartfelt Isaac Dunbar track “miss america” is updated with a video

Mura Masa has remixed “GO FAST BABY” by RaissaCHARLI XCX fans will GO WILD for this mix

Please DO go and explore the October 2020 playlist and discover a new favourite track and/or artist for yourself.

We’ll update you again on “This Beat Is Poptronik” news sometime soon.

Returning from my holiday’s it was hard for me not to notice (but also feel happy about) the heaps of praise and glowing comments flooding my social media timeline for Tom Aspaul’s debut album “Black Country Disco.” The album which was released last week was one that I have been most eagerly awaiting also. During my 10 days away I’d purposely starved my ears of listening to music (as wanted to come back with my mind fully rested and with fresh ears.) Checking out “Black Country Disco” was my first priority. Turned out once I’d got the crucial first listen in, I couldn’t leave it there. That one first play became six plays in succession in no time at all. As someone who has never been the hugest album listener – this was a new milestone for me.

Listen on Apple Music

The current focus track from the release is “01902” (The telephone area code for the West Midlands.) A decadent choice of single, at five and a half minute’s length. While being Tom’s first production credit also. The funky disco song brings closure to picking, through the heartbreak which forms the central theme throughout the album. In a move, quite the opposite to the rest of the album, the track details a sexy encounter. Although not explicit, the steamy lyrics leave little to the imagination. In so saying, the album ends on a very, chipper note. At least in the lyrical sense. The whole “Black Country Disco” album package is like a candy store of disco-pop treats, where every track is a favourite. I urge you to give it a spin at your earliest convenience if you haven’t already. I am sure it will be an instant hit with you as it is with me.

Listen to “Tender” by Tom Aspaul https://eqmusicblog.com/listen-to-tender-by-tom-aspaul/ Thu, 02 Jul 2020 10:24:51 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=28588 Sharing slick disco grooves and emotion fuelled lyrics of "Tender," Tom Aspaul is about ready to make his mark with his debut album "Black Country Disco."

The post Listen to “Tender” by Tom Aspaul appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

]]>

It is nearly time to pull on our disco pants. The arrival of “Black Country Disco” the debut album from Tom Aspaul is imminent. We know so because Tom made us aware, on his social media. Stating, “Tender” the fourth and final single before my debut album “BLACK COUNTRY DISCO” is here. Are we ever in the mood for disco, as much as we are right now? You better believe it!

As we know from previous singles “Traces,” “Close 2 Me” and “W.M.” this album campaign has had Tom in his feels. Track by track he’s documented various stages of a break-up. He’s allowed us to see his vulnerable side and done so by sharing slick disco grooves. Nothing he’s unleashed this far compares with the emotion fuelled lyrics, he brings on “Tender.” Declaring “I don’t think that I could start again. You know it’s going to be a cold September. I don’t wanna show this heart again, the way you left it feels a little tender.” By the very cutting, heartbreak nature of the track, this really shouldn’t be a disco song. We see the word ‘tender’ mentioned and are fully expecting a pop ballad, and this is not what Tom has furnished us with at all. I would rather listen to a fizzing electronic-pop melody any day.

If you’re mid-week is need of a little spark, the “fired up” mix of the track should see you right.

The disco renaissance has really taken ahold this year. To be honest, it is the best thing to come out of 2020, for me, thus far. I do, however, recognise, that it has been mainly the ladies who have been bringing these vibes, back into our lives. Tom, here stands apart from the current trend makers in this respect. He is showing the guys how it’s done and gets major props from me for sticking with his vision.

If you are wondering when you might get your hands on the “Black Country Disco” album, Tom has said.

Applause! Finally, someone (i.e. Tom Aspaul) is challenging the system and being sensible. I hope more independent artists will see this, follow suit and drop their releases outside of Friday. Self-releasing artists, please take note.

A lot has happened since the last “This Beat Is Poptronik” update in March. As much as I hate to keep mentioning it. The wrath of COVID-19 and adjusting to life in lockdown, self-isolation or quarantine and observing social distancing when we venture out, has become a strange new norm. In light of everything which has been happening, we hope that our readers are staying healthy, safe, & sane! Despite the obvious adversities, it has been particularly heartening to see communities come together to support one another. The music industry especially, being an early adopter of finding new and innovative ways of keeping us all uplifted at this time. Livestream gigs and benefits have really, taken off. There are so many now that it is hard to keep up! The humble, playlist has become an even more important companion in these times.

Subscribing to the “This Beat Is Poptronik,” playlists means there is no excuse not to enjoy and support electronic, pop, and indie music, be it from established or newly, emerging artists. To make things even simpler, we have started up “This Beat Is Poptronik” 2020 Archive Playlist this month as well, which we will keep adding to (find it HERE)

The May edition of the playlist is now out, ready and waiting for you to download or stream, (whatever you prefer really) and pop into your ears.

Who is featured?…

Who could have predicted the opening spot would go to the Call Me Loop track “Downhill From Here“, huh? We couldn’t resist having little a joke. Nonetheless, the track is a pop-belter. Enjoy it much.

Blog favourites, Bright Light Bright Light, Sazzie, Tom Aspaul, SIRPAUL, REYNA, Alex Di Leo and Hannah Jane Lewis continued to show us what they do best.

Aluna (now solo) of AlunaGeorge stepped back into the pop arena. While Pet Shop Boys, Troye Sivan, Dua Lipa, Lennon Stella, Ava Max, HAIM and 5SOS threw more of their electrifying tracks into the ring.

Who you should have on your radar:

First up, from a voice that resonates with special magic. GRACEY who is currently enjoying her first official top 40 chart placing as the featured artist on the Kid 220 track “Don’t Need Love” – has changed the name of her lovely sad pop banger “Gone” to “Alone In My Room.” To reflect self-isolation and because Twitter told her too. She’s ace BTW.

From TikTok sensation to future-forward artist. Trevor Daniel embraces emotive pop sensibility head-on, on FINNEAS co-write and produced “Past Life.”

We are given a glimpse of Evie Irie’s spitfire personality on “Over Him” and definitely, have the appetite for more sassy pop songs from her.

We’ll be paying close attention to rising electronic producer pluko from now on because his track “used to” with Cassette Tapes is incredible electronic pop music.

Please DO go and explore the playlist and discover a new favourite track and/or artist for yourself.

We’ll update you again on “This Beat Is Poptronik” news next month.
