I’ve been overwhelmed by the fantastic new album releases lately. And with the bank holiday weekend here, it’s the perfect opportunity to share an exciting album review. Whether you’re gearing up for a lively BBQ, hitting the road for an adventure, or just lounging at home with some snacks and a flavoursome beverage. You’ll doubtless want to discover fresh music to elevate your experience. With this in mind, not long ago, I teased that pop sensation Tom Aspaul was getting ready to unveil his third album. Well, the moment has finally arrived. Tom’s highly anticipated album “Cabin Fever” is out now, and it’s a must-listen!

Sharing some thoughts in December 2024 on the first single release “Sauna/Cabin,” I noted… “With an undeniable spark ignited, Tom vividly relives the adventures of his mind-altering Swedish encounter, captivating listeners and leaving them wanting more“.

Continuing on, Tom elaborates…

“I went to Sweden to relax post-tour and ended up staying awake for two days almost losing my mind. It was not conducive to relaxation at all. I would like to go on record saying I would never recommend LSD or any type of drug, we were very stupid to think we had any sort of control. However, we got through it together and it spawned an album. Over the last 18 months, I’ve been reliving every second of it with Gil Lewis (producer/songwriter) and I’m so thrilled (and relieved) to share this crazy experience”.

When listening to “Cabin Fever” for the first time, it’s impossible not to notice the dramatic shift in musical direction. Coupled with the meticulous refinement of pop stylings throughout the album. Producer Gil Lewis employs an impressive array of production techniques. Thus creating innovative soundscapes that merge seamlessly with Tom’s lush, pop-rich vocals. This blend not only elevates the overall audio experience but also highlights Tom’s profound lyrical artistry with striking authenticity and emotional depth. In comparison to the vibrant disco and dance-pop aesthetics of his earlier albums, “Black Country Disco” and “Life In Plastic“. “Cabin Fever” offers a more introspective and mature perspective. Above all inviting listeners to engage with the themes of personal growth and transformation embedded in each track.

The album’s focus singles, “Drama” and “That Girl,” powerfully embody a mature musical and deeply confessional lyrical perspective. “Drama,” for example, delves into introspection and profound soul-searching. Yet Tom skillfully juxtaposes this heavy emotional weight with a self-directed music video featuring an outfit evocative of a Shakespearean bard. “The drama has defined me, who am I reminded of?” he sings, inviting us to ponder on this thought-provoking dialogue.

Another standout moment of musical diversity arises in “That Girl,” a collaboration with Gil Lewis and Stefan Storm of The Sound of Arrows. This track poignantly captures the longing for a carefree existence, as Tom reflects on the longing and isolation experienced as a gay man. He laments, “I never ever got affection from the guys, no attention from anyone, ooh I didn’t have a chance, just a fear of love and rejection. Another lonely young queer in a small town looking for a change to come (But it never did).” The accompanying visualizer is a breathtaking display of animated psychedelia. The clip is crafted by Jill Chrisp of Studio Shuggi, enhancing the song’s emotional impact and allure. But let me tell you, a display of phenomenal artistry carries all the way through this project.

Personal and intense at times. Ultimately, thought-provoking and revealing, “Cabin Fever” is stellar work. Essential listening.

Listen to “Can I Be Honest?” EP by Zee Machine https://eqmusicblog.com/listen-to-can-i-be-honest-ep-by-zee-machine/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 09:43:51 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=37257 "Can I Be Honest?" by Zee Machine delivers unforgettable tunes and powerful vocals on an EP that is undeniably bold and self-assured; a must-listen

The post Listen to “Can I Be Honest?” EP by Zee Machine appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

I’m in awe of Zee Machine and the journey towards the release of their sophomore EP. From the infectious tracks “The Radio,” “Good Boy,” “Anyone But Him” featuring Bentley Robles, to the final lead-in track “Worse.” All of which provided a taste of the excellent pop mastery to come. With the EP “Can I Be Honest?” now released, I can confidently say that the entire body of work that explores the stages of love and loss after break-up, is nothing short of incredible. Furthermore, I feel certain I have said this before. It feels like Zee Machine’s time has well and truly arrived.

I remember the moment when I first listened to the track “The Radio.” It was an unforgettable experience that left a lasting impression on me. Every aspect of the song struck a chord with me, from the profound emotional depth to the thought-provoking lyrical content and the captivating melody. It is like a masterpiece of pop music, perfectly crafted in every way. Furthermore, being fortunate to hear this one live when the Bentley Robles and Zee Machine co-headlined Tears and Gearz tour came to London in May genuinely impressed upon me Zee Machine’s vocal capabilities in a new light. I was and still am in a complete state of ecstasy and awe.

Listen on Apple Music

Furthermore, little did I dare to imagine Zee Machine might similarly render me awestruck again, so soon. I was wrong, however. The three new tracks, “I’m In Love (With Everyone),” “Heartbreakery,” and “Killshot,” are absolute pop dynamite. Through the songs on the EP, Zee shares their deeply vulnerable thoughts, offering a powerful, often witty reflection on the complexities of relationships.

“I wanted the most elevated, exhilarating take on a break up record I could make. It’s steamy, petty, sad, furious, messy, and joyful. I sang my ass off, wrote my heart out, and played like my life depended on it. No matter who you are, you’ll relate to something. I’ve never felt so sure about anything I’ve created.” Zee Machine exclaims!

Throughout the entire journey, Zee displays a complete range of musical abilities, creating unforgettable tunes and delivering powerful vocals. What sets Zee Machine apart is their confident, unique take on pop—culminating in an EP that’s undeniably bold, self-assured, and most importantly, absolutely worth a listen.

ALBUM REVIEW: “Enjoy Youth” by Bright Light Bright Light https://eqmusicblog.com/album-review-enjoy-youth-by-bright-light-bright-light/ Fri, 17 May 2024 09:35:24 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=36938 What an album! "Enjoy Youth" by Bright Light Bright Light, lives up to its name: the uplifting, vibrant music brings joy & positivity to a weary world

The post ALBUM REVIEW: “Enjoy Youth” by Bright Light Bright Light appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

]]>

Bright Light Bright Light’s fifth album, “Enjoy Youth,” has been released at a particularly opportune moment. This week has presented a myriad of challenges on various fronts, and the arrival of Rod Thomas’ new album couldn’t be more timely. With its infectious dance beats and relatable narratives, the album serves as a welcomed escape from the current array of struggles and issues that are affecting the world.

As I’ve eagerly counted down to the album release on the blog, I’ve been sharing articles about the lead-in singles. From the very beginning, it was clear that BLBL was creating something extraordinary for fans of synth-pop. Even before I knew about the album’s title or theme, I could feel the infectious, feel-good vibes from the songs. As the single-release campaign continued, tracks like “You Want My” and, more recently, “Heartslap” featuring Mykal Kilgore, have truly brought this joyfulness to life.

The album “Enjoy Youth” boasts exciting collaborations with GRAMMY-nominated Mykal Kilgore, dance music icon Ultra Naté, Sam Harper (voice of Riton “Friday Night“), Berri (known for her massive 90s hit “Sunshine After The Rain“), and Beth Hirsch (featured on Air’s classic album “Moon Safari“). If you’re already a Bright Light Bright Light fan, you’ve likely enjoyed the danceable treats Rod has already released. Such as “Sweet Release,” “Boys Etc.,” “Down to One,” “Every Emotion,” and “Heartslap.” But let me tell you, “Enjoy Youth” offers even more, with its captivating mix of glittering electro-pop, 90s house, bursts of HiNRG synth-pop and phenomenal artistry.

I truly believe that “Enjoy Youth” is Rod’s finest album yet. The track “Snap!” featuring Berri is an absolute standout, exuding strong A-ha vibes, and it has become my personal favourite on the album. The dance-pop elements in this song transport me to a state of pure bliss, and I had a strong inkling that it would turn out to be an Ian Masterson-produced track.

Thank you so much, Rod, for creating “Enjoy Youth.” Your album has brought a much-needed sense of joy and positivity to this weary world. The uplifting and vibrant music is a breath of fresh air, and it’s an album truly living up to its name.

Many pop aficionados are already saying that Metteson is likeliest Norway’s next big pop star. Indeed, Metteson is swiftly becoming Norway’s most promising pop star, and for good reason. With a co-sign from Sigrid, touring experience with AURORA, and widespread acclaim in his home country, Metteson’s talent is undeniable. After listening to his debut album “Look To A Star,” it’s noticeable that he possesses a rare artistry that has the potential to captivate audiences around the globe. I certainly felt a sense that, it’s not a matter of, if Metteson will become a superstar but rather when.

Metteson’s music is a true masterpiece that showcases the sensibility of his stellar acting background. His debut album is filled with mesmerizing drama and epic moments of musicality that make it stand out from the crowd. It’s not just the big pop tracks where he shines; He also displays a vulnerable side to his pop-making. His captivating vocals helm a beguiling mix of anthemic synth-pop and alternative leaning electronica, somewhat reminiscent of Asgeir, on tracks such as “Wallace Road,” “Ever Working Tide,” and “Heavier Than A Heart.” These tracks are evidence of Metteson’s musical genius and his ability to create music that captures the heart and soul of his listeners. If you’re a fan of pop music that’s both glossy and vulnerable, you won’t be disappointed in “Look To A Star“!

Listen on Apple Music

Metteson has become a sensation in Norway with his incredible music. Especially with recent focus tracks like melancholy, dance floor banger “Waves” and the powerful alt-pop offering “Put It To Sleep.” His latest focus single, “Look To A Star,” showcases his undeniable pop presence and glistening Nordic cool. I highly recommend immersing yourself in the sonic experience of this album, starting with the title track, and latest album focus “Look To A Star“. It’s a perfect representation of the album’s style and is sure to leave you feeling amazed and enthralled.

Check out Metteson’s debut album “Look To A Star” HERE

Looking for an immersive experience that combines theatre and dance? Look no further than Metteson’s live performances. This talented artist has a reputation for putting on quite a show. (Hints of this are in the “Look To A Star” music video). It’s interesting to note that he’s been to the UK before. He toured with AURORA and also performed at least one low-key show of his own in the capital in 2022. If you missed him then, don’t worry – he’ll be back in London and Manchester in May as part of his European tour. Don’t miss your chance to catch this rising star in action.

The post Watch “Pressure’s On” by Oh Land appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

]]>

I discovered that the Danish pop star Oh Land was getting ready to drop her sixth album, “Loop Soup,” a few months ago. (The album eventually came out in September, following the release of the singles “Bleeed,” “My Freak,” and “Bucket List.“) Naturally, I was curious to give it a listen. Snatching some quiet time this weekend, I relished the opportunity to check it out.

Diving into “Loop Soup“, I found it consistent with her music aesthetic. In that, Oh Land’s Nanna has been experimenting with various music styles. She has incorporated quirkiness, soulful funk, and sounds from the 70s discotheque, along with the all-important synths – that I personally enjoy.

Moreover, each of the chosen singles of this album showcases a different aspect of Oh Land’s musical artistry. However, after listening to “Loop Soup“, I feel there are also tracks that better exhibit the style of some of her older revered releases. And yet, with that said, it is a shame that I missed out on the arrival of the latest single, “Bucket List.” Especially since the quirky little diddy is a real gem among the single releases. Nanna explained to Flood Magazine, “This song is a bucket list of things I want my love to do, in case I die first.”

Strangely, bearing in mind the promotion cycle completed for this project, thus far, only one music video has been released to date. Although, happily, this is the clip for the standout track with a noticeable electronic style similar to Röyksopp, “Pressure’s On“. This magnificent song encourages us to be kinder to ourselves, reminding us that not everything in life is a challenge. It emphasizes the importance of being mindful of our wellness and not hesitating to ask for help when needed.

Listen on Apple Music

Nanna has mentioned that “Loop Soup” is a personal album. As I interpret it, the track “Pressure’s On” references the beginning of her music career. (She embarked on music after she sustained a back injury and could no longer pursue a career as a ballet dancer.) Recently, she released a majestic virtual reality clip created by the Danish interdisciplinary artist Ida Kvetny. The stunning video features a fembot figure gracefully dancing a ballet sequence against an otherworldly backdrop of cloud-like formations. This is where I sensed Ida’s visual supports my theory. Moreover as the clip seemingly represents the mind and relates to mental health.

I am grateful that the “Pressure’s On” video popped up on my timeline a few days ago. Since it spurred me to listen to this glorious album. “Loop Soup” has some real gems on it – “100% Terrible,” “Artists Don’t Smile,” “Waiting,” “Bucket List,” and “I’d Rather Sing.” I highly recommend giving it a listen.

You can stream the album HERE.

The post Listen to the self-titled album by pop music legend Martin Kierszenbaum appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

]]>

It’s that time of the year when music enthusiasts look back at the releases of the past twelve months. And similarly turn their attention to emerging artists who show promise for the year ahead. The buzz around “ones-to-watch” tips for 2024 is already heating up. Therefore, I’m sure I’ll have more to say on this topic in the coming weeks. But for now, let’s take a moment to pause and reflect.

I thought it would be fun to rewind back the EQ Music Blog archives. In particular, to a decade ago, when we shined a spotlight on pop and emerging acts like Lady Gaga, Ellie Goulding, Robyn, La Roux, Far East Movement, LMFAO, Frankmusik, and Colette Carr, among others. Interestingly, many of these artists had a shared bond. They received assistance in their careers in some way from Martin Kierszenbaum, something that some of our readers may already know about.

For those who may not know, Martin Kierszenbaum is the founder of Cherrytree Music Company. But he’s not just a music label CEO, producer, and songwriter – he’s also a musician at heart. Martin has released music under various aliases, his most notable being Cherry Cherry Boom Boom, covered on EQ Music.

Now that you’ve had a chance to digest the information above. I am willing to bet that you’re feeling pretty intrigued by Martin. Therefore, we think it cool, to again point out the audio interview with Martin first shared on EQ in 2011 from when Raj interviewed him.

Despite being busy with music management with Sting and Shaggy, Martin still finds time to record his own solo tracks to this day. Recently, he released a self-titled album consisting of 10 songs recorded over time, along with two brand new tracks titled “Inner Enemy” and “Back to Us.”

Listen on Apple Music

Since we admire Martin’s work and out of pure curiosity, we decided to give his latest album a listen – and we have some thoughts…

One thing that became immediately clear was that this album was a true labour of love for Martin Kierszenbaum. He wrote, produced, and performed every aspect of it, and it shows in the final product. While some might view this album as indulgent, we see it as Martin simply creating the music that he loves. What really stands out in this release is Martin’s extensive experience in the music industry. His understanding of the fundamentals, production techniques, and songwriting skills are all on full display here, as well as his impressive musicality and musicianship. Above all, Martin’s passion for music shines through in every track.

It’s worth noting that this album falls under the alt-pop genre, which might come as a surprise to those who know Martin primarily for his work shaping the careers of other pop artists. But ultimately, if you want to really get to know Martin Kierszenbaum, all you need to do is listen to this dynamic and impressive album.

Though rarely seen as a musician, Martin’s music is often heard and highly sought after. Don’t miss the chance to delve into the personal alt-pop world of this talented artist. And furthermore understand why he is highly regarded in the music industry.

The post Kylie Minogue releases album “Tension” appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

I have to admit, I’m not usually one to gush over mega pop stars, but Kylie Minogue has really outdone herself with her latest album “Tension.” It’s not that her previous work wasn’t great, but this album is truly unskippable and a joy to listen to. And let’s not forget about Saturday evening’s TV coverage (UK) dedicated to her – it’s clear that she’s still loved by many fans around the world. Kylie truly is a queen of the pop realm.

Hot on the heels of her headline performance at Radio 2 In the Park, in Leeds where she performed the tracks “Padam Padam” and “Tension” from the album, another new song “Hold On To Now” was premiered globally. In fact, I may be jumping the gun a little in my assumptions, but I think this track has a good chance of becoming the next official single. The only potential issue could be that it’s a bit longer than typical radio play length, which might not be ideal. But overall, it seems like a promising decision.

Listen on Apple Music

Wow, “Hold On To Now” is such a beautiful and shimmering song! The synths in it remind me so much of The Sound of Arrows, which is just amazing. My first listen to this track absolutely blew me away, and I couldn’t wait to feature it on the blog. The entire “Tension” album is fantastic, and it’s hard for me to choose favourites. Since, overall, the album is 45 minutes of pure joy and uplifting energy.

I was thinking that “Story” would make a great single to release next or “Vegas High” for that matter. Equally, they’ve got really cool synth-pop vibes that I think would really resonate with listeners. I’ve only listened to “Tension” a few times, but I think these could be great follow-up choices. This album is so good that the possibilities are endless, really. And much like every other pop fan, I am excited to see where this goes next!

"Je T'Adore" and "Treat Me Like A Ho" stand out as essential tracks.

It’s interesting to reflect on Kim PetrasFeed The Beast” debut album. (Especially considering I was away when it was unleashed in June). Since it is readily apparent, the body of work delivers infectious hooks and catchy melodies that instantly stick in your head. Yet the body of work as a whole felt a little lacking in the playfulness presence that Kim had shown in the lead-up to its release. As fans may recall, the debut album’s rollout was impacted by an unfortunate leak, which forced a change in plans. Regardless, “Feed The Beast” serves plenty of dance-pop goodness. Albeit if some of us couldn’t help but crave a bit more.

I was looking forward to the shelved album “Problématique” by Kim. Just hearing the name made me think of her fun and playful side. Especially so in light of her previous EP, “Slut Pop,” that became such a hit. It has seemed plausible she might continue exploring these themes and sounds. Her fans went crazy for it. It would make sense if she followed the trend. By the same token. It surely will not have escaped anyone’s notice how Kim takes pleasure in spicing things up. That she does this with such, charm and sparkle. The leaked “Problématique” oozed with this style of cheeky escapist pop, release.

Listen on Apple Music

I am excited to share that Kim has officially released “Problématique“! (Even since it arrived as a surprise for her fans. Also no doubt in-lieu of volume 3 of “Turn Off The Light” Halloween mixtape that is still much craved by fans). However, this means there will be even more fun times to look forward to on her upcoming “Feed The Beast” world tour. The tour starts in Austin on September 27th for the North American leg and will make its way to the UK and Europe in February/March 2024. It’s sure to be an incredible experience, and I can’t wait to see what Kim has in store for her fans. Bearing in mind the tracks where she appears at her most funnest and playful are “Je T’Adore” and “Treat Me Like A Ho,” I think we can be confident this tour experience will be a blast.

The post Listen to “In Bad Company” EP by Bobi Andonov appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

]]>

As I was carrying out my usual rounds of checking other music sites I stumbled upon an article from Aussievision concerning the former Junior Eurovision star Bobi Andonov. Therefore, I would first ask if you will cast your mind back to 2018. The blogosphere was singing the praises of the up-and-coming Australian alt-pop artist Bobi Andonov. Despite the initial buzz, the hype around Bobi seemed to have died down somewhat quickly. However, I recently discovered that he’s been gaining some serious momentum this year, culminating in the release of his debut EP “In Bad Company” last week. It’s crazy to think I was oblivious to his journey all this time. Nonetheless, I am immediately excited upon listening to the music.

Therefore, having spent some time this week with “In Bad Company.” I noted it’s somewhat a concept EP that delves into the complexities of desire and the consequences arising from the choices we make. For this reason, the music is appropriately dark and alluring, and Bobi’s vocals are nothing short of soul-stirring and powerful. It’s an introspective journey that sheds light on the inner conflicts everyone faces from time to time.

Listen on Apple Music

It’s quite a challenge to pick just one standout track from Bobi’s collection of six songs. Since each song has its own unique charm and appeal. However, what really ties them all together is Bobi’s incredible vocal talent and masterful unique voice. His brand of intelligent pop is truly something special. Brimming with clever arrangements and lyrics that are both thought-provoking and honest. Not least, I’m blown away by his powerful voice.

Although obviously, it would be remiss of me not to single out “Guilty,” the latest emotively charged focus track. Every note and word seems to be infused with Bobi’s heart and soul. Thus listening to his soaring pop vocals might inspire you do some introspection of your own. Those looking for more of an electro-pop vibe. In this instance, “Pretty Pills” is my go-to recommendation.

Although I have no official news, my instincts say some press person should probably be pushing Bobi Andonov’s album to the UK market. “In Bad Company” is the brand of deliciously dark pop we eat up, over here.
