It’s no surprise that Kim Petras is set to perform at PRIDE events this summer, as her presence has become a staple of these celebrations. It would truly feel incomplete without her as a headliner or at least part of the lineup. This summer presents an excellent opportunity for this pop powerhouse to not only thrill fans with her extensive repertoire of beloved hits but also to introduce fresh material. Given the hints about her time in the studio, it was therefore, highly likely she may debut some new tracks. When she first released “POLO,” fans were pleasantly surprised to see her embrace a full-on club-ready, EDM sound, showcasing her evolving artistry.

Following the much-anticipated unveiling, Bunheads have become fervently enthusiastic about the track “POLO,” but their excitement doesn’t stop there. A significant number of fans have been vocal about their desire for Kim to share another electrifying track, “Freak It,” which recently featured in her sets. It’s easy to understand why this bass-heavy club anthem has the Bunheads buzzing with excitement. Notably, the infectious energy and powerful beats are perfect for a lively night out. Moreover, the influence of last summer’s “BRAT” effect has carried over. As we see its impact resonating with some of pop’s leading ladies, including the vibrant Kesha, who is similarly riding a wave of popularity this summer. And now it appears Kim is also hopping on this trend. Either way the embrace of electrifying electro by such artists is creating a thrilling atmosphere in the current music scene.

Listen on Apple Music

Speaking of “Freak It”, Kim says…

I miss the chaos and joy of artists like LMFAO and Avicii, and honestly, I just want to lose my mind at clubs this summer listening to this song. The fans yelling at me to release it basically did me a favor. God was definitely in the studio that day.”

Currently, collaborations with the dynamic duo Frost Children are creating a significant buzz in the music industry. Their exceptional talent in hyper-pop production has played a pivotal role in shaping Babymorocco‘s debut album, “Amour.” An album that has not only received critical acclaim from music reviewers but has also captured the hearts of fans, establishing a strong presence in the genre. Similarly, the Frost Children make an impression for Kim’s “Freak It,” which delivers an electrifying surge of synth-pop energy. This song perfectly blends vibrant, pulsating synths with a backdrop of frenetic bass beats, creating an exhilarating listening experience.

I think we can assume the era that follows next shall be Kim’s boldest yet.

Asserts the spirit of empowerment and individuality

I’m about to head off on a short summer vacation. Although, I couldn’t leave without sharing an incredible pride anthem: “Independent Girls & Nasty Evil Gays” by the talented Dutch soul pop artist Jeangu Macrooy. This song has been relentlessly playing in my mind since my very first listen. And it’s impossible to ignore the powerful satirical narrative that boldly addresses issues of sexism and queerphobia. It’s a track that deserves to be celebrated and shared!

While the song title alone leaves a strong impression, Jeangu elevates his role as spokesman by diving deeper into the message. Throughout the track, he passionately articulates a message that champions equality and authenticity, urging listeners to embrace their true selves and stand against societal norms that stifle individuality. By weaving personal anecdotes and relatable experiences into his lyrics, he creates a compelling narrative that resonates with the listener, inspiring them to pursue their own journey toward empowerment and self-acceptance.

Listen on Apple Music

“It’s a funny, sarcastic protest anthem for the girls and the gays” says Jeangu. “I wrote it from the perspective of people who blame feminism and queerness for everything that’s “wrong” in the world – just to highlight how ridiculous and outdated that mindset really is.”

Jeangu certainly has a way to get his message across. Moreover, there is no doubt “It’s a very tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top satire, and we leaned all the way in” says Jeangu. “It’s camp, it’s chaos, and it’s got a message.”

If you’re a Eurovision enthusiast, you likely know Jeangu Macrooy. He was set to represent the Netherlands in 2020 with his powerful song “Grow,” but the pandemic cancelled the event. Undeterred, Jeangu continues to expand his artistic pursuits. And will release his highly anticipated fourth studio album, “Young, Awkward & Lonely,” this autumn. This summer, he’ll star as Orpheus in the acclaimed musical “Hadestown” at the Royal Theater Carré in Amsterdam.

While pride anthems are undeniably abundant, there’s something extraordinarily special about “Independent Girls & Nasty Evil Gays.” This track not only asserts the spirit of empowerment and individuality but also boldly challenges stereotypes in a way that resonates deeply. Its catchy rhythm and fierce lyrics provide an anthem for those embracing their true selves. Thus making it unequivocally unique in a wave of somewhat predictable pride-themed music.

EMERGING ARTIST: STAN PRATT https://eqmusicblog.com/emerging-artist-stan-pratt/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 07:31:32 +0000 https://eqmusicblog.com/?p=39036 We're in for the long haul. As Stan Pratt infuses his music with a nostalgic, yet fresh vibe, his deep love for 80s synth-pop inspires his music's bold, maximalist feel.

I am absolutely thrilled about this week’s standout release: “Je Ne Sais Quoi,” the debut track from London’s very own self-proclaimed “Pop Girlie Boy,Stan Pratt. Now, I can already hear the questions: Doesn’t Kylie have a track with the same name? Is this a reimagining? The answer is a resounding no. Kylie recorded “Je ne sais pas pourquoi” for her iconic 1988 debut album “Kylie,” but these two tracks couldn’t be more different in sound and style. Kylie embodies that classic disco and dance-pop flair we all love, while Stan Pratt is here to push boundaries with his bold, maximalist pop infused with an alternative edge.

Interestingly, I see a parallel between Stan and the current alt-pop sensation Chloe Qisha, who holds a degree in psychology. Stan brings a unique twist of his own, boasting a degree in neuroscience. (Surprised? I certainly was!). This combination of academic prowess and musical talent is sure to create something truly unique.

Listen on Apple Music

Describing the debut offering “Je Ne Sais Quoi,” the song is playful and upbeat albeit notably brimming with a vibrant, cool and thought-provoking narrative, teeming with tongue-in-cheek lyricism.

“I wrote it about a certain category of male narcissist, and at the start of the song, I allude to the way he’s been shaped by his upbringing.” Though the track’s protagonist was “treasured like an angel from the skies”, he’s now “dancing with the devil just to bring you down a level” – in other words, precisely the kind of bad boy who’s tough to resist,” Stan explains.

Stan’s deep love for 80s synth-pop infuses his music with a nostalgic yet fresh vibe that truly resonates with me. While I’m not aware of him covering any of Kylie’s tracks. I can confidently say that his rendition of Bronski Beat’sSmalltown Boy” is a must-listen (check it out here). It’s a brilliant interpretation that showcases his unique style!

When exploring new music and emerging artists, I always trust my instincts. In this case, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of excitement about Stan Pratt. I genuinely believe I’m in for the long haul with his sound. If you’re a fan of Charli XCX, MARINA, Alfie Templeman, or Conan Gray, then I have no doubt you’ll find yourself equally captivated by Stan Pratt.

The new Robert DeLong track “Somebody Watching Me” is absolutely captivating! It’s a testament to this genre-defying artist’s unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of electronica and tech. Fifteen years after his groundbreaking debut with “Global Concepts,” DeLong continues to set the standard in his field. In an exciting move, he recently released the deluxe edition of his 2024 album “PLAYLIST of DOOM,” almost entirely crafted in the freedom of his home studio—free from label pressures, A&R restrictions, and outside producers. This deluxe edition, “PLAYLIST of DOOM: After DARK,” chiefly reveals DeLong at his most authentic and adventurous, showcasing a rawness and creativity that feels truly groundbreaking.

This is not to suggest that Robert DeLong creates in isolation from his influences and inspirations. On the contrary, his artistic vision is driven by a relentless pursuit of creativity in every aspect of life. Furthermore, as an artist with a proven track record of longevity, he confidently ventures into experimental realms without hesitation. Collaborating with frequent partner DEANE on “Somebody Watching Me” allows DeLong to boldly traverse the landscape of pop legends, crafting a soundscape that feels equally familiar and strikingly authentic.

Speaking on “Somebody Watching Me“…

“This one is a reversal on the idea of paranoia, you feel like you’re being watched, but it’s because you can’t stop thinking about someone,” says DeLong. “It has this Daft Punk meets Michael Jackson vibe, but with a disaffected, cynical twist.”

Robert’s creative streak extends far beyond music; he masterfully navigates the world of visual art also. Likewise, his fusion of contemporary methods with classic techniques creates a rich tapestry of imagery that evokes the nostalgia of the 80s. The result overall, is an engaging visual experience that captivates the viewer and transports them to a different era.

In discussing the music visualiser, Delong shares, “I filmed and edited the video myself, then brought it into a studio and ran it through a CRT TV setup, my good friend at Terraform LA set up a camera to film it, and then I performed video FX adjustments live. It gave the whole thing this raw, analog energy that is un-replicable in digital.”

Robert DeLong’s music showcases his dynamic evolution, effortlessly blending electronic, indie, and pop elements. His ability to shapeshift across genres keeps him from settling in one place, making him a compelling force in today’s vibrant music landscape, rich with diverse sub-genres. Above all, this fearless experimentation is key to his continued success in the ever-evolving scene.

I have to say, my excitement for the emerging girl band Say Now has skyrocketed recently. I genuinely believe they’re a hot tip for 2025/2026. Amelia, YSSY, and Maddie not only shine in their appearance but also deliver music that truly stands out. To be frank, their performances are nothing short of mesmerising; they captivate the audience with a unique energy. Watching these talented ladies evolve with each release is a delight, as they radiate something truly special.

Following their sold-out debut headline show at Camden Assembly, it feels like they’re on the cusp of unveiling some thrilling announcements. Namely, potentially another EP and, fingers crossed, some tour dates in particular. Above all, these girls deserve to showcase their infectious 2000s RnB pop sound at major festivals and events like the Capital Summer Time Ball. They’re certainly on the rise!

Listen on Apple Music

Nowhere is their RnB pop mastery more evident than in their latest hit, “Brick by Brick“. Solidifying their status as the most sought-after girl group today. Co-written with Gil Lewis and Mae Muller and produced by Maestro. This captivating siren song serves as a powerful commentary on toxic relationships. They boldly address their ex’s new partner, by exposing his deceitful nature. Furthermore urging her not to be swayed by his charming façade. Revealing the truth behind the manipulation. They boldly assert that they were the ones who shaped him into the person he is today.

Brick By Brick” is a song that’s very personal to us. It’s a warning to the next girls who date our exes to not be fooled into thinking that they’re amazing. And that they wouldn’t be the way they are now if we hadn’t taught them how!”

After the overwhelming response to the “Can’t Keep A Beat” music video, the girls are back with an impressively choreographed dance routine for “Brick by Brick.” They are truly honing their skills in this style of music video. But imagine how thrilling it would be to experience this kind of performance live! Let’s hope we hear some exciting news about shows soon!

As we embrace the month of June, dedicated to celebrating pride and honoring the LGBTQ+ communities, there’s an undeniable increase in anthemic musical releases like no other time of the year. These euphoric tracks undoubtedly play a vital role in championing equality and acceptance. However, it’s essential not to overlook the powerful ballads that often go unrecognized. Amidst this vibrant landscape, Trinidad-born, London-based pop artist Rhian! emerges with “My Place In This World,” a compelling ballad infused with raw vulnerability. He emphasizes that this is his most personal song to date, inviting listeners to connect deeply with its heartfelt message.

Rhian!’s previous release from 2025 was an electrifying cover of Sylvester’s iconic track “I Need Somebody To Love Tonight.” This standout disco-pop anthem exemplifies his growing collection of vibrant hits. Known for his ability to switch gears frequently, Rhian! has taken an impactful step with “My Place In This World“: a deeply lyrical and emotionally charged piece coinciding with Pride month celebrations, making it all the more poignant and resonant.

Listen on Apple Music

My Place In This World” reflects how I felt as a gay teenager growing up in a homophobic society. It is about my journey through life, many years searching for a place where I could feel like I could call a home and then finally realising that home is within me. It’s a song for anyone who ever felt like they didn’t belong or fit in anywhere. It’s about perseverance, not listening to naysayers and realising that you are enough and do have a purpose here in this world”. Rhian! imparts.

With an impressive and diverse catalogue of music releases Rhian! further exemplifies his commitment to pushing creative boundaries. This latest track masterfully combines the emotional depth of a ballad with a groundbreaking vocal style that he has yet to explore. By incorporating a spoken-word motif, he adds an intriguing layer that enhances the overall narrative of the song. I had eagerly anticipated the recent release of the recent Autoheart track “Sad Divide,” and they certainly did not disappoint. Furthermore, this LGBTQIA+ alt-pop outfit is following up the exciting momentum with the announcement of their highly anticipated fourth studio album, “Heartlands“. (Set to drop on August 15th via their own O/R Records through AWAL). In addition to this thrilling news, they’ve also unveiled plans for an extensive North American tour kicking off on September 5th. And for their devoted UK “Heartheads,” there’s no need to worry—the band has just revealed three UK dates!

ON SALE NOW HERE

10th October – “Rebellion,” Manchester
11th October – “Oslo”, London (SOLD OUT)
12th October – “Dingwalls”, London

Amid a flurry of exhilarating new updates, Autoheart is thrilled to unveil “Baby Bird,” the second single from the highly anticipated album “Heartlands.” This alt-pop anthem radiates infectious energy, featuring a driving beat and soaring melodies that create an atmosphere of empowerment and joy. Lyrically, it delves into themes of resilience and self-discovery. And furthermore, maintains the profound depth and introspection that fans of the band have come to cherish.

Listen on Apple Music

Speaking about the single, the band explain: “’Baby Bird’ is about surviving yourself. It’s about learning not to fear the fall – or even if you do, doing it anyway – and trusting that even if you f*** it up, given time, you’ll find your way again.”

In these new songs, the band masterfully showcases their lyrical vulnerability, creating a powerful connection with listeners. Their emotive songwriting radiates a profound sense of melancholy, resulting in an intricately composed listening experience. Yet, Autoheart has returned with an exhilarating sound that breathes fresh energy into their music. Thus propelling them to a thrilling new peak in their career.

I can always count on Autoheart to fill my ears with earworm-worthy melodies and heart-pounding harmonies. With “Baby Bird,” I find that the musical styling of this track aligns particularly well with the distinctive and ethereal qualities of MARINA‘s work. Moreover, featuring shimmering synths and poignant lyrics that explore themes of vulnerability and self-discovery. However, I recognize that my comparison may be wide of the mark. Since Autoheart has a unique flair that sets them apart in the indie pop landscape.

haring some insight on “Heartlands,” Autoheart guitarist Barney JC. says…

“This time, we’ve worn our influences on our sleeves—R.E.M., Alanis, Tori, Sheryl… and British bands like The Cure, Tears for Fears, Eurythmics. There’s another world too: indie artists like Ani DiFranco, Liz Phair, Kristin Hersh—outsiders like us.

The post ALBUM REVIEW: “Cabin Fever” by Tom Aspaul appeared first on EQ Music Blog.

]]>

I’ve been overwhelmed by the fantastic new album releases lately. And with the bank holiday weekend here, it’s the perfect opportunity to share an exciting album review. Whether you’re gearing up for a lively BBQ, hitting the road for an adventure, or just lounging at home with some snacks and a flavoursome beverage. You’ll doubtless want to discover fresh music to elevate your experience. With this in mind, not long ago, I teased that pop sensation Tom Aspaul was getting ready to unveil his third album. Well, the moment has finally arrived. Tom’s highly anticipated album “Cabin Fever” is out now, and it’s a must-listen!

Sharing some thoughts in December 2024 on the first single release “Sauna/Cabin,” I noted… “With an undeniable spark ignited, Tom vividly relives the adventures of his mind-altering Swedish encounter, captivating listeners and leaving them wanting more“.

Continuing on, Tom elaborates…

“I went to Sweden to relax post-tour and ended up staying awake for two days almost losing my mind. It was not conducive to relaxation at all. I would like to go on record saying I would never recommend LSD or any type of drug, we were very stupid to think we had any sort of control. However, we got through it together and it spawned an album. Over the last 18 months, I’ve been reliving every second of it with Gil Lewis (producer/songwriter) and I’m so thrilled (and relieved) to share this crazy experience”.

When listening to “Cabin Fever” for the first time, it’s impossible not to notice the dramatic shift in musical direction. Coupled with the meticulous refinement of pop stylings throughout the album. Producer Gil Lewis employs an impressive array of production techniques. Thus creating innovative soundscapes that merge seamlessly with Tom’s lush, pop-rich vocals. This blend not only elevates the overall audio experience but also highlights Tom’s profound lyrical artistry with striking authenticity and emotional depth. In comparison to the vibrant disco and dance-pop aesthetics of his earlier albums, “Black Country Disco” and “Life In Plastic“. “Cabin Fever” offers a more introspective and mature perspective. Above all inviting listeners to engage with the themes of personal growth and transformation embedded in each track.

The album’s focus singles, “Drama” and “That Girl,” powerfully embody a mature musical and deeply confessional lyrical perspective. “Drama,” for example, delves into introspection and profound soul-searching. Yet Tom skillfully juxtaposes this heavy emotional weight with a self-directed music video featuring an outfit evocative of a Shakespearean bard. “The drama has defined me, who am I reminded of?” he sings, inviting us to ponder on this thought-provoking dialogue.

Another standout moment of musical diversity arises in “That Girl,” a collaboration with Gil Lewis and Stefan Storm of The Sound of Arrows. This track poignantly captures the longing for a carefree existence, as Tom reflects on the longing and isolation experienced as a gay man. He laments, “I never ever got affection from the guys, no attention from anyone, ooh I didn’t have a chance, just a fear of love and rejection. Another lonely young queer in a small town looking for a change to come (But it never did).” The accompanying visualizer is a breathtaking display of animated psychedelia. The clip is crafted by Jill Chrisp of Studio Shuggi, enhancing the song’s emotional impact and allure. But let me tell you, a display of phenomenal artistry carries all the way through this project.

Personal and intense at times. Ultimately, thought-provoking and revealing, “Cabin Fever” is stellar work. Essential listening.
