I’m about to head off on a short summer vacation. Although, I couldn’t leave without sharing an incredible pride anthem: “Independent Girls & Nasty Evil Gays” by the talented Dutch soul pop artist Jeangu Macrooy. This song has been relentlessly playing in my mind since my very first listen. And it’s impossible to ignore the powerful satirical narrative that boldly addresses issues of sexism and queerphobia. It’s a track that deserves to be celebrated and shared!

While the song title alone leaves a strong impression, Jeangu elevates his role as spokesman by diving deeper into the message. Throughout the track, he passionately articulates a message that champions equality and authenticity, urging listeners to embrace their true selves and stand against societal norms that stifle individuality. By weaving personal anecdotes and relatable experiences into his lyrics, he creates a compelling narrative that resonates with the listener, inspiring them to pursue their own journey toward empowerment and self-acceptance.

“It’s a funny, sarcastic protest anthem for the girls and the gays” says Jeangu. “I wrote it from the perspective of people who blame feminism and queerness for everything that’s “wrong” in the world – just to highlight how ridiculous and outdated that mindset really is.”

Jeangu certainly has a way to get his message across. Moreover, there is no doubt “It’s a very tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top satire, and we leaned all the way in” says Jeangu. “It’s camp, it’s chaos, and it’s got a message.”

I am absolutely thrilled about this week’s standout release: “Je Ne Sais Quoi,” the debut track from London’s very own self-proclaimed “Pop Girlie Boy,” Stan Pratt. Now, I can already hear the questions: Doesn’t Kylie have a track with the same name? Is this a reimagining? The answer is a resounding no. Kylie recorded “Je ne sais pas pourquoi” for her iconic 1988 debut album “Kylie,” but these two tracks couldn’t be more different in sound and style. Kylie embodies that classic disco and dance-pop flair we all love, while Stan Pratt is here to push boundaries with his bold, maximalist pop infused with an alternative edge.

Interestingly, I see a parallel between Stan and the current alt-pop sensation Chloe Qisha, who holds a degree in psychology. Stan brings a unique twist of his own, boasting a degree in neuroscience. (Surprised? I certainly was!). This combination of academic prowess and musical talent is sure to create something truly unique.

Describing the debut offering “Je Ne Sais Quoi,” the song is playful and upbeat albeit notably brimming with a vibrant, cool and thought-provoking narrative, teeming with tongue-in-cheek lyricism.

“I wrote it about a certain category of male narcissist, and at the start of the song, I allude to the way he’s been shaped by his upbringing.” Though the track’s protagonist was “treasured like an angel from the skies”, he’s now “dancing with the devil just to bring you down a level” – in other words, precisely the kind of bad boy who’s tough to resist,” Stan explains.

Stan’s deep love for 80s synth-pop infuses his music with a nostalgic yet fresh vibe that truly resonates with me. While I’m not aware of him covering any of Kylie’s tracks. I can confidently say that his rendition of Bronski Beat’s “Smalltown Boy” is a must-listen (check it out here). It’s a brilliant interpretation that showcases his unique style!

When exploring new music and emerging artists, I always trust my instincts. In this case, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of excitement about Stan Pratt. I genuinely believe I’m in for the long haul with his sound. If you’re a fan of Charli XCX, MARINA, Alfie Templeman, or Conan Gray, then I have no doubt you’ll find yourself equally captivated by Stan Pratt.

“This one is a reversal on the idea of paranoia, you feel like you’re being watched, but it’s because you can’t stop thinking about someone,” says DeLong. “It has this Daft Punk meets Michael Jackson vibe, but with a disaffected, cynical twist.”

Likewise, his fusion of contemporary methods with classic techniques creates a rich tapestry of imagery that evokes the nostalgia of the 80s. In discussing the music visualiser, Delong shares, “I filmed and edited the video myself, then brought it into a studio and ran it through a CRT TV setup, my good friend at Terraform LA set up a camera to film it, and then I performed video FX adjustments live. It gave the whole thing this raw, analog energy that is un-replicable in digital.”

Watching these talented ladies evolve with each release is a delight, as they radiate something truly special.

Namely, potentially another EP and, fingers crossed, some tour dates in particular. I’ve been overwhelmed by the fantastic new album releases lately. And with the bank holiday weekend here, it’s the perfect opportunity to share an exciting album review. Whether you’re gearing up for a lively BBQ, hitting the road for an adventure, or just lounging at home with some snacks and a flavoursome beverage. You’ll doubtless want to discover fresh music to elevate your experience. With this in mind, not long ago, I teased that pop sensation Tom Aspaul was getting ready to unveil his third album. Well, the moment has finally arrived. Tom’s highly anticipated album “Cabin Fever” is out now, and it’s a must-listen!

Sharing some thoughts in December 2024 on the first single release “Sauna/Cabin,” I noted… “With an undeniable spark ignited, Tom vividly relives the adventures of his mind-altering Swedish encounter, captivating listeners and leaving them wanting more“.

Continuing on, Tom elaborates…

“I went to Sweden to relax post-tour and ended up staying awake for two days almost losing my mind. It was not conducive to relaxation at all. I would like to go on record saying I would never recommend LSD or any type of drug, we were very stupid to think we had any sort of control. However, we got through it together and it spawned an album. Over the last 18 months, I’ve been reliving every second of it with Gil Lewis (producer/songwriter) and I’m so thrilled (and relieved) to share this crazy experience”.

When listening to “Cabin Fever” for the first time, it’s impossible not to notice the dramatic shift in musical direction. Coupled with the meticulous refinement of pop stylings throughout the album. Producer Gil Lewis employs an impressive array of production techniques. Thus creating innovative soundscapes that merge seamlessly with Tom’s lush, pop-rich vocals. This blend not only elevates the overall audio experience but also highlights Tom’s profound lyrical artistry with striking authenticity and emotional depth. In comparison to the vibrant disco and dance-pop aesthetics of his earlier albums, “Black Country Disco” and “Life In Plastic“. “Cabin Fever” offers a more introspective and mature perspective. Above all inviting listeners to engage with the themes of personal growth and transformation embedded in each track.

The album’s focus singles, “Drama” and “That Girl,” powerfully embody a mature musical and deeply confessional lyrical perspective. “Drama,” for example, delves into introspection and profound soul-searching. Yet Tom skillfully juxtaposes this heavy emotional weight with a self-directed music video featuring an outfit evocative of a Shakespearean bard. “The drama has defined me, who am I reminded of?” he sings, inviting us to ponder on this thought-provoking dialogue.

Another standout moment of musical diversity arises in “That Girl,” a collaboration with Gil Lewis and Stefan Storm of The Sound of Arrows. This track poignantly captures the longing for a carefree existence, as Tom reflects on the longing and isolation experienced as a gay man. He laments, “I never ever got affection from the guys, no attention from anyone, ooh I didn’t have a chance, just a fear of love and rejection. Another lonely young queer in a small town looking for a change to come (But it never did).” The accompanying visualizer is a breathtaking display of animated psychedelia. The clip is crafted by Jill Chrisp of Studio Shuggi, enhancing the song’s emotional impact and allure. But let me tell you, a display of phenomenal artistry carries all the way through this project.

Personal and intense at times. Ultimately, thought-provoking and revealing, “Cabin Fever” is stellar work. Essential listening.
