How is it possible that Moyka remains relatively unknown? Admitedly, this is a concept that truly baffles me. Especially, since 2019, she has been crafting and releasing music. Yet markedly her presence outside of a handful of European countries is still minimal, despite a brief launch in the U.S. Likewise, it’s hard to believe that her electrifying sound hasn’t captivated the attention of electronica aficionados or Nordic-pop lovers on a global scale. The truth is, people are genuinely missing out on something special. Therefore as an ardent fan of Moyka, I can’t stay silent about her remarkable talent. That’s the reason why I’m thrilled to share the news of her latest single “24/7,” which just dropped on Friday! Moreover, don’t sleep on this—her music deserves to be heard.

Moyka has just announced to her newsletter subscribers that she has become a fully independent artist. Above all I believe this change will be incredibly advantageous for her. For instance, this newfound freedom will allow her to release the music that she feels most passionate about. In the ever-evolving landscape of electronic music, where trends can swirl unpredictably, it’s essential for her to remain true to her artistic vision. Notably, by focusing on the darkly mesmerizing electronica that she excels in.

Listen on Apple Music

The first official release since her sophomore album “Movies, Cars & Heartbreak” dropped in 2023, “24/7” marks a powerful return for Moyka as she revisits the mesmerizing Royksopp-influenced soundscape from her early music. This track masterfully blends a rich electronic soundtrack with an enchanting style that captivates listeners from the very first note. It delves deep into the experience of invading someone’s thoughts, depicting the struggle to be free from lingering feelings. This fascination persists even as love turns sour, complicating the journey of moving on. Through this exploration, Moyka presents a compelling narrative that resonates with anyone who’s experienced the weight of obsessive longing.

Perhaps one day we will hear euphoric anthems that capture love’s glory from her. We can only hope she finds herself utterly captivated and pours those emotions into her music. Although, for the moment, it’s evidently the haunting, pulsating beats of electronic music intertwined with themes of heartbreak that dominate her soundscape.

As readers of EQ Music Blog are well aware, we have a particular liking for Nordic pop artists. A vibrant genre that has been the focal point of many features on our blog. From Sigrids electrifying energy to Dagnys catchy melodies, and s dynamic soundscapes to Moykas ethereal vocals. We’ve only scratched the surface of the exceptional talent emerging from this region. Our quest for discovering fresh, innovative voices continues. And I am excited to introduce you to a standout emerging artist: IVY.

Originally hailing from Norway and now based in London, IVY, formerly known as bby ivy, is embarking on an inspiring new chapter in her musical journey. Her latest release, “Let My Hair Down,” showcases a raw and unapologetically honest take on alt-pop, blending highly emotive lyrics with captivating production. This track not only reflects her personal growth but also resonates with listeners on a deeper level. Thus making it a must-listen for fans of genuine and relatable music.

Listen on Apple Music

IVY is not only developing a distinctive sound in the alt-pop genre. She is also setting herself apart from other artists in the Nordic pop scene with her vibrant and anthemic power-pop style. In her artistic journey, she has transitioned from her previously sweet and alluring vocal delivery, which resonated with DJs, producers, and live audiences during various collaborations in the electronic and club music space. Which her most recent collaboration with Tungevaag on the track “The Night” highlights. Additionally, the bold, sing-speak approach she employs in “Let My Hair Down” represents a dramatic change. Moreover, making IVY nearly unrecognizable compared to her earlier pop music endeavours. Yet, above all showcasing her ability to evolve as an artist.

“This era is about trusting my instincts—creatively, emotionally, and physically,” IVY shares. “I’m not overthinking it. I’m letting it be loud, sexy, and unapologetic.”

Above all, these are the captivating aesthetics that IVY similarly incorporates in the “Let My Hair Down” music video. The visuals are vibrant and dynamic, delivering an empowering attitude that exudes confidence and strength. It embodies the spirit of a fierce, independent woman who embraces her individuality, unapologetically seeking to express her freedom and joy as she indulges in a hot girl summer experience. Moreover, celebrating life on her own terms.

Don’t miss out on her compelling artistry—IVY is certainly one to watch in the ever-evolving landscape of pop music!

Among the early contenders, for Norway electrifying track "Oblivion" by Margaret Berger stands out.

Margaret Berger is an exceptionally talented electro-pop artist from Norway. Although, despite her success at Eurovision 2013, (where she came 4th with entry “I Feed You My Love“). Astonishingly, she appeared just once on EQ Music Blog, which is somewhat unforgiveable considering her stature. However, Margaret is back in the spotlight, thanks to her participation in the Melodi Grand Prix selection process for this year’s competition in Malmo Sweden. Her latest single “Oblivion” has already garnered a significant response. If you haven’t given her music a listen before, now is the perfect time to do so. Margaret’s unique sound is sure to captivate you and leave you wanting more.

It’s intriguing to ponder whether the Norwegians perceive Margaret’s involvement in the Melodi Grand Prix selection process in the same manner as the Swedes did with Scandipop queen Loreen‘s return last year. One could speculate that they are hoping for a victory that follows a similar formula to Loreen’s success. However, with KEiiNO also in the running with another supremely catchy offering in “Damdiggida“, the outcome is uncertain. Only time will reveal whether Margaret’s impressive track record and electrifying new song “Oblivion” will place her in the winner’s circle.

It’s early that I get swept up in the Eurovision excitement! What has me enthused about the track “Oblivion” in particular, is that it’s written by an incredible team of songwriters. An ensemble of songwriting minds that Includes Moyka – one of the most talented Norwegian electronic-pop acts around – alongside Anders Kjaer and Sivert Hagtvet Hjeltenes. With that kind of talent behind it. This is definitely one preliminary Eurovision entry you won’t want to miss!

Are you curious to find out if Margaret will represent Norway at Eurovision 2024? Don’t miss out on the action! The heats in the national final process start on Saturday 13th of January, with Margaret performing in semi-final one. Are you still on the lookout for some great new music (similarly, as I am) despite the festive releases and the end of the year winding down? Well, look no further! Moyka has just released a visual for her track “Lonely” from her most brilliant unskippable album “Movies, Cars & Heartbreak“. This is the fifth focus track from the album, and it’s no surprise why. So, don’t wait any longer, give “Lonely” some ear time now!

Moyka’s “Lonely” is a powerful track that speaks directly to the heartbreak that many of us have experienced. Through this song in particular, she explores the nuanced difference between loneliness and being alone, inviting us to reflect on our own emotions and experiences. By sharing her own struggle, Moyka creates a space for us to connect and find solace in the knowledge that we are not alone. And where Moyka muses…

“I know it’s for the better. To go back, become someone you barely know, you barely know ’cause I’d rather be all alone, than to be lonely, lonely, lonely with someone (with someone).”

Listen on Apple Music

Whereas the song narrative is rather profound, this time for the visualiser, director Sara Westergaard Karlsen joins Moyka with a simple but nonetheless, effective visual idea for the “Lonely” video clip. It’s just footage of Moyka in her thoughts wandering through beautiful Norwegian places. The cute streets and countryside of Stavanger, Jørpeland and Bergen. It’s a mesmerizing experience to watch the video and become lost in the breathtaking scenery.

“These cinematic shots show a heartbroken but free girl – realizing her worth, going around in her life creating her own movie, being the main character of her own life”. Moyka explains.

To put a finer point on it, as a fan of electronic pop above all else, the album “Movies, Cars & Heartbreak” rocks my world. Therefore, instead of listening to it on my headphones, I dream of catching her live someday soon. I am happy that she managed a debut headline tour for this album release. And especially pleased this included one London date. I read it went down as a resounding success (therefore, expect she’ll be back again soon). For now, Moyka resumes her European tour in February with dates in Berlin, Hamburg and Zürich.

Seize the chance to witness one of the most exciting new artists in the electronic pop scene if you can!

The post Stream It! “This Beat Is Poptronik” – Fall 2023 appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

]]>

Hey there! Since the last “This Beat is Poptronik” playlist update in June, a lot has happened in the music world.

The summer months have been abuzz with album releases from some of the biggest names in the industry. It’s been a period of incredible experiences where I have relished getting stuck in, championing and supporting the latest album releases from Troye Sivan, Georgia, Kylie Minogue, OMD, Moyka, Kim Petras and Romy. As we head into Fall 2023, as your EQ hosts, Raj and I, are excited to present a new and exciting playlist for all your cosy days at home and away. Whether you’re relaxing on the couch or exploring the great outdoors, expect to hear some of the best pop, electronic and indie tracks released in Q2. Are you ready? Let’s unpack, “This Beat Is Poptronik – Fall 2023“…

This Beat Is Poptronik” – Fall 2023 features…

In July, Troye Sivan returned with a dance track, “Rush.” The first single from his third album, “Something To Give Each Other.” This Latin-influenced track was supported with a steamily choreographed video that we have on replay in our heads whenever we listen to “Rush.” In our opinion, this is more than a good enough reason to peg it at the top of the playlist.

We didn’t see this one coming from The Killers, “Your Side of Town.” Since, listening to the track, I couldn’t help but notice the similarities to the music styles of Pet Shop Boys (musically) and New Order (melody/top-line). This epic, impactful track will surely pique the interest of 80s music fans especially.

For the 35th anniversary. The Cash Cash remix of “Tell It To My Heart” has the iconic dance hit up to date. The fact that Taylor Dayne rerecorded the vocal on this new 2023 version just adds to its appeal. Her powerhouse voice still sounds as amazing as ever.

Speaking of comebacks, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, (OMD) really played a blinder on the new album “Bauhaus Staircase“. A massive win for electronic music this year, bulldozing in at #2 in the Official album charts. So many rich pickings from this release, but feel “Veruschka,” is particularly spellbinding. Highly cinematic and fans of The Sound Of Arrows, in particular, are sure to love it.

Besides the above. Embedded in “This Beat Is Poptronik” – Fall 2023 playlist there’s more gems not to be missed from… Sia, Bananarama, Harry Styles, Lauv, Bright Light Bright Light, Zee Machine and Georgia.

Some emerging artists for your radar…

I have waxed lyrical on EQ Music Blog about Nic Billington for years. His music style is electronic with a dark pop aesthetic. There is no doubt whatever Nic puts out is consummate, slick, and stylish. The latest release, a reimagining of Billy Idol‘s track “White Wedding” is super hot in more ways than one. (Ahem… I will say no more than check out the must-see video)

I have lost count of how many times Bentley Robles has featured on the blog this year. With confidence, I can say the “Ugly Crier” EP is a testament to Bentley’s growth as an artist. His takeover of the pop scene is seen through a magic music formula of electro-pop and confessional lyrics.

Chappell Roan – “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl“. I do feel that countries outside the USA, including the UK, still have some catching up to do when it comes to recognizing the talent of this young artist. She is a tenacious pop spirit with exuberance in abundance. Stay tuned… I think Chappell has got what it takes to be the next big pop star.

Quirky pop star! Babymorocco is here to slay with doses of groovealicious electro-pop, thumpa thumpa basslines and pure unadulterated donk. The track “Everyone” is taken from the debut EP “The Sound.” This makes for a groovalicious experience, comprised of hyper-pop beats reminiscent of the music by Calvin Harris and Basshunter from the 2000s. It’s rare to come across music like this in 2023, but this EP resoundingly delivers.

Check out Khazali for easy-listening pop songs with a touch of synths, catchy melodies and lyrics worth listening to. Tracks “Did It For Love” and “Magic” are a perfect blend of soulful funky groove and heated-up aesthetic.

Stay ready for another thrilling update to this playlist as the year comes to a close! We can’t wait to share more of our music taste with you, including more of the latest, “This Beat Is Poptronik” news. So make sure to stay tuned for an updated playlist that will undoubtedly get you moving and grooving!

The latest Moyka album, “Movies, Cars & Heartbreak,” is a must-listen for all music lovers. With her sophomore long-player, the Norwegian singer-songwriter has outdone herself, showcasing her musical talent and exceptional production skills. From the outset, the album takes us on a journey through Moyka’s world of cinematic soundscapes, heart-breaking narratives, and fast-paced alt-electronic melodies. It’s a true masterpiece that captivates listeners with every single track. If you haven’t had the chance to listen to “Movies, Cars & Heartbreak” yet, you’re missing out on one of the best electronic music albums of the year.

In complement of the “Movies, Cars & Heartbreak” release, Moyka also shared a series of music videos for the tracks “Rear View,” “Already Gone,” and “Perfect Movie Scene.” Each clip showcases her unique style with a touch of Nordic mysticism attached. These videos convey the common thread of a restless heart navigating through the complexities of relationships. Noticeably Moyka’s artistry is exceptional, and her videos are a must-watch for all music lovers who appreciate creative expression.

Listen on Apple Music

Sharing the clip for “Never Say Sorry,” the visual noticeably showcases her artistic strengths like never seen before. The song is based on the idea that great heartbreakers never say sorry. Therefore, the video concept they chose, features Moyka and her sidekick, fellow Norwegian singer Iris Caltwait, as reckless and animated in their assigned movie-like roles. Once more, Sara Westergaard Karlsen directed the video, which appears to be influenced by the movie “Kill Bill“.

Watching the clip I couldn’t help but notice the incredible power she exudes. For one thing I’ve subsequently learned. That when Moyka’s back is against the wall, she’ll think nothing of whipping out a samurai sword in an blink of an eye. But that’s only a part of the story, and enough spoilers from me. Need To find out what happens next?… watch the clip for yourself.

Similarly, you wouldn’t want to miss out on “Movies, Cars & Heartbreak.” It’s a fantastic way to spend half an hour. Give it a listen and indulge in some great music. Listen HERE

The post Watch “Perfect Movie Scene” by Moyka appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

I’ve been eagerly following Moyka for the past six months, and I must say, her latest electronic pop music has been nothing short of amazing. Her sophomore album, “Movies, Cars & Heartbreak,” is out 20th October. And I am incredibly excited to hear it. As far, we know, the album centres around the concept of big emotions and the movie-like moments they create. The singles “Rear View,” “Already Gone,” “Don’t Turn Around,” and “Perfect Movie Scene” align with the album’s premise. Since they perfectly capture the complex feelings associated with love and heartbreak. Whether they bring us joy or sorrow, love has a way of turning our lives upside down.

Moyka just shared the music video for the latest single, “Perfect Movie Scene,” which serves as the final lead-in track before the album releases. The visual is directed by Sara Westergaard. Living in Norway, Moyka is privileged to be surrounded by breathtakingly stunning scenery. Thus making a “Perfect Movie Scene” never too far away. There’s an inexplicable spiritual-like energy that runs through the Norwegian landscape, which is often difficult to articulate, but for those who have visited, as I can attest, it’s an undeniable presence.

Listen on Apple Music

In these last six months, I’ve been keeping up with Moyka’s music and I’ve noticed something pretty cool. She’s been experimenting with her music style and it’s really paying off. With each release, these tracks just become more epic and bold. I’ve also noticed that she’s been working with collaborator Eirik Hella and together they’ve been incorporating EDM elements into her music. It’s pretty awesome because it adds a whole new level of euphoria to her already amazing dark-edge alt-pop sound.

I’m so excited about the upcoming album “Movies, Cars & Heartbreak“! But the news that Moyka just announced her first headline European tour is even more thrilling! She will visit Bergen, Reykjavik, Trondheim, Stavanger, Berlin, Hamburg, and Zurich. And to top it all off, she will also be playing a London date. The Sebright Arms on November 1st. (DETAILS HERE)

It is funny how things always seem to align in unexpected ways. As a matter of fact, recently, I was extremely fortunate to get away on vacation. Wouldn’t you know it (since the scenario happened before, also,) Moyka released yet another new single! It’s almost as if she’s always one step ahead of me, no matter where I go. This time around, while I was soaking up the sun on a Mediterranean escapade, she dropped her latest track, “Don’t Turn Around.” It’s her third single of the year, and it’s already creating a fair amount of buzz.

As I’ve been following her music release journey since the beginning of her career, it’s fair to say that I’ve come to recognize her signature musical style. Although, while I appreciate her witchy alt-electronic pop offerings, I also approve that she’s venturing out of this comfort zone a bit now. On “Don’t Turn Around,” she noticeably experiments with EDM and heavy basslines, giving the music an extra dynamic twist. It’s great to witness her trying new things and evolving as an artist.

Listen on Apple Music

Working with Anders Kjaer and Sivert Hjeltnes Hagtvet on these latest three tracks (“Rear View,” “Already Gone” and “Don’t Turn Around“) has really brought out Moyka’s adventurous side. In the latest track, “Don’t Turn Around,” it’s clear that Moyka is pushing herself creatively. It’s exciting to see her experimenting with new sounds and styles. This track feels like a breath of fresh air, enormous fun and filled with a purposeful sense of reinvigoration.

Speaking about the concept of her latest track, Moyka explains…

“This song is about a situationship where the door is always open, all you have to do is turn around, and it’s on again, just as easy as lighting a match”.

Furthermore, there is some thrilling news to share… Moyka has revealed that her second album, “Movies, Cars & Heartbreak,” will be available on October 20th. I had a hunch she was working on something new, after all the latest music releases. Accordingly, I’m eagerly anticipating this album and can’t wait to hear it!

It was exciting to note a new track by Moyka that popped up online this week. The Norwegian pop witch returns with her second track release of the year. The new song “Already Gone“, follow up to the darkly mysterious “Rear View,” is another captivating offering and mystical look into her beguiling world of music and art. Moyka describes “Already Gone” as – “The second taste, the other side of heartbreak, the uprising of a broken girl whose ready to fly again.”

Both new songs feature Moyka’s deep dive into electronic pop soundscapes which are stylistically reminiscent of Royskopp. The music, when paired with her ethereal and transcending vocals, somewhat bridges a gap left by Robyn. Since this is a music style, Moyka has experimented with before. The fact that she has not yet featured on a Royksopp project surprises me.

In this era. A distinct connection between the Sara Westergaard-directed music videos and a larger concept, is evident, yet, only explained in part . Although, symbolic references like arrows and escalators are seen throughout the “Already Gone” video. The clip suggests there’s more to be discovered than meets the eye. In addition to the intense song lyrics. These symbolic gestures indicate someone wanting to take their life in a different direction.

It is interesting witnessing Moyka leap from electronic music into something where she creates a multisensory- a body of work. This does not apply to the music videos alone. Anyone who signed up to the mailing list will tell you. With each track release, Moyka sends out a gorgeous fanzine to her mailing list subscribers, which goes more in-depth about each song. They are each like beautiful, individual liner notes. Sign-up for Moyka’s mailing list HERE

I swear it seems like every time I go on vacation, my favourite music artists will release new music. Although, undoubtedtly, my main dilemma begins when I get back to home and have to decide which songs I have time to write about. However, writing about Moyka was never in doubt. Since I was anticipating the comeback of the Norwegian singer-songwriter. It’s also because she hasn’t yet released a track I haven’t found spellbinding.

In some way, I was a tad amused Moyka (a Norwegian artist) released a new song “Rear View” as I spent two weeks sailing the spectacular coast of Norway and the Artic. But, I was equally frustrated, I had to wait days to pick up a phone signal before I could enjoy the darkly mysterious synth-pop song for the first time.

She begins her new era with “Rear View” using her trademark haunting sonics that blends seamlessly with her suitably ethereal vocal. Another familiar trait of Moyka’s music I particularly enjoy is the sense of mystery evoked in her songs. In this outing, she expands on this signature style. Creating a soundscape which is progressively chilling and exquisite. It’s an exploration of destructive love through a cinematic perspective.

Listen on Apple Music

In the music video directed by frequent collaborator Sara Westergaard Karlsen, Moyka exhibits her greatest growth as an artist. The clip is full of moodiness and expression and features many of Moyka’s favourite touch-points. Dimly lit visuals. The Norwegian landscape. Also once more, we see Moyka processing her feelings using expressive dance movements. Here, she appears absorbed by the immersive experience of encapsulating every detail of the lyrical narrative, about the difficulty of letting someone go. In conjunction with the music video, “Rear View” has a powerful energy that matches the track’s nuanced and emotional lyrics.

She won critics over with her debut album “The Revelations of Love“. With “Rear View,” the opening gambit of a new music era, Moyka adds some clout to her brilliant synth-pop mastery.
